Golf - "The" Open

Post by SportsDoc »

Forecast is for windy conditions all 4 days, 3 days over 20 mph. Who does that favor? I think it brings more non-US golfers into the mix. It also probably hurts Spieth, Bubba and Dustin, who tend to hit it high. May actually help Tiger, especially off the tee if he can use his "stinger" tee shot and avoid the dreaded driver. May help Sergio and Molinari? Does Watson make his last cut?

Thoughts and predictions.

I think Tiger (and everyone else) can use driver a lot because it's pretty wide open. Just have to avoid bunkers, but most of those are in the fairway anyway.

Apparently the course is a lot softer than usual, which will place an emphasis on iron play. Spieth has been the best iron player this year, so he has a real shot.

But I figure it will be a mid tier player whose putter gets hot.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.

Good news for Woods, then.

Just had a psychic flash of Phil Mickelson winning.

Also the names Fowler and Poulter popped into mind.

So bet against these three.

Longhorn Network is showing Spieth's entire round live tomorrow morning.

That's impressive (and, you can argue, desperate. but what else are they going to broadcast?)

Gonna be Stenson. Might as well start etching his name on the jug. His game is perfect for St Andrews and he's due. (Also someone who is a big hitter like Bubba can have a big advantage if he can stay out of trouble on the fairways though that's a lot of luck at St Andrews.

This is an awesome idea. We could put Justin Rose's round on BBC America, angel Cabrera on Univision, Phil on CNBC, Rickie Fowler on Nickelodeon, Tiger on the History Channel....

Paul Lawrie's been irrelevant for so long that I thought it was Brett Lawrie leading the tournament.

Jason Day is just a strange strange golfer. Always contending at Majors but kinda middle of the road otherwise. I know he won a match play and a couple of other events, but it's odd.

Eh. Toms won 13 events on tour. He was really good for a few years. Day has only won 3 PGA events so far.
