Red Wings' 19-year-old Dylan Larkin had an assist for his first career point in the first period and just roofed one for his first goal 20 seconds into the second.

Jonathon Quick seems to be sleepwalking. He gave up five goals to the Sharks on Thursday, and tonight through two periods he's given up four goals to the Coyotes on just twelve shots.

Boston rumored to be doing a very, very smart thing by shoping Chara. Just wonder if its too late.

I wonder if Boston needs a complete rebuild. Their defense looked horrible the other day, and trading Chara would make it that much weaker. Poor Rask.

And you wonder if Rask would be a huge part of a selloff. Why rebuild around him when you could cash him in too, probably huge, and then build around the much cheaper Subban?

Like what if you could trade Rask for a package that includes a young, two way, puck-moving RH defenseman. Those guys are almost impossible to find. Wink.

Even though they're 3-0, the Lightning have come out slow in all three games. Bet against them vs. Det on the 1st period line, and buy me a beer later.

Dean Lombardi, in his own words:

On: Being a shithead ...
Without a doubt, the realization of what happened to Mike Richards is the most traumatic episode of my career. At times, I think that I will never recover from it. It is difficult to trust anyone right now-and you begin to question whether you can trust your own judgment. The only thing I can think of that would be worse would be suspecting your wife of cheating on you for five years and then finding out in fact it was true.
On: Being very stupid ...
Anyone close enough to me knows how much I loved Mike Richards. I believed that when I had acquired him, I had found my own Derek Jeter.
On: Being full of shit (in addition to being a shithead) ...
I tried everything with Mike — meeting with him constantly, sending him to concussion specialists, traveling in the off-season to visit with him at his summer home — and everything failed. I heard the rumors that Mike might have some off-ice issues, but I refused to believe that they were true despite some obvious signs. The reality is that I was 'played.' My only regret, though, is that I wish Mike had been able to come to me with his problem — and that was the last message I left for him on his cellphone when I learned of the incident and all the history leading up to the incident.
On: [Jesus Christ, does this guy remember letting Voynov practice with the team and then claiming he was totally about to void that fucker's deal when he fled to Russia???] ...
I believe that what happened to Mike Richards is a tragedy and I cannot let it go. My short-term goal is to win championships; my long-term goal is to eventually become more involved with groups studying the changing values that are becoming increasingly evident in sport and their root causes.
On: [Dean Lombardi should be fired] ...
I certainly believe that Mike Richards must be held accountable for his actions — but when a player who at one time symbolized everything that was special about the sport can become caught in such a destructive spiral, then I believe the institution of sport must begin to examine its level of culpability.

We already got rid of that loafer, Ryan Malone, (or set him up to get arrested with blow).

Matt Carle really sucks these days. He doesn't look the part, except when he's on the ice (snow).

The Penguins are 0-3, and there's some talk that Coach Mike Johnston might be in danger of losing his job. That escalated quickly.

Media and fans are really down on Crosby and Malkin now. I haven't seen a minute of the Pens' season yet, so I can't judge for myself. I'll watch tomorrow night. For an October game, it feels huge.

bapo! (in the NHL predictions thread) wrote:My biggest concern with Pittsburgh, and this has been a roll-over concern for several seasons now, is that they don't have any cheap secondary scoring. They've been in win-now mode for years, which makes sense when you have Crosby and Malkin. But they've traded away so many draft picks for complementary players who haven't added much value. So, they have very little depth in the system, and the draftees who should be filling out the bottom-six just don't exist. (I'm still waiting on Beau Bennett.)
While I didn't see the entire game, I saw his goal against Montreal and by all accounts I've read he had a great game.

What's Red, Black, White and looks like dogshit right now?

The Chicago Blackhawks.

Take nothing away from Philly's backup guy last night. They may have found themselves a diamond in the rough there, but damn if Chicago isn't having a tough time getting those new lines to gel up. That was tough to watch last night, but to be critical, they don't seem to like to make adjustments against teams like that. They want to keep playing that below the net cycle stuff and Philly just got aggressive enough to break the flow of that up. When it doesn't work for 40+ minutes, it's time to start changing the offensive mindset, carrying the puck in, firing from the point and driving the middle.

Considering the Tigers started something amazing like 12-3 not going to get too worked up about the Red Wings being 3-0. Way too early to get excited or panic. The good teams will figure it out. The not-so-good teams will become not-so-good. Seems like there's about four or five teams every year who are supposed to suck and start hot or supposed to be great and suck it up for a week and the national media gets into an uproar and this year is no different.

It brightened my day.

Games played since Hextall's last game ...

John Vanbiesbrouck (55)
Brian Boucher (174)
Maxime Ouellet (2)
Roman Cechmanek (163)
Neil Little (2)
Robert Esche (128)
Sean Burke (15)
Antero Niittymaki (161)
Jeff Hackett (27)
Michael Leighton (33)
Martin Houle (1)
Martin Biron (133)
Ray Emery (88)
Jeremy Duchesne (1)
Johan Backlund (1)
Sergei Bobrovsky (83)
Ilya Bryzgalov (99)
Steve Mason (121)
Cal Heeter (1)
Rob Zepp (10)
Michal Neuvirth (3)

I was at Hextall's last game and sitting behind him, about 20 rows up, for this ...
How bad was Ron Hextall? Ask Chris Tamer.

Tamer, a Ranger defenseman acquired from Pittsburgh back in November, scored his first goal in 156 games, a span dating back to Feb. 16, 1997 when he scored against -- Ron Hextall!

Tamer's first goal as a Broadway Blueshirt will make every highlight film this week, and every blooper tape into the next millennium. He almost got credit for an off-ice goal.

Tamer took a pass from Manny Malhotra at the red line at center ice and nonchalantly backhanded the puck down ice on a deep clearing attempt as the Rangers geared up for a line change.

Hextall stepped forward to glove the puck, but looked more like an eight-year-old outfielder as the puck bounced off his mitt and went behind, not for a big error, but for a 2-0 lead.

"Probably the worst one I ever gave up,' Hextall volunteered.
