I bet Rubio can’t wait for the next family gathering with all his Cuban relations giving side-eye because he’s proud of detaining/kidnapping/disappearing vocal opponents of El Hombe Naranja just like some other guy from a country not too far, far away.

They’re all fucking servile scum.

Cuban Americans escaped a communist regime, they tend to be the most hard right. And racist against all other Latin Americans, so he might be a hero.

We're currently at an all-inclusive resort in Playa Del Carmen, and yesterday there was a MAGA dipshit, proudly wearing his new (with the "45-47" logo) MAGA hat in the pool.

Last night, that same MAGA dipshit tried to start some shit with Caity when she was at the bar getting drinks. I was in the bathroom and walked up to her saying "I'm not going to talk about that" and "We're all Americans".

What an asshole...

I think that's why conservatives fear anything that gives equal footing to minorities is because they assume if someone else has the chance to do what they did to them, they will.

That’s one of the reasons. Another is that if the talent pool is opened to more than mediocre straight white guys then that’s competition for them to deal with in the quest for money, power, ass, and influence that they’ll lose do to their lack of merit.

I would say post-Apartheid South Africa, while not perfect, is a counterpoint to the "we will do to you as you did to us" rationale. I'm not saying you guys are wrong, just saying it doesn't HAVE to go that way.

Doesn't anyone with any kind of money (regardless of race or Pre-apartheid status) have to live in gated communities with 24/7 guards? I know that was a premise of District 9, too, but I feel like I've read that outside of pockets, SA is terribly underdeveloped. It has admittedly been a bit since I thought about it much.

No doubt they fear this, but I don’t think there’s any way it could happen. Even when whites become a minority, we’ll be too numerous and too rich to be oppressed in any meaningful way.

But the Us-Them mindset doesn't allow for that much rationality.

Not just SA, pretty much any developing country with massive wealth disparity. (prob not long until we can remove the 'developing' qualifier)

Yes, they choose to, but it's because they can afford it. They aren't sent there to live or required to my any means. And I'm talking gated communities different from Shady Villas or Pillowy Bottoms in Bonita Springs, like paramilitary guards and thick ass walls. Let me try to find the article I read.

I think that depends on laws being enforced rather than actively cultivating a full on class war below the 1%. I wouldn't project any future path based on how things have historically gone.

Given what has happened in other countries in Africa, I find it remarkable that they don't just Kill all the Whiteys. Would anyone blame them?

My point is that Mandela came in and did his best to move the country forward without massive violent backlash. Things could've very easily gone much much worse during that transition.

Hundreds of students apparently had their visas revoked for being too mouthy.

It’s horrifying, but in alegal sense this is probably better than the feds abducting one at a time and bundling them to Louisiana, because now theres a class of individuals who can sue in DC to declare this invalid.

I have a couple friends who’ve been very supportive of Ukraine on their FB profiles, one of which has a blue/yellow proile pic. They’re both traveling in Europe now. Frankly I found that to be reckless.

We're in the midst of the MAGA blitzkrieg, right?

Everything about it is happening quickly, against any sort of norms, with no worry about opposition nor consequences. Absolutely confuse and bewilder the enemy (libs, dems, queer folk, you name it), and dismantle their power structure. And it seems to be working, regardless of how idiotic or cruel their agenda is.

I'm heartened by the folks going to town halls, Bernie/AOC rallies, but I fear if the Dems lose on Tuesday in Wisconsin, it will only embolden Musk and his ilk to pour cash into elections, essentially leaving Dems stranded for years to come.

I'll continue to attend all the rallies I can, and pester our concerned senator, but I just don't know if anything can stem the tide at this point.

Anyhow- how's your weekend? It's snowing here, because it's Maine!

Matching shirt and pants <> suit, especially in the context intended for “suit” above.

Just say “outfit” or “getup” or “clown costume”.

I am shocked Booker is this coherent right now. Also thrilled he quoted from Federalist 51 just a little while ago. Doubt any of my students are watching.
