Why are people so stunned Pouliot didn't go to Toronto after Kreider/Miller/Skjei all stayed out of the Nash trade?

Sounds like Toronto accepted Kapanen instead of Pouliot and that made the deal happen.

Its amazing the amount of classy (whined his way out of Tampa Bay to a singular destination) and "didn't want to fade away / play just for a contract" (waited 26 hours into free agency) tweets are out there. Some people just love the narrative.

I loved the Kessel hotdog story, but if it was going to be proven BS I love (even more, I think) that it's undoing was the fact that Kessel was listed in the phone book.

Here's me dying in real time on a Rangers board ...

10:34 AM: Right? Put out a standing offer of a pool of prospects from them to pick from plus a 2nd and if they want to call it in, they call it in. Topping your own bid against no one is goofy.

(This was the last time things were ok or close to ok.)

11:01 AM: Oh my god, they’re saying Callahan and “significant draft picks”. Sather can’t suck this bad.

11:03 AM: “Ok boys, St. Louis said he’ll only come here so it looks like Tampa has all the leverage now. We’re going to have to seriously up our offer,” Glen Sather said, his head buried in his own ass.

11:06 AM: This is going to be Sather’s ridiculous masterpiece. Your captain and 1st round pick(s???) for a 38 year old who has said he will only go to your team. This might be worse than Nash, even when we thought it could be Kreider.

11:12 AM: This is the worst. This might be worse than what I thought the worst that could happen today was.

11:13 AM: This reminds me of when the Broncos traded their captain plus their 1st plus their 2nd for Peyton Manning who might be the best QB in NFL history OH WAIT NO THEY DIDN’T THEY JUST LET INDY LET HIM GO AND THEN SIGNED HIM BECAUSE LEVERAGE ISN’T REALLY THE TOUGHEST THING IN THE WORLD TO UNDERSTAND I AM GOING TO DIE BOYS I AM LITERALLY GOING TO DIE …

11:15 AM: Its only going to get worse when guys like Moulson and/or Vanek go for the equivalent of just that 1st and 2nd. This is just brutal bad. I might have to leave.

11:24 AM: Oh my god, its the next 1st. This right here is what happens when the GM has zero concern for long-term viability.

11:37 AM: Jesus Christ. He gave him a god damn escalator.

UPDATE ONE YEAR LATER: Sather was able to top his own bad deal with a badder deal.

Depends on what you mean by "gone". He's no longer GM, just team president, whereas before he was GM and president. Rumor has it things would be even worse now if not for the current GM (Gorton) having talked him out of deals, including tacking Kreider onto the Nash trade just to get it done in season versus after the season. Mindblowing that a star-fucker could not only exist as an NHL GM, but actually have a winning team. Long term, its gonna get rough.

So, the Stars signed Johnny Oduya from Chicago today, effectively replacing Trevor Daley, the defenseman they traded to Chicago for Patrick Sharp. Good move for Dallas, I think. Oduya is old, but it is only a two-year deal.

I have a hard time understanding why certain players earn what they earn.

Del Zotto certainly seems overpaid. Justin Schultz of the Oilers seemed like the worst defenseman in the NHL at times (although he has some offensive skill), yet he just signed for nearly $4 million per year. While, Andrew Desjardins - no star, but a solid grinder - just signed a 2-year deal with Chicago at only $800k per year.

Cause hockey GMs are idiots?

Schultz penalty for being crap is a one-year deal. If he was any good at all the Oilers would have given him 5x5 or more.

The bigger issue I see is that Del Zotto just signed for almost the exact deal Oduya got.

NHL confirms it sent out 16 expansion bid packages and got only two applications - from Las Vegas and Quebec City.
The National Hockey League today released the following update relative to the NHL expansion application process:

“As previously announced, NHL expansion applications were made available to all potentially interested applicants on July 6. Since that date, we have received requests from, and responded by sending applications to, 16 separate groups/individuals.

“The deadline for filing an application and proceeding in the NHL expansion process was last night. We can confirm that we have received two applications: one from Bill Foley for a franchise in Las Vegas, Nevada, and one from Quebecor for a franchise in Quebec City, Quebec.

Maybe asking each city to give a gift of $2MM wasn't the right tact for getting a lot of bids. Strange.

I don't know if you're already committed to spending $500M on expansion fees, $2M seems like a drop in the bucket. I think the bigger issue might have been the whole expansion process was kind of a farce. In reality, there was only 1 expansion spot and the league was doing everything but batting its lashes at Seattle for that one. It'll be interesting to see how this all shakes out given that. They could just give the franchises to QC and LV. They could just shut down expansion for now and steer the Coyotes to Las Vegas. I think one way or another Phoenix's days are numbered.

If you're taking a longshot, its very hard to justify just handing over $2MM. Even knowing $2MM is nothing for a city, it'll be seized on by whatever the other political party is as stupid (because you were a longshot) and wasteful.

NHL probably didn't want to waste their time on longshots anyways. As Brian said, they wanted Seattle and a few other candidates to not make it look so obvious.

Yeah, we're all agreeing here. I think the NHL overestimated interest in expansion and thought they'd get some bids for a second Toronto franchise if nothing else. I'm pretty sure keeping a non-refundable fee is standard practice in these kinds of situations, but the NHL really made itself look foolish by tipping its hat and not making this a truly fair process. Why would anyone else bid when the league has basically all but said the bid would go to Las Vegas, Seattle and MAYBE Quebec City. (Was smart of them to put in a bid given Seattle didn't).

SOP for sports leagues in general? Like does MLS actually make cities pay to submit or just sports leagues that are already massively popular and successful?

We could quibble on whether or not the $2M was high or not (probably was), but I would absolutely assume there's always some portion of the application fee that's non-refundable for these things. The thing is, let's say for the sake of argument that the non-refundable portion was $500K...would that have resulted in more bids? I can't imagine how.

(Maybe I'm framing this wrong. When you charge a fee...anytime, for anything...you're doing so for a specific reason. To generate revenue, sure, but sometimes also because you're trying to limit or restrict the number of people who apply for Thing X or Thing Y.

If the NHL wanted to truly gauge which cities and groups had enough real interest to put some skin in the game, then they got their answer.)

I kinda feel like the $10MM deposit is what prevents Poughkeepsie, NY from jumping in just for show. Maybe there is a decent reason, but my thinking is 15 cities submitting bids and generating some level of interest in hockey, even with most knowing its the longest of longshots, trumps 4 really serious cities plus $8MM in fees.
