I'm pretty sure Hood won the title in that league.
He posts a new picture of his league-winning team about every two weeks. He must be in every rec hockey league in the tri-state area.

Checking out my investments in my Mint account and I don't think it's calculating the share prices in one of my IRAs quite right. I'm sure I would have killed myself by now if I had actually somehow lost $600,000 in the market. (I did lose a grand in VSTM though, that shit sank like a stone, but it was a home run swing anyway.)

Good friend of mine is something of a world traveller (money, no kids, runs a film festival).
(I only mention that to answer the inevitable question of "what the hell is he doing flying from Uzbekistan to Kazakhstan?")
Here's the picture he just sent from the loading gate at the airport - yes, that is a real airline. And apparently one of the most dangerous as well.

Re: Images (now possibly NSFW)
Ordered a book about the history of "Toronto's First Immigrant Neighbourhood" (in other words, a slum) based on an article about the book I read recently.
Almost shit in my pants, there spread over two pages is a picture that I have hanging in my dining room. This is my Grandfather (sprawled on the chair), Great Uncles, Great Aunt and Great Grandmother. They were poor as hell - her husband left her after my Zaida was born.
The picture was taken for a series on the poorest children in Toronto.
Just had to share. Sorry about the size.

Re: Images (now possibly NSFW)
From my understanding, it was a slow rise.
There was a whole series of photographs taken of the poorest of the poor in the city. The spurred some action - school lunches, nurses visiting the neighbourhood - but more aid came from the Jewish charitable groups in the city. Some money here, some from relatives in Europe, the boys all worked at a young age...
She never remarried, so there wasn't a man to take care of them.
The part of the slum they lived in (and I have a picture of the outside of the home that is Dickensian) was torn down and they moved into a nicer rooming house downtown.
My Great Aunt died as a young teenager, but the three boys all finished high school and my Grandfather got a degree in book keeping. And from there it's an immigrant family's success story. Jobs, eventually opening a store (one of the Great Uncles), marrying someone with enough money to buy a house, other family members sharing resources...
The two older boys passed away in their early 60s, my grandfather made it to his mid-70s.
What is amazing to me (and this is true of so many immigrant families) is that the grand children of those boys include an Oncologist, Lawyers, Accountants, Teachers, business owners...
Eventually my Grandfather married a woman from England who he had never met in person. They were pen pals.
They were also cousins. My mother brushed it off saying they were distant, distant cousins. Closer to second cousins once removed.
But that's another story...

Re: Images (now possibly NSFW)
Wow, that had to be a powerful moment seeing that picture. It sounds like the Jewish immigrant experience in Toronto was very similar to those on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I visited the Tenement Museum in New York, and it was a bit chilling knowing my grandparents lived in a shithole like that when they came here, by themselves, at 16 and 13 years old. It's great to step back now and think about what they went through so their descendants didn't have to live in a shtetl on the Russian and Polish border, which changed hands periodically. My wife published a short story about her great grandparents immigration experience, with a very young child. They lived in the hallway of a tenement one of their brothers long since moved out of.

Yeah, I opened the book and flipped through and let out a yelp when I saw it. Like I said, I have a print of that shot on my wall, so I knew it immediately. The Sybian wrote:Wow, that had to be a powerful moment seeing that picture. I went to that museum as well and it is an amazing, scary experience. Being in an actual building where immigrants lived back then is a humbling experience... one that opens your eyes and makes you count your blessings. When you think about it, it would have been the easiest thing in the world for people in that situation - even those who survived the typhus, tuberculosis and other illnesses - to just give up hope. The fact that so many worked so hard to get ahead is truly amazing.
And it makes me feel like a lazy bum sometimes.
As for my Grandparents' courtship...
Not for me to make them! Are degen jokes too easy at this point?

Me too. It is one thing to read about Jane Addams and see the photographs of NYC tenements, another thing to stand in one and walk through it. So incredibly tiny, for so many people to live, cook, and work (piecework or running a business from a corner of the room). The Sybian wrote:I visited the Tenement Museum in New York, and it was a bit chilling…
