Re: Comedy...stand-up and otherwise...
The documentary I Am Sam Kinison is really badly done.
A fascinating story told in a very irritating manner. Grainy footage of Sam Kinison interrupted by interviews of comedians explaining the significance of the routine, followed by 90s has beens telling us how great the joke that was just interrupted really was.
Sam Kinison was great, and his rise and fall would make for a really fascinating story. This movie blows.

Sam Kinison was hilarious the first time I saw him. But that "yelling really loud" schtick got old quickly. At least for me.Pruitt wrote: Tue Jan 16, 2018 7:03 am The documentary I Am Sam Kinison is really badly done.

Yeah, he was like Andrew Dice Clay in that way - a one note guy.
But what was frustrating about this doc is that it touched on many interesting threads that would have made a fascinating story, but skimmed over them in order to have in depth interviews with inarticulate has beens like Corey Feldman, Charlie Sheen and Ted Nugent (who sounded like he'd only seen Kinison on TV and had nothing to add).

Just watched the new one, and it's awesome. He has a very defined style, and it's very similar to listening to him have a conversation on his friends' podcasts. He just seems like such a good guy. You want to be friends with him, but in a group. One on one, he might be really boring. Anyways, I really liked his previous special, but the new one is even better.Johnnie wrote: Sat Jan 06, 2018 8:27 pmHis new one comes out on the 12th.Nonlinear FC wrote:1) I love Tom Segura, so take it with that caveat... Haven't seen the new one yet, but I enjoyed his previous one. Bill Burr was recently on the Industry Standard podcast. Burr spends a good amount of time busting balls, so it's an entertaining listen, as well as a chance to learn more about Burr.

Loved the new Segura special. Watched Christina P last night on your suggestion. It was hit and miss. Felt like she had some really strong bits and a couple of bits that she liked and were going in whether they got laughs or not. Also if you were in the other room, you'd swear about 60% of the time someone was watching a Roseanne Barr special.sancarlos wrote: Thu Jan 18, 2018 12:57 pmHaven't seen the new one yet, but I enjoyed his previous one. Yes, absolutely brilliant. Haven't seen the other one, which according to comedians, is a typical Chapelle, low key, off the cuff set, riffing about whatever is on his mind, as opposed to a tight, well worked set.Pruitt wrote: Fri Jan 05, 2018 11:22 pmJust watched one of them - the one with the story about dinner at his white friend's house - and it was really good.Johnnie wrote:The new Chappelle stand ups are great. Campaigners are petitioning Netflix to censor a comedy special featuring ‘hate speech’
They're coming after Tom Segura! Because he mocked "retarded" by substituting with "extra 21st chromosome."

These people bitching about it are acting retarded. The petition urges the streaming giant to “remove the anti-down syndrome rhetoric from the show,” “take the anti-disability sketch out of the trailer for the show,” and “issue a public apology for perpetuating hate speech and stereotype to the Down Syndrome community”.

Re: Comedy...stand-up and otherwise...
I saw that special, and as I recall, he was quite clear about how he (and others) used to use the word "retarded." It was used to describe something that was idiotic in its execution. He compared the usage to the way we used to use the word "gay," not to mean "homosexual," but to mean "lame.'Johnnie wrote: Wed Jan 24, 2018 1:29 pm Campaigners are petitioning Netflix to censor a comedy special featuring ‘hate speech’

These people need to focus their anger elsewhere. Because their petition is retarded and gay. (In the Segurian sense of course).

Yeah, I knew he'd catch shit for that.
Kinda funny how you don't see the LGBTQ(etc) community burning a bunch of energy on this stuff (anymore.)
And, look, I get it. My kids are all over me when I say something or someone is retarded and I've tried (fairly successfully) to "retire the R word," as they say. Just like I, er... guillotined the G word?
But going after comedians is really the lamest thing in the world, just in general.

Going to see Nikki Glaser on Friday.
Re: Comedy...stand-up and otherwise...
I like her the more I see her. I hope she doesn't fall into the Amy Schumer trap of getting one note with it. She's very funny and very confident in herself and that can go the Iliza direction or the Amy direction. One you get to explore a lot of fun sterotypes and tropes and there's a lot of great thinky-comedy in there, the other its another hour of "you'll never believe how big a slut I am, funny right?" jokes.

I've seen her...she is great. Both my wife and I are fans...we liked her show on CC...too bad it got axed after 10 episodes.
Best part about seeing her live is she'll do pictures with people after the show. We went for my birthday but it was my wife that got to take the picture with her.

My thoughts exactly. I've tried his podcast a couple of times, but after 15 minutes and a couple of chuckles it was "enough already."
I find that Adam Corrola is similar.

I've liked some of his stuff but his general style of yelling and swearing a lot to make mediocre material 'funnier' just doesn't work for me. Rogan (and many others) falls into the same boat.

My father gave us the "Occupation Foole" LP when my brother was 11 and I was 9. Still remember routines from the record... and also that my dad was pretty cool for liking it too.
Taking a 13 year old to a comedy show sounds like a great Dad move to me.

We have done Brian Regan and Gaffigan live already, but that was a safe play. I think Dmitry has gone clean after a talk from Seinfeld about lewd as a crutch for sub par writing. However, I can't find anything that says that.Pruitt wrote: Sun Dec 16, 2018 8:15 amMy father gave us the "Occupation Foole" LP when my brother was 11 and I was 9. Watch his Netflix special and YouTube vids and judge prior to if you're worried about it.
Then watch Daniel Sloss's stand ups for yourself. For a 26(!!!) year old, he's absolutely brilliant.

I bought George Carlin's AM/FM album when I was in 7th grade. Lots of drugs and sex comedy on that. Some of it was over my head, but my young mind was not ruined.
