Re: Comedy...stand-up and otherwise...
I try to let them all do their thing and if it's funny, so be it. I mean, Robin Williams and Jim Carrey are two examples that you wouldn't shoot down, in their day, for leaning heavily on schtick.
I want to emphasize in their day. A lot of that stuff doesn't age well because we've been mainlining stand up for (checks calendar math) over 20 years now. I know a lot of you guys know, but generally people forget (and young folks have no idea) that there was a time where the only time you saw a stand-up set was on something like Johnny Carson, then Letterman. There was a time before Comedy Central, and that when CC did show up, it was 99 percent random sets from the Chuckle Hut or the Improv or whatever.
Anyways, in the relatively early years of televised stand up, we'd give them a lot more leeway than we do now. But I'm not kicking Gaffigan or Jo Koy anyone else that leans on a gimmick to move their set forward.
Here's an example, most of you probably picked up on, but just in case... Ever notice that when Chappelle says something he wants to emphasize and kind of force the audience to react/laugh... He smacks the mic on his thigh. If you've never noticed it, now it's gonna fuck with you.

It is the whole schtick. The first time I saw him was on the Vince Vaughn Wild West Comedy tour. The put together look and use of the stage made him a bit fresher than most. But it has not evolved. Also from that I found John Caparulo. He was funny but I wonder how much of that was just his voice as opposed to his jokes. The Sybian wrote: ↑Tue Dec 13, 2022 9:23 amHe is the Big Bang Theory of standup comedians. That Minchin clip was fantastic and spot on.
Didn't Tom Papa just have a special come out a few months ago? I really like him, he is like a more intelligent Jim Gaffigan. And on podcasts, he just seems like a sweet, likable guy. His previous special was really good.

It’s new. I was thinking of his previous special You’re Doing Great! Wiki says it came out in 2020. I have no sense of time anymore. I’ve fallen so far behind on specials I want to see.Pruitt IV wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 9:47 pmMaybe it's the one from a few months agoThe Sybian wrote: ↑Thu Dec 22, 2022 8:02 pm That Minchin clip was fantastic and spot on.

Re: Comedy...stand-up and otherwise...
Enjoyed the new Tom Papa. About 20 minutes in, the edible kicked in and I suddenly became aware of the unusual backdrop behind him. Then the backdrop was causing some crazy hallucinations, the shapes were moving and dancing. Really cool, and not so distracting that I was able to pay attention. Last 10 minutes had me LOLing hard, but I think that was chemically assisted.

I watched 2 of his specials in a row and his overuse of "whyyyyy?" with a down-up-down inflection gets annoying but his material is still good so whatever. The Sybian wrote: ↑Thu Dec 29, 2022 8:21 am Enjoyed the new Tom Papa. Not my definition... referring to the market out there for this type of thing. If he shoots a promo piece about how the PC crowd railroaded him, his shows will be full of the aggrieved whites who would have avoided him like the plague 15 years ago.The Sybian wrote: ↑Thu Dec 29, 2022 6:04 pmIs your definition of "anti-woke" drugging women to rape them?

I am in Atlanta at my sister-in-law's. She is exec director for a non profit. One of the folks she have given a grant is a Reverend I'm Detroit whose best friend is Mike Epps. So tonight my sister-in-law and son are back stage and vip access at his show (place the Hawks play). Very interested to get my son's perspective on the night.

Yeah, I still think a number of Cosby's shows will get disrupted, but less so than the disaster of a tour he tried last time out.
The guy drugged and raped dozens of women. You really have to be pretty fucked up to buy a ticket to an 85 year old, at this point very unfunny dude to "prove a point about cancel culture."
But these fucking morons love burning their money... buying flags, donating to Trump, traveling long distances to attend rallies, buying t-shirts and hats and FLAGS and building huge signs on the side of the highway. So, so many flags.
