Defunct/relocated sports franchises, based on how much I miss them despite having little to no personal connection:

1. Montreal Expos
2. Quebec Nordiques
3. San Diego Chargers
4. Houston Oilers
5. Hartford Whalers
6. Seattle Supersonics
7. San Diego Clippers
8. Minnesota North Stars
9. Wimbledon F.C.
10. Baltimore Colts (CFL)

Personally the team I miss most is the Hartford Whalers. I can see the Expos as a distant second. No other teams I care to list, except to say that I'd imagine that Cleveland fans miss the Browns.

None of these affect me in any way so I'm going with uniforms I want back:

1. Sonics
2. Whalers
3. Oilers
4. Nords
5. Expos

They need to give us the Oilers name back. I don't know a single fan who likes the current team name.

Unless you're actually from Connecticut or that area, I'm not sure why anyone would give a shit about the Whalers moving. Based on their attendance, almost no one in Connecticut cared about them so why should anyone else? Seems like some kind of collective twee ESPN/Chris Berman nostalgia for a failed franchised that should have been moved long before it was.

I actually think the Texans have one of the least-bad names and visual designs of the recent expansion teams, but yeah, the Oilers should ideally still exist.

It seems like the Whalers somehow ended up as the go-to symbol of teams with a quirky regional identities getting uprooted and moved to sprawl-y Sun Belt locations that weren't really clamoring for them. Luckily Hartford can still sell out their civic center for other events.

I wanted Apollos FWIW. I wanted to stick with the space theme. Toros was my second choice. Texans is just so vanilla especially when they're not ever going to be anywhere near the most popular team in the state.

Breakfasts come and go, Rene.

Now, Hartford, the whale ?

Hey, they only beat Vancouver once, maybe twice in a lifetime.

If 1/100th of northeasterns who wear Hartford apparel now went to a single game per season then, the Whalers wouldn't have left.

Those were some cool - or at least unique logos.

This team was only around for a couple of years, but it's a pretty cool logo...

In reality, the Sonics are #1 here. Them moving was the worst at least since the Browns ditching Cleveland.

Connecticut never would've been awarded an expansion franchise from the NHL had it not been for the WHA / NHL merger. Pretty sure the Whalers actually started in Boston, actually. I went to probably 15-20 games as a kid in CT (I moved to FL in '85).. Thing is, the Bruins were New England's NHL team, upstate NY had the Sabres.. NYC had the Rangers.. and LI had the Islanders. The Whalers' base was Springfield to New Haven, and probably 25 miles in each direction in CT, but once you got into MA that range diminished considerably.

It's a loyalty thing more than anything.

Until either of them became so parsimonious that the best players on the team choose to throw the championship round, neither of them have anything on fucking Comiskey.

Yes, yes he has been.

Unlike Stepien, Ballard owned the richest team in the league and used it a personal piggy bank. I should also point out that under his ownership there was a pedophile ring running out of the building as well.

You really should get acquainted with this piece of shit.

http://articles.latimes.com/1989-11-14/ ... af-gardens

In 1972, Ballard was convicted on 47 of 49 counts of theft and fraud. He was found to have diverted money from the Gardens' accounts to his own.

The 69-year-old Ballard was sentenced to three years in federal penitentiary and, after several weeks' assessment at Millhaven Prison, was assigned to the minimum security Bath Institution. There, he spent his days operating a fork lift in the supply department.

All the while, though, he ran Maple Leaf Gardens business affairs from a public phone in the prison's visitors' room.

Stepien was brutal, Culverhouse as well. But try to imagine the Yankees if Steinbrenner hated the fans so much he wanted the team to lose.
