Re: Home Repairs
Had this issue in my first house. They did eventually find it but it was squirrels, not mice. Helped that it was a one story home with no interior insulation so it was easier to look down behind the drywall.Ryan wrote: Thu May 09, 2024 4:16 pm When the pest control guy says “most of the time mice will start to feel sick and go back to their home to die” what he really means is “they’re all gonna die in your walls and it’s gonna smell very bad and we certainly don’t take care of that part”

Just wait until the squirrel decomposes in your chimney and flies hatch and invade your home. Only after I let off several fog bombs in the house did I consider the obvious. Which worked well.

Anyone replaced a spigot?

I replaced a showerhead a few months back. But, no, not a spigot.
What's your question? I just looked at a few videos and seems fairly straight-forward.

I replaced a couple of outdoor spigots last year. I did it by calling a plumber and paying with my credit card. I don't fuck with that kind of plumbing.

Re: Home Repairs
This one isn't that tricky, really. The only issue is whether the screws that are fastening the spigot are rusted or overly tight. Some WD40 would likely get you home.
You're just replacing the part, it's not that complicated.

My parents just replaced the siding on their house. The contractor found a flying squirrel that had bit into an electrical wire and fried it's self, luckily didn't set the house on fire.HaulCitgo wrote: Fri May 10, 2024 8:59 am Just wait until the squirrel decomposes in your chimney and flies hatch and invade your home. Yes, I need to build and replace one every time I sneak in a car wash against building rules.

Re: Home Repairs
So, we just replaced our old gas water heater with an electric heat pump. We have solar on our roof, so our electric bill is next to zero (only the flat admin fees), and now, the only things we use gas for is our stove and heating, which aren't much. The heat pump puts out cold air, so on the rare really hot days we get, we'll put a fan by the open door to the garage to cool the house. Plus, we got a tax break on the cost of the heat pump.
Our solar generates more electricity than we use, so the next step will be to get an EV car to use up the free electricity.

We’d really like to switch to a heat pump for heat, but our furnace is only ten years old.

I have all my digits and a rigged up but functional garage door and $950 still in my account. Now to blow it on beer. Of which I drank just enough for courage and not enough to lose any abilities in a spring incident.
I also removed a window the kid broke with a soccer ball and replaced it with plywood. Bando say the youths.
Onward to a junkyard for the side mirror the other kid destroyed on someone's trash can.

I don’t think we have an auto repair thread, so I’ll post here. Anyone ever try to pull a dent out of their car? My son’s accident left a dent in the passenger door, maybe 14 inches across, 8 inches high. I bought a cheap dent pulling thing and going to give it a go. Mine doesn’t mention heating in the instructions, but others called for pouring boiling water over the dent or using a hair dryer. Boiling water doesn’t seem good for paint, so I’ll try the hair dryer.

I have no experience with this, but I DO have a nice dent in my bumper and about every 3 months or someone will drive up to me in a parking lot or even in my driveway at home to offer an estimate to fix the dent.
I find it humorous and slightly annoying.

Yes. Ive done that and it looks like shit. It wasnt dented anymore but looked like crips rode by with bb guns. This was not a plasticish bumper but ametalish panel. might have had more success with the bumper.

It looks so easy on YouTube videos… figure I’ll give it a shot. Dent might be a little too big, and I think at best I’ll end up with a couple spots like Citgo mentioned if I have to pull separate spots. Dent doesn’t look too bad in most light, but walking up the hill from soccer last night, it looked horrible. From 50 feet away my daughter started laughing and I knew why. I didn’t think it was worth paying to fix it, but in the wrong light, it’s embarrassingGunpowder wrote: Wed Jul 10, 2024 12:13 pmThe Sybian wrote: Wed Jul 10, 2024 11:16 am I don’t think we have an auto repair thread, so I’ll post here. That's weird. My wife jacked up the front driver's side panel something serious 18 months ago and no one has said a word about it.Nonlinear FC wrote: Wed Jul 10, 2024 11:19 am I have no experience with this, but I DO have a nice dent in my bumper and about every 3 months or someone will drive up to me in a parking lot or even in my driveway at home to offer an estimate to fix the dent.

Maybe it's a local/regional thing? I dunno, it's not like every time I go out, but it's definitely happened in the double digits.
Also, if she truly jucked up a door or side panel... Might be out of the scope of these guys. Maybe they stick to bumpers/fenders.

If you plan on keeping the car for a while it's worth fixing. I've had several dents, scrapes, etc. over the years. My wife scraped the front of the bumper on my truck two years ago...I got so sick of looking at it I finally got it fixed a couple months ago. She complained about spending the money but to me it's worth not having to look at it.The Sybian wrote: Wed Jul 10, 2024 12:26 pmIt looks so easy on YouTube videos… figure I’ll give it a shot. My son drives it, and my daughter will be getting her permit in 6 months. I'm expecting more dings and scratches. Re: Home Repairs
ours was a bit of the opposite. a while back, someone hit LA's car in a parking lot and the lack of paint on the rear bumper was noticeable. it became my car when she got a company car last fall and it didn't really bother me, but she mentioned it every time she saw it. so I went ahead and spent the money this spring to fix it (and have a scratch buffed out that I caused in the garage). it looks a whole hell of a lot better *and* I now don't have to think about having it fixed every time I see it so it was ultimately a winGoodKarma wrote: Wed Jul 10, 2024 2:20 pm If you plan on keeping the car for a while it's worth fixing. ETA: the difference in body shop estimates was crazy during the process. I figured they'd all be about the same and no way

Anyone got a per ft cost on pressure treated dog ear fence? Concrete patio demo per sq ft? I saved some cash on tree removal but may have bought a couple new projects. One needed done cause that shit was scary and I'm just glad they didn't destroy my house. One is a opportunity cause... Sun!

Tilling is not easy. Couldn't find day labor so I was it. Saved $100 but the Honda 600 does nothing to clay under concrete for 20 years. Just exhausting on Aug 1. Pedialyte saved me

Re: Home Repairs
We got a notice from the HOA (and my wife is on the board!) that a couple of shutters we have really high up on our house needed to be painted. So after the second notice, we call someone out to take a look. These shutters are maybe 2x3 feet, maybe a little bigger. They gave us an $800 estimate. Last night our neighbor asked my wife if we got the same notice we did and when she said yes, he said he'd ask his guy who does other work around his house how much he would charge to do it. $60 plus the paint. Glad we are doing this before trump takes office.

Re: Home Repairs
I dunno man. The last time we painted our exterior, which is a wood/brick mix and we just paint the wood and the shudders, it came in around $2200. That wasn't that long ago and when I use AI to answer the question, it says anywhere from $1800 to $5000 depending on the size of your house.
And as part of that digging around, it says shudders range from $70-170 depending on your zip code.
$800 for two shudders is a dude that not only doesn't want your business, he wants to fuck up his reputation. Very fucking stupid, given I just got that info in a less than 45 second search.
