I saw a piece this morning speculating that the Kings may be interested in signing Joe Thornton. For me, that would be the absolute worst case scenario - beloved long-time star who is still an impact player suiting up for the most hated rival. I will be seriously upset if that comes to pass.

But, frankly I'd be surprised. The Kings have a lot money already tied up in centers Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter. Thornton isn't going to LA for third-line money.

If it makes you feel better, Iginla might go to Edmonton.

In a different world, Calgary would be lauded for picking up two young ~1RDs in trades inside of 25 months.

Can't be made official until July 1st.

Is that a lot in hockey? Genuinely curious.

Currently Toews and Kane are getting 10.5 AAV which are the tops right now. 13.25 would be the biggest in the sport, but the salary cap just went up so there was already reason to believe he was going to outpace the 19/88 contracts, and the cap bump probably netted him a little extra.

TIL before VGK traded Methot, they had the second-largest cap hit in the NHL (down to 5th now and likely to drop some more still as they sell off excess defensemen).

Marleau signs for the Leafs 3 years 6.25 AAV.

Sad to see Marleau go, end of an era.

But that contract is pretty insane, too good to pass up.

Not sure if it's a confirmed story beyond "I want it to be", but I read Shattenkirk and his agent wrote the contract and just gave it to NYR to sign knowing it was too good not to. It's cool how bad he wants to be a Ranger.

Very sorry to see Marleau go. He's been nothing but class for the Sharks, for 20 years. But I can't blame the team for not matching Toronto's offer.
Wyshinski wrote:The San Jose Sharks, with whom he’s played since 1997, would only go for two years, knowing what a third year at $6.25 million on an over-35 contract could mean in 2019, when Logan Couture and Joe Pavelski are both unrestricted. It would be fiscally insane to have a 40-year-old Patrick Marleau on your cap at that point.

NHL contracts vs. NBA contracts.

Connor McDavid's new contract has the same aav as Kelly Olynyk's.

If you really want to compare apples to fucked up apples do the math on an average NHL contract as a percentage of team revenue to an NFL contract. Even with the difference in roster size.

VGK say they're in the top 25 percent of the NHL in ticket revenue. Likely legit as a lot of the lower bowl seats are very pricey.

This year's version of Jimmy Vesey is defenseman Will Butcher. This past season, Butcher was the captain of the NCAA national champion Denver Pioneers, and was awarded the Hobey Baker award (college hockey's version of the Heisman Trophy).

He was drafted a few years back by the Colorado Avalanche. But, they never tried to sign him and in early 2016, told him that they didn't see him as a prospect (even though he was an all-american) and said the Avs had no intention of ever signing him. (Supposedly, that was due to the low opinion of him held by then-coach Patrick Roy.) Well, he continued developing and this year the Avs changed their mind and wanted to sign him. But, guess what? Butcher saw that he was set to become a free agent on August 15. So, like Vesey last year, he is set to entertain offers later this month. Something like half the league has indicated a desire to sign him, as talented puck-moving offensive defensemen don't grow on trees.

Chicago is desperate for a guy like this. Young, currently cheap, could play 3rd line minutes in the second half of the season after Rozival undoubtedly blows a spleen or something.

The Avs are a shitshow.

I'd take my chances on an entry level deal. Skating you can teach, upside is a plus. Chicago doesn't even have 6 D men signed. And Viktor Svedburg/Gustav Forsling are not the answer long term. Jan Rutta hasn't played a game in the NHL yet.

I'm nervous again this year.

Chicago will find a way to circumvent UDFA rules, sign him for $5MM and then have to attach Hartman to get his deal off the books in 2019.
