It's because almost all of his songs are literal narratives. If Billy Joel is going to sing a line about a kid jacking off, he's going to spell it out.

Nah, it's because the music itself is third-rate Springsteen, or soul stylings that make Hall and Oates sound like Otis Redding.

Put me in the Joel Haters club. I actually like "Piano Man" and "Captain Jack" (haven't heard that one in decades), but all the 80's pop stuff when I was first discovering music as a kid? Hated it. And it just got worse with "Uptown Girl" and hit its nadir (I hope) with "We Didn't Start the Fire," one of the worst songs ever written.

But that article still sucked.

Saw the new Afghan Whigs video with Har Mar Superstar lip syncing and I have to wonder. Why? You have Greg Dulli who is basically an unironic version of Har Mar Superstar

New Jason Isbell single was released in advance of June album. It'll be interesting to see how musicians and other artists react to Trumpism and this song is the first wave of that.

From Isbell's interview with EW: “I try to document where I am in my life and right now, one of my primary concerns is, ‘What is my role as a white male in a society that really is in dire need of understanding and empathy for people who aren’t white males?'”

No secret that I've recently discovered and enjoyed Isbell's music, but is the 400 unit just his backing band or is his solo stuff and that with the band two distinctly different acts?

It's weird and causes confusion but 400 Unit has been his backing band live and on album for every "solo" album he's released. From what I understand he labels studio albums he feels were written with the help of the band as Jason Isbell & 400 Unit. Regardless of what it says on the album cover it's been the same band for some 15-ish years now.

Surprisingly interesting long read asking a simple question -- what happened to Bob Seger's back catalog? And why aren't his albums online?

Looks like Beautiful Loser has a value range of $5-$60 on discogs.com, which is about standard fare for a generic-ish (sorry AB) classic rock album (price range includes less-valuable represses as well as the obviously more valuable original issues) so it doesn't really look like the market for his stuff is affected. (At least for that album. Like anything collectible I'm sure there's rare, sought-after pressings that niche nerds would shell out for.)

His insistence to turn the page on his own catalog suggests he'll just wind up a (beautiful) loser. Because even now, even though it's no longer still the same, at least down on main street, rock and roll never forgets.

He's one of those artists where his biggest "hits" aren't really his best songs. Maybe like Billy Joel in that way.

This maybe should go in confessions thread, but another band I felt that way for a long time was Rolling Stones.
