Some soulless someone who works Jindal's campaign is excited about this, right? Or does that only happen in TV/movies?

That makes a great campaign slogan and platform. He would crush it in the debate. Foreign policy? Pray. Economy? Pray. It worked for Rick Perry, when he rented out a stadium to get a large group together to pray for better weather. That did work, right?

You know what would be crazy? If we found out this lone wolf was a white, conservative gun nut. Wouldn't it be so weird if all these lone wolves fit the same profile. What are the odds?

I actually think the U.S. will one day go absolutely the other way, they will do what the US always seems to do, randomly demonize the whole subject and ban utterly anything that even so much as is gun shaped.

The insanity of all this is that the only way there would be real change is if the enabling politicians and/or major NRA execs and donors became the targets ... which would never happen since their enemies are the anti-gun pacifists.

Not a chance in hell. If 20 kindergarten kids getting gunned down in their school right before Christmas doesn't spur change, nothing will.

Fan of Fred Phelps apparently...
Houser is also known as Rusty Houser, and apparently has a presence on social media as an outspoken conservative.

The last thing someone posting as Rusty Houser posted on Facebook was in 2013, when he linked to an article called "A woman's place in the church and the weak church elder."

He wrote, "The bible doesn't ask me to like what it says, only to obey it. Death comes soon to the financially failing filth farm called the US."

He only had two things liked on Facebook, among them "I hate liberals!"

Police called Houser a drifter and said he had only been in Lafayette since early July.

A man identified as John Russell Houser on Twitter tweeted only twice. He wrote, "If you don't think the internet is censored, try reading a newspaper from a country that hates liberals the way I do," in June 2013.

A little earlier, he wrote, "The Westboro Baptist Church may be the last real church in America members not brainwashed."

We need armed guards at movie theaters! Maybe some of those swell volunteers in Chattanooga and elsewhere that the Army has said to treat as a security threat around recruiters can make a field trip.

Also, I demand flags fly at half mast. Whenever you have mass shootings it is absolutely necessary that this Obummer president respects dead people.

And where is the bleach blonde bimbo calling this what it is: Radical Christianity. Gay marriage didn't kill them. Climate change didn't kill them. A Hitler sympathizer, Tea Party, anti-government mentally disturbed person with access to firearms did.

The genie is waaay out of the bottle. Guns don't biodegrade - they are out there and they aren't going anywhere.

Hate to say this, but guy I was golfing with said that only two dead hardly qualifies as newsworthy from the states.

It does if it's 2 white women killed. There is no chance of any significant change in the gun laws of this country in the near, or distant, future.

I bet all of these theater shootings are a Netflix conspiracy to boost their subscription numbers.

It has long puzzled me as to why this targeting has not occurred. It's historically routine for there to be splits on the left between those who emphasize civil-disobedience and protests, and those who believe in meeting violence with violence. For example, the Weather Underground and Black Panthers were active at the same time as their non-violent (or less violent) counterparts.

It's been attempted, but it will never work. The NRA has way too much money and power. Look at the sales in ammo and handguns every time the NRA says Obama and jackbooted UN troops are coming for your guns, or they say Homeland Security is purchasing every bullet in America, so citizens won't be able to buy ammo anymore. There becomes such a run on ammo, that stores can't keep their shelves stocked.

Any attempt to target pro-gun rights politicians or NRA leadership is met with such a strong backlash of "why do you hate the Constitution" that it never goes anywhere, and usually does more damage to the person or group going after the pro-gun person/group. Guns aren't going anywhere in my lifetime.

Whoever it was that made the observation that after Sandy Hook came and went with no changes that it is clear nothing will ever move the needle is right (Onion, maybe?). It is hard to imagine a scenario that will move the country enough to compel a change if mowing down 1st graders didn't get it done.

This is, in a way, the new normal.

mister d perfectly summarized the prevailing wisdom - the next Republican debate isn't for a few weeks. It would have been quite something to hear the candidates react to this outrage tonight.

But there's nothing more that can be said. Either in disgust, anger or in ironic detachment.

A CNN military analyst who lives in the area had this to say:
"This is so out of character for this whole area," he said.
Don;t think that can plausibly be said about anywhere where guns are so readily available.

Stay tuned - being reported that the killer asked students' religion before he started shooting. There's the issue that th egun nuits will seize upon.

Sure, whatever.

Coworker from Roseburg told me there was even another shooting a few years back (which I seem to vaguely remember), but can't sift through the current google hits to find it.

So that would be at least 3 in the last 17 years.

The Sheriff handling this situation fought tooth and nail against any new gun control legislation in the wake of Sandy Hook.

Sheriff: 'I will NOT violate my constitutional oath'
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin has sent a letter to Vice President Biden declaring that his deputies will not enforce any regulations they deem unconstitutional.

The letter was posted to the Sheriff's office Facebook page and their Web site, just about an hour after the president announced his plan for tighter gun laws.

Hanlin becomes the third Oregon sheriff to write a similar letter to the vice president regarding gun control legislation.

Sheriff Tim Mueller wrote a letter on Monday that quickly went viral when it was shared on Facebook.

Sheriff Hanlin writes that he agrees with Mueller, and will not direct his deputies to enforce any "unconstitutional directives."

Hanlin wrote, "The United States Supreme Court has ruled that when a sheriff chooses to enforce an unconstitutional directive, he is violating his Constitutional Oath."

I work for a police department in a wealthy suburban community in Michigan. I just got a call from a man worried about how well prepared we are for a school shooting because his children are Christians and he's afraid they'll be targeted. No one is concerned about the dozens of pistol purchases we register every week though.

The double standard in this country in the efforts we take to prevent terrorism and gun violence is really remarkable. The shooter apparently was an open admirer of Nazis and the IRA, and (once again) seemed to have obvious untreated mental health issues, but was able to access guns easily. Yet we arrest a 14-year old Muslim boy for bringing a homemade clock to school, and later try to justify it on the grounds that he was an obvious troublemaker who talked in class a lot and blew soap bubbles in the bathroom.
