I think Anaheim and Minnesota, as the deals are currently stated, have gotten off better making deals than they would have otherwise.

ETA: Islanders too
I agree. Why would Vegas make that deal and not just take Dumba for example.
Because Dumba is due for a big ass raise. probably commands 6-7mm AAV on his next deal.

Also according to Capfriendly, should MN choose to pay Dumba somewhere int he neighborhood of that, they've got nearly 30MM tied up in 5 Dmen

These are the rumors I've heard so far.

Tampa arranges for Vegas to select Garrison
Vegas/Florida deal may involve both Marchessault and Smith ending up in Vegas
Pens send draft pick to ensure Knights pick MAF
Wild trade Tuch, + cond pick for Vegas to select Haula
Vegas claims Stoner from Ducks. Does not pick Manson/Vatanen and gets Theodore

Does it make sense for the Hawks to do that? He still has value. Do the Hawks get a break from the cap if he sits out the year?

Or are you saying that Hossa is going this now that he's on the "cheap" part of the contract?
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Islanders is supposedly their first to move off a good list and take either the contract of Kulemin or Grabovski.

All of the above. He's not retiring, he's too "injured" to play, so his cap hit gets wiped over to LTIR.

I guess I was under the impression that his cap hit was pretty low - because of the shenanigans with the 99-year contract. So wouldn't the Hawks be better off with him playing and taking the hit?

Schlemko is a surprise to me. He was a good player for the Sharks, but only a #5/6 defenseman and not a kid anymore. Thought they would take his D-partner Brenden Dillon over him (but it's possible the Sharks made a deal with Vegas to protect Dillon).

I'm surprised Florida let Vegas have both Marchessault and Smith. Two good young offensive players. And McNabb and Sbisa are big and tough defensemen - much like Dillon of the Sharks, which might explain why they went after Schlemko instead, who is more of a skater.

This team is going to be pretty bad, like 55 points bad but that's pretty smart given their stockpile of draft picks. It's basically a one-year tank try to get the #1 overall pick in 2018 and go from there. Couple or three picks break the right way and once the honeymoon is wearing off in 2019 could start being pretty good.

yup Van Reimsdyk to Carolina for a 2nd and Schlemko to Montreal for a 5th

I bet if Vegas picked up Dillon instead, he would've fetched more than a 5th. That's not good asset management from McPhee.

Schedule is out. Vegas has two seven game home stands. Is that a function of being out west or is that unusually long?

Anaheim has two five-game home stands and three four-gamers. Kings have two fives and two fours, Sharks two fives and two sixes. Guessing travel distance out west is a factor for all these teams.

Also has to do with other uses for the arena. For instance, the Sharks always have a long road trip in February that coincides with the hosting of a tennis tournament. Need long home stands to offset long road trips.

Yeah T-Mobile will be basically unavailable for a week for PAC 12 tournament for starters. I didn't think they had much else occupying it at least for a long-ish period.

I know there's more trades coming and all that, but trading Stepan for a draft pick and a Trump supporting seeming-piece-of-garbage prospect isn't the start I was hoping for.

There may be more coming for the Rangers, D. You just cleared a fair bit of cap space. And, despite being what looks to be a very unlikeable person, DeAngelo looks like a great pickup from a hockey perspective. Young, cheap, offensively-gifted defensemen don't grow on trees. Plus an early #1.

Chicago is more of a head-scratcher for me. What does Saad bring that isn't similar (but arguably worse) than Panerin? They are both young, both have high cap hits and I think Panerin is the better player. And giving Hjalmerstrom to the Coyotes right after you lost Van Rymsdyk?

2 more years at 6 million when Panarin is due to probably make 8.5-9 on his next deal is the only way I can see it benefiting them at all. It's not bad, it's just lateral.

Also cleared the 1C space which isn't exactly easy to fill. Best case scenario is using DeAngelo and a high pick to upgrade at RHD but I'm not confident that's the plan.
