Meanwhile, apparently the Muslim fencer who wears a hijab finished a close second to Phelps in the flag-bearer vote and he's getting a little pressure to hand it over to her. Tough spot.

Since the Olympics are cynically exploited for global political purposes, that is an opportunity to exploit for a tremendously positive purpose/message. And as a plus, it would almost certainly stimulate another stupid tweet from Trump. That would be a good pr move for all concerned.

He should give it to her. He would become a great American and the American flag bearer is never a famous athlete anyways so I'm surprised he got it in the first place.

Better yet, he should come out carrying the flag and then hand it to her when the TV coverage is showing them. That way they both get the honor of carrying the flag and it makes a stronger statement.

Of course, Phelps is a tremendous douche so I doubt anything like that happens.

Alternate universe: Lets have her narrowly win the vote but also have the DUI on her record. I bet the right takes would be super.

Is he? I read some profile on him recently and he came off as more of a completely worn out (now re-energized) athlete with a bit of a drinking problem than an actual, core-deep douche.

that might upstage the Olympics too much.

Just going by people who've met him in Vegas. Self-important douche. But probably self-aware enough to not come off as one in an interview.

This is a tough one ... I try to think about what I'd be like as a dominant athlete in my teens. Well adjusted probably isn't high on the list.

Yeah, it's understandable. And to give him some credit, it sounds like since he knocked up his girlfriend and had a kid, he's maybe a little more centered. But for that I'm going off the same media stuff you've probably read. I don't think he's been to Vegas since his DUI days so maybe he's really turned a corner. People do grow up.

Right, he does seem like a doofus in general, like if he was Mike Phelps the Sigma Nu econ major you'd just leave the room when he came in. But that's 75% of the 20-something male population anyway. At least he's not Ryan Lochte.

Phelps should carry the flag as he's the greatest athlete in Olympics history. (Canada's flag bearer is our only gold medallist from London... a trampolinist.

I have zero issues with Phelps carrying the flag. I wouldn't care if he handed it over to someone, either, but I think he's earned the honor and shouldn't be lambasted for not handing it over.

Me neither. Like degen says, he is the greatest American olympian competing in this olympiad (well, maybe Carmelo) and is hugely deserving. Just saying it would do a bunch of good if she carried it instead.

Technology is pretty darn cool at times.

NBC showing the opening ceremonies on tape delay pisses me off. (I was deeply scarred by having to watch the 1977 NBA finals on delay.) Just on principle, I set up a VPN and I'm watching on the CBC. It tool less than ten minutes to find a free VPN app for mac, install it and fire it up. Ten minutes.

Here's what we're missing watching the olympics tonight.

I've been stressing out that people on Twitter will find a way to watch the TV coverage in real time and I'll be an hour behind, but so far there is no evidence of that. There are some benefits to watching the opening ceremony (as opposed to actual sports) on tape delay. If there is a terrorist attack or something else bad happens, I'll know in advance so I don't have to watch.
