Way back in ancient times, backup QB Clint Longley sucker punched Roger Staubach. When asked why, he said cuz he wanted to be traded. Mission accomplished; he was sent to San Diego for a first and a second. Chargers wanted for some inexplicable reason to have him compete with Dan Fouts for the job.
That first rounder became Tony Dorsett. That could've cost the Raiders a trip to the super bowl or two.

Apologies for the pedantery, but, being old, I actually remember the big Seattle/Dallas trade that allowed them to pick Dorsett.howard wrote:Way back in ancient times, backup QB Clint Longley sucker punched Roger Staubach. sorry, I believed what I heard on tv (Mr. Tony and Brother Mike) and my failing memory, I did not look it up before posting.
eta: a weak-assed defense, perhaps they used one or both of the picks from the Chargers to trade up for the seahags's spot.

So the Pillsbury Throwboy lobbied ffor the Jets job after the Geno shit went down. And yesterday he had a reddit AMA. pretty good stuff. This is my favorite:
"You have a Super Bowl ring and Dan Marino does not, does it offend you that some view Marino as having a better NFL career?
Which was the better comeback, the Bluegrass Miracle or your return to the Northern Kentucky River Monsters?
Who is the better pro football commissioner, you with the UIFL or Roger Goodell with the NFL?
Do you think any current players can follow in your footsteps and be both GM and QB for a franchise at the same time?
You had more All-SEC selections than Aaron Rodgers, why has he had a more successful NFL career so far?
You eclipsed Tim Couch’s school records for total offense, passing yards, and passing touchdowns in your time at Kentucky. Why do you think he was the number one overall pick and you were undrafted despite your more fruitful collegiate career?
You caught two passes in your Kentucky career, how did they end up going for -11 and -13 yards?
Do you prefer The Pillsbury Throwboy or Hefty Lefty?
1) Dan was way better 2)River Monsters 3)Obviously me 4)No 5)Because he played in the PAC 12 6)Just cause 7)they were batted back to me and I caught them. 8)Either

I BELIEVE IT WAS STRICTLY A FOOTBALL DECISION YOU'D HAVE TO BE TOTALLY BIASED TO THINK OTHERWISE!!!!!!!
Re: NFL 2015 Pre-season/Training Camp Thread
So Washington loses its starting Tight End for the season (Niles Paul) and the backup QB goes 12 of 14 passes for 17 of the 20 points they scored (112.5 QB rating). RGIII-- 4 for 8 (and a solid TD drop by Pierre included in that) 62.5 rating. RGIII is the starter, but with Cousins on the last year of his deal. Sort of surprised the skins are now shopping him to Jets after Smith goes out.
Re: NFL 2015 Pre-season/Training Camp Thread
Ameer Abdullah is imitating Barry Sanders.
Just typing that gives me the shivers. If mid-1990s Barry Sanders had this year's Lions OL he would have run for 2,500 yards.

Of course this means absolutely nothing from a real football perspective. But kind of fun to note that the AFC West and NFC Central have a combined exhibition record of 9-0, while the NFC West and the AFC East are 0-8 right now.

What do you think Ameer will go for on the ground?
Re: NFL 2015 Pre-season/Training Camp Thread
People will tell you the preseason means nothing and they're right and they're wrong. The ultimate results of the games (final score) of course mean nothing but the play of the players in the games mean a great deal. Of course the first and the fourth games are the most meaningless and it isn't really even close.

Re: NFL 2015 Pre-season/Training Camp Thread
Should I take that to be "yes" and "12,500 -- half of what Barry would have run for?"
Re: NFL 2015 Pre-season/Training Camp Thread
Didn't they just give Bell $$?
Is Ameer just going to be a change of pace/3rd down back that you as fans want to see get more run, but the team will sadly keep on the pine?

Re: NFL 2015 Pre-season/Training Camp Thread
Probably the other way around. Bell didn't get paid that much (I think about $3M a year). When it's all said and done I think Abdullah gets 70 percent of the touches even when Bell comes back from his injuries.Rush2112 wrote:Didn't they just give Bell $$?

And if that's the case and Bell does well with his third, you can probably live with it on that contract.

Yeah, you really have to have at least two guys these days. Unless they get hit with injuries they should be all set and then some at RB.

Re: NFL 2015 Pre-season/Training Camp Thread
If no one is injured, I'd guess that Abdullah is under 50% of touches. If he's healthy, Bell is a proven, solid RB. Riddick will get targets on passes. Abdullah is certainly promising. He can cut and has hands. But he's had all of one nice run in a pre-season game against a bad team. The Barry Sanders hype is pretty heavy on this guy.brian wrote:Probably the other way around. He was terrible. First interception was tipped, so OK, fine. Still tried to fit it into a tight window. Second was just a throw it up for grabs.

When the Browns and Bills play, it is almost always an insult to football. Except for the game a couple of years ago when the Bills and Browns were unexpectedly decent (maybe 3-2 or so) and both starting QBs got badly hurt in the 2nd quarter.

Your sportsmanship disgusts me (the co-commissioner texted me last night around 7pm to see about texting that owner - I said no, we have the ability to submit keepers at any time, but can change them until the deadline, and if he's not paying attention to his keepers after submitting them for this very reason, that's on him). The Sybian wrote:I just sent him an e-mail.DSafetyGuy wrote:Waiting to see if the guy who kept him in our league realizes what has happened. We are very hands off about team operation stuff unless someone forgets to change their lineup for one week. After that week, we contact the owner about it. If someone is not going to be able to change their lineup (for travel or whatever), they just have to notify the commissioners and we update the lineup for them with the site's projected best lineup. And if that owner is going to play a commissioner, the other one changes the lineup to avoid any appearance of impropriety.
