I was going to tell you to get drunk at lunch cause if you're not picked by lunch not likely to hear openings... But u did the right thing. Actually if you're zoom might just be selection. I assume you go in for trial.

Case settled, service is complete. All we know is it was a civil case. Never even heard from the judge directly.

Re: My Wish to Sail Through Life Without Serving on a Jury
She had a good season, but her team is frustrating at times. They have a tendency to let worse teams hang around. They can completely dominate a team and sit on a 1-0 lead for 75 minutes, then give up a crappy goal and end up tied. Played great against a few teams more talented than them and eeked out a few ties and one goal losses. Just wish they could play with the same intensity against weaker teams. Spring season league winner and runner up get to go to Regionals with a chance at National finals, so they have some time to tighten things up. My other issue is that they have 19 rostered and the coach is too nice to follow through with his threats of reduced playing time for kids who miss practices and don't earn the time. Frustrating seeing the 2 or 3 kids who aren't devoted to the team getting as many minutes as they do. We get a few weeks off, then play in a bunch of indoor tournaments and a futsal tournament which should be interesting, especially since my daughter and most of the girls have never played.
And fuck that guy from Misterd's story, and for once I don't mean Misterd.

Ran into a friend who was called in the same jury pool as Rass, but different case. She was in the juror #3 seat in voir dire, and the judge wasn't buying any of her excuses, and she had a lot of good reasons she can't be an objective juror.

And I'm out! They picked 35 out of about the remaining 55 after the initial excuses. I didn't get called, and he cancelled the rest of our service for the month. It was a murder/abuse/arson trial that was expected to run 4 days next week.

Jury duty starts on Tuesday. Just got the case assignment, it's a 4 week long criminal trial on charges of sexually assaulting and endangering a minor. I can't think of a worse type of case to listen to. I can't imagine scheduling 4 weeks, and there is a really fucking long witness list. Really hope the Defendant pleads guilty.

Ugh, that sounds terrible. I would kinda like to serve on a jury at some point, but not for a 4-week trial and definitely not for that. The Sybian wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 3:20 pm Jury duty starts on Tuesday. Re: My Wish to Sail Through Life Without Serving on a Jury
4 weeks is crazy. You know, you could potentially say some stuff about your old job looking at german porn and that it really affected you and put you in a bad mental state and would like to be excused. If being a lawyer doesn't get you off (ha!), that is. But seriously, there were 4-5 lawyers in my jury pool and when they asked during voir dire all but one were excused very soon and that one did corporate law. They excused two estate lawyers (woman was accused of beating husband and neglect) and also trial lawyers. The Sybian wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 3:40 pmThat's exactly my thought. Re: My Wish to Sail Through Life Without Serving on a Jury
I didn't even think of that! I worked for law enforcement prosecuting the importation of illegal porn, of course I'm biased!!! I was just thinking of bringing up my father's career as a parole officer and his activism in getting Megan's Law (sex offender registry) passed in New York and the numerous times he was sued for violating parolees' rights by not letting sex offenders leave prison and move into households with children. Not sure how far I'll get being biased against child abusers, as most people are.A_B wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 3:44 pm4 weeks is crazy. Did you find out the case assignment beforehand just because it's such an extreme ask of commitment, or did I just miss a notification when I went through this last month? Pretty sure we didn't know jack.

No idea. They sent the Zoom link with an attached letter. Clearly a form letter, first two pages were the life story of the clerk and explaining how it's such a great honor to serve on a jury and an excerpt from a letter a recent juror sent a Judge in their court saying how it was such a wonderful opportunity... Then a description of the case, a list of questions about our ability to serve in general and specific to this case and a potential witness list.

Maybe I missed it. The couple of times I've had to go in person we weren't pre-assigned to a case, but started off in a big group that was slowly split up and sent to courtrooms, so I just assumed the same for Zoom.

Re: My Wish to Sail Through Life Without Serving on a Jury
In the past (Union County and in Boston) I was assigned to a jury pool, where it was a huge group for several trials. Union County I just had to call a number the night before, and my group didn't have to go in. After 2 or 3 nights calling in, I was excused and off the hook for 3 years. Boston (I don't remember which court) I sat there for a few hours, they called around 100 people at a time. After 3 or 4 hours they said they filled their juries and we were done.

Wow, roll call is an amazing shit show. Trying so hard not to laugh. They are calling off all the names on the list that don't match the names on the Zoom screen. Despite asking all jurors to mute 30 times, you periodically have an elderly person take themselves off mute to start shouting their name and that they are present. And when one does it, 5 more chime in. Every damn time. I also enjoy the people who yell at the jury managers because they don't have the correct spelling or correct name on their Zoom sign in.

Ha, Kenneth Powers can't figure out how to turn on his video. And one of the old guys who keeps unmuting himself and making noise putting himself on the main screen keeps sipping out of the FoxNews mug he holds directly in front of his camera.

And lots of elderly. Although I'm only seeing those who take themselves off mute, can't change their name or start shouting out of turn, which is 90% elderly people. Just had a woman shouting over the jury manager saying "please stop speaking," as her husband is passing a kidney stone and she is driving him to the hospital. No forgiveness, he is on the next jury duty assignment. Nice try, buddy.rass wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 9:25 amMy initial Zoom was just over 100 participants and was excruciating. Yeah, my parents are in their 80s and asked me about streaming. Thankfully their internet signal isn’t strong enough so I had a quick way to end that conversation. My father still can barely handle the basic aspects of directv, so no need to pursue things further beyond him.
Their homeowners assn had a zoom meeting, and it was a shitshow like the one described above.

Ha! Years ago I tried to teach my F-i-L about the HD Channels. "Why would I watch 504 when I've always watched 4?" I flipped between the channels to show the difference between SD and HD, but his dismissive handwave was the response. My wife never figured that out either, but when we upgraded the cable box it automatically switched to HD if you entered an SD channel. I asked her a few times to stop recording shows on SD channels, but she claimed she can't tell the difference and I was just being a prick.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 9:56 amI have relatives that still can't figure out The Cable TV channels, specifically that they are paying for HD and they invariably are watching SD.The Sybian wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 9:08 am Wow, roll call is an amazing shit show. Anyways, dismissed for the day. Our case not going forward, Judge not ready for us on the backup case. Hoping they don't need us, but we are on call for tomorrow. The Boomers Zooming stopped being funny hours ago, but when they dismissed us and two woman were screaming to be heard and drowned out by dozens of people saying thank you, I was disappointed when they ended the call.

I'm lucky, I guess. I actually wouldn't mind serving on a jury. But, anyways, MoCo is a one and done deal... You call into a number and they tell you what the cut off is... I was 180 and the cutoff was something like 100, so... Done for the next (I have no idea) years.

Re: My Wish to Sail Through Life Without Serving on a Jury
I've always wanted to sit on a jury, especially when I was practicing. I just don't want to spend 4 weeks on a case about sexually abusing children. Although I was curious, as the alleged incidents occurred between 2013-2014, so I was curious why it took so long to get to trial and also curious why the witness list included 15-20 officers from numerous towns, County Sheriff, and State Troopers. I'm also not looking forward to sitting in a decrepit courthouse in a not so great part of town and it'd be a major hassle what with just starting a new job and being primarily responsible for driving the kids to school and home from practices. Jury duty is for the old, retired folks with nothing better going on.Nonlinear FC wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 1:31 pm I'm lucky, I guess. I actually wouldn't mind serving on a jury. On our old box, you could click info and see other times and channels a show was on. FiOS was really good about SD channels 2-99 being on 502-599 and 101-199 being on 601-699, so not difficult for the most part. Newer box even gives me a warning when a game is aired in 4K on another channel.Steve of phpBB wrote: ↑Tue Jan 31, 2023 12:53 pmShit, I need this.
