What was Ederson thinking there? Baffling...
Re: Champions League 2024-25 (it goes to 36!)
Well atleast this time when Madrid came from behind with multiple late goals I wasn't on my way to a friend's funeral.

Sorry for your loss.mister d wrote: Tue Feb 11, 2025 5:47 pm Well atleast this time when Madrid came from behind with multiple late goals I wasn't on my way to a friend's funeral.
No, the other one.
I felt aswirl with warm secretions.
Re: Champions League 2024-25 (it goes to 36!)
Pretty embarrassing moment, especially the banner with Rodri, and even more so since the goals came from mistakes.

God...Ray Hudson is insufferable. He makes Dick Vitale seem quiet and low-key.

Real Madrid is gonna win the whole thing again, aren't they?
Re: Champions League 2024-25 (it goes to 36!)
I've already shifted to "City isn't winning this year so the earlier out, the better".
Re: Champions League 2024-25 (it goes to 36!)
Welp, didn’t include Mbappe scoring in my parlay because I got burned on that in the first leg :-/

Might be going out on a limb here, but I think they've figured out how to have Mbappe and Vini Jr co-exist.P.D.X. wrote: Wed Feb 19, 2025 4:19 pm Welp, didn’t include Mbappe scoring in my parlay because I got burned on that in the first leg :-/

2 great games between two evenly matched teams. PK's are always a coin flip.
Hopefully the hangover from the loss doesn't carry over to Wembley this weekend.

That’s some front 3 Arsenal is putting out. Kieran Tierney, Mikel Merino and Sterling.

I know the positioning was bad and it was a clear chance, but did the Brugge guy really make enough contact to get a red there?

They call penalties a lottery but I feel like I can guess the penalty winner like 80% of the time

I was watching during a meeting, and I had no idea what was going on with that. I was so confused.

The German national team have only missed 1 penalty in a world cup shootout ever. Their first one in 1982.

26 out of 30 in euros

Exactly. It's part of the game.
It'd be one thing if they morphed into some random Skillz Competition and had guys trying chip the ball into a garbage can from 40 yards or something.
Suck it up and make your kick.

For the record, the double hit call was baffling. I watched multiple angles, and it's such a tiny nudge that it's not viewable at all by the naked eye. Even multiple angles and replays don't make it clear.
VAR is supposed to keep the call on the field unless there is clear and obvious video evidence. Seems like the letter of the law wasn't followed here.

That's always the fear of bringing in technology, it becomes black and white. Some people will view a tiny nudge as clear and obvious.Nonlinear FC wrote: Thu Mar 13, 2025 10:57 am For the record, the double hit call was baffling. When baseball brought in replay on home runs and then expanded it to bases, they didn't factor in calls when someone slides and comes off the base. People watched baseball for decades and only considered who got to the base first, not who got there first and held on.

Re: Champions League 2024-25 (it goes to 36!)
I don't want to get rid of replay and VAR, but I really do wish they'd clean it up and I think most of that would come down to making the coaching staffs responsible for real time challenges, not "every single goal scored we let the benches use tech to check the blue line down to the millisecond". Get however many potential challenges per game where, real time, a button is pressed within a second or whatever and, if a goal is scored, you have the option to go back and challenge. That way the obvious shit still gets fixed but you don't have to hold crowd reactions every time and take every score from exciting to tedious.

They trialed this at the recent Women's U-20 world cup. It was called FVS Football Video Supportmister d wrote: Thu Mar 13, 2025 11:31 am I don't want to get rid of replay and VAR, but I really do wish they'd clean it up and I think most of that would come down to making the coaching staffs responsible for real time challenges, not "every single goal scored we let the benches use tech to check the blue line down to the millisecond". A. It's more affordable than VAR
B. The onus falls on the two head coaches, who are allowed to make a limited number of review requests per match when they feel there has been a clear and obvious error in match-changing incidents such as goal/no goal, penalty/no penalty, direct red cards or mistaken identity.
I think not only is it affordable, it's better. What's more annoying than reversing a decision that the opponent didn't even notice.

Re: Champions League 2024-25 (it goes to 36!)
I kinda like that, but I do think there has to be a real time aspect for sports like soccer and hockey where the number of challenges can easily equal the number of goals scored. Like not for goalie interference or red cards stuff, but for ticky-tack offsides. Those should either be real time calls, by the officials or a bench challenge, or lost. Drawing lines after every goal and having assistants checking to see if a skate is mid-air is no fun for anyone, even if it ends up being correct.
Re: Champions League 2024-25 (it goes to 36!)
Leave it to the teams and it will be weaponized as a time-wasting or other interfering tactic.
Re: Champions League 2024-25 (it goes to 36!)
I don't think it could be? The rule would be you have to have a flag/button/hand raised within (blank) amount of time. If a goal is scored, it gets reviewed. If one isn't, you just lose one of your potential uses but there's no stoppage. You get a finite amount per game so you can't be frivolous. Like how MLB accepts that a play could be wrong but if you're out of challenges, so be it.
Re: Champions League 2024-25 (it goes to 36!)
Seems like the difference between that and the current usage would be do small it wouldn’t justify the additional team staff/effort. Like you’d realistically need dedicated ppl watching the game with the same feed that the VAR booth currently has. For what? 1-2 less reviews per game?
Re: Champions League 2024-25 (it goes to 36!)
I think its less the amount per game and more avoiding the ones that draw everyone's ire. Even if its one non-call per match week, that means every week the MOST ANNOYING CALL is gone. Like I'm 90th percentile pedantic and even I can't stand watching them draw lines for 5 minutes.

The thing I don't understand, and this goes for ALL sports:
Put a timer on the actual review by the refs/umps. If you can't see a reason to reverse a call within, say 90 - 120 seconds, it means the call is too close to overturn... Move the fuck on.
That's the part that truly drives me crazy.
If some nerd goes back and frame-by-frames that PK call from yesterday to "prove" they got it wrong... 99 percent of the rest of the world is going to see it for what it is and tell that nerd to fuck off.

It's the blowback. 24 hour sports channels, social media saying the call was wrong, even by fractions of inches. We live in that world.
