The tariffs are so bad for so many reasons. But calling it Liberation Day is straight-up Nazi shit.

If anything, I’m glad that racist fuck Strom Thurmond doesn’t have the longest filibuster in history anymore.

Re: We Doing This Shit Again? (Trump Admin Meltdown II)
This fucking got my blood boiling. Our trade war with Canada is on par with WWII? What the actual fuck? I'm so sick of hearing about how we need to get our tariffs to match Canada's against us. They all cite some tariff of over 200% from the USMCA (sorry, no time to look up the details), but Canada has never actually charged it. The tariff only kicks in if the Canada imports some insanely high amount of a single product, and they've never come close to that number. And of course, Trump constantly attacking "the moron who negotiated the deal" with Canada, which of course, was him. And he touted it as the greatest deal ever made, and mostly because it sounds like YMCA. "USMCA...MCA, it has such a nice sound to it. MCA..."

Hear you but people (liberals) want to be freed from the tyranny of Walmart all the time. Walmart is global consumer free trade in a big box

This is all so weird. We knew this was coming - and the market was up every day this week. Even Tesla went up today after their embarrassing sales report. Then the futures drop right after the announcement.

The thing about the tariffs is they are just banking on enough people believing their "math" which I use in the loosest sense. Jerloma could have backed into that formula.
The worst part is that they'll probably be right and people will just accept it as fact, even when everything they buy costs more for some weird reason.

This is the part that concerns me ... like 35% are Trump loyalists who, if blueberry prices skyrocket in June, will accept it when Fox News tells them that they actually hate blueberries without any further consideration. That's not enough to avoid getting steamrolled in midterms by the "groceries are too expensive under Biden" voters that did all this which means they don't care. If public perception is a complete non-factor, we're fucked-fucked rather than just fucked.A_B wrote: Thu Apr 03, 2025 9:36 amThe thing about the tariffs is they are just banking on enough people believing their "math" which I use in the loosest sense. Signal story was gaining too much momentum so he finally went through with the tariffs. Now that this story of him destroying the economy is picking up steam, what's next? War with Iran? Martial Law because of this weekend's protesters? (actually MSM ignored it so he probably can't twist it around like he did with BLM)? Firing Elon after he publicly said he's against the tariffs and wants open borders(with white countries)? I think it was the first time he said he disagreed with Trump in quite some time, so maybe it's intentional but probably wishful thinking on my part. I just have to hit myself in the head with a brick a few more times to think like him and make a proper prediction.

If you only watch Fox News, the big story of the day is Trump winning a golf tournament at his own resort this weekend, so maybe that will dominate the news cycle this week.EdRomero wrote: Sun Apr 06, 2025 12:45 pm Signal story was gaining too much momentum so he finally went through with the tariffs. This is where we need the messaging to, all at once, (1) take on the serious shit like the racist deportations, (2) highlight the volume of the protests and (3) mock the ever-living shit out of him for claiming to win a golf tournament. "He's a joke, but one who is doing awful things and watch how we're uniting against him" should not be too much for the Dem machinery to blast across all media 24/7, if that's what they want to do.

I think the car stuff is separate - but that was also pushed back until now too.

Re: We Doing This Shit Again? (Trump Admin Meltdown II)
Trump apologists say the tariffs will incentivize manufacturers to build plants in the US. Ignoring the facts that Trump reverses/reiposes tariffs regularly, and a new administration in 2029 could reverse them anyway, so there isn’t a dependable motivation.
Not to mention the wage rate gap that still exists between the US and developing nations, and the lack of a trained labor pool for those jobs.
So all the tariffs are is a tax to facilitate a redistribution of wealth via income tax cuts.

Yeah, the talk about rebuilding our manufacturing infrastructure is complete bullshit. If any of this was built on actual policy, there would be a massive investment in actually accomplishing that goal. There's zero activity on that front, obviously.

Re: We Doing This Shit Again? (Trump Admin Meltdown II)
Had a team dinner at my daughter's soccer tourney a few weeks ago. I was at a table with an Econ professor at my son's school (he passed two AP Econ tests, so won't need to take this guy's class)and someone asked him if tariffs are good. He hemmed a bit and said economists don't like tariffs because it promotes inefficiency in the system, but that tariffs can be good as they promote purchasing domestic products. He seemed to be sheepishly supporting Trump. I asked that same question, in order for tariffs to work, don't we need the ability to manufacture products domestically? If we don't have domestic products to turn to, how can this work? Then I asked if there is any way we could ramp up production in less than 10 years and he said probably not. WTF? Maybe he was afraid of offending anyone in case there were Trump supporters at the table, but he later mentioned like Jordan Peterson's podcast. I don't know much about Peterson, I've tried to listen but can't handle his voice, but I know he gets labeled as a right wing nutjob.Nonlinear FC wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 10:17 am Yeah, the talk about rebuilding our manufacturing infrastructure is complete bullshit. Re: We Doing This Shit Again? (Trump Admin Meltdown II)
It amazes me how many Americans think their president is so powerful that he can apply a tax onto Canadian jurisdiction. Canada isn't charging this to them, it's their own government charging it to the importer.
Last month, Nicholas Gilbert received a delivery of grain for the 1,400 cows he tends at his dairy farm in Potsdam, New York, 20 miles from the Ontario border. The feed came with a surprise tariff of $2,200 tacked on. “We have small margins,” he told me. “I had a contracted price on that grain delivered to my barn. It was supposed to be so much per ton. And they added that tariff right on top because it comes from a Canadian feed mill.”
Gilbert cannot increase the price of the milk he sells, which is set by the local co-op. He cannot feed his cows less food. He cannot buy feed from another supplier; there aren’t any nearby, and getting it from farther away would be more expensive. When he got the delivery, he stared at the tariff for a while. Shouldn’t his Canadian supplier have been responsible for paying it? “I’m not even sure it’s legal! We contracted for the price on delivery! If your price of fuel goes up or your truck breaks down, that’s not my problem! That’s what the contract’s for.”
This was mentioned so many times when tariffs came up, but they just stuck their heads in the sand.
