Re: 2022 NBA Playoffs
that would totally be a bad call if he didn't, you know, make contact when he was reaching with his right arm
it's very hard to take officiating complaints seriously in a game where Steph Curry failed to make a three for the first time in like 234 games and the Celtics still lost by double figures

Re: 2022 NBA Playoffs
At the time I posted that link the game wasn't over and the Celtics came back. So your point is only good in hindsight.
And then there's this bullshit, but I'm sure that's totally Smart's fault too. He pulled himself right, really.
The Celtics played a shit game and deserved to lose. The bench was atrocious. Tatum couldn't hit layups and kept up his errant turnover streak up. Brown can't dribble. Etc...
I'm just saying the exaggerated reactions played a bigger part in fouls than if they were actually fouled. They were already playing like shit and then getting shit calls doesn't help.

And since this is pretty much 99% of the media's reaction to bad calls, we still have shitty officiating with zero accountability.Brontoburglar wrote: ↑Tue Jun 14, 2022 9:18 am

Re: 2022 NBA Playoffs
You can either believe that an NBA player lost a wide open layup because he tripped himself in a way that's never happened in the history of man ... or the camera angle isn't great to catch Williams's knee hitting Payton's foot. Either one or the other.
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: 2022 NBA Playoffs
Didnt look live or replays that it was foot or knee. The guy really did trip over his feet. Williams did get him with the bent arm the step before so probably the right call but he tripped over his own feet on contact less than what is typically called. If he hadnt tripped over his own feet he wouldnt have gotten the call. Looked like one of those cross the ankles soccer flops in the box.
Re: 2022 NBA Playoffs
Klay pushed off. If Smart gets a foul for the Poole shit and Williams gets a foul for the GP2 shit, then where's Klay's foul for this shit?

Re: 2022 NBA Playoffs
Its inconsistent for sure, but if we're talking exaggerated reactions either its both teams doing the same nonsense or Klay Thompson is really, really strong.

Re: 2022 NBA Playoffs
Boston is 3-13 straight up and 4-12 against the spread in their last 16 playoff games in which Tony Brothers has been an official, including last night. But, maybe Scott Foster will get an assignment in Game 6, as Boston did in Game 3, which they won 116-100. From before that game:
Since 2016, home teams in Game 3 of any playoff series with Foster in pinstripes are a blistering hot 10-1 outright and 9-2 ATS.
Also, if history repeats itself, the Celtics will bounce back after getting blown out in Game 2.
Over the last three years, in either the Conference Finals or NBA Finals, teams fresh off a loss with Foster the lead official the following game are also 10-1 straight up and 9-2 versus the number.
The Celtics have played well in general the last three years when Foster’s active, going 7-2 both straight up and ATS in the postseason. The Celtics are 15-6 ATS since 2019 with Foster refereeing, with the regular season included.

no, we just have slow-motion instant replay available from nearly every single angle, the ability to disseminate those clips instantly, and athletes that are getting faster and betterGiff wrote: ↑Tue Jun 14, 2022 10:58 amAnd since this is pretty much 99% of the media's reaction to bad calls, we still have shitty officiating with zero accountability.Brontoburglar wrote: ↑Tue Jun 14, 2022 9:18 am

and, in all likelihood, officiating is better too. it's not perfect and no one is going to argue that it is in any professional sports league. but it'd be extremely egregious and obvious if professional officiating hadn't also gotten better over the last X years like the athletes have

Re: 2022 NBA Playoffs
Is this a safe place to reveal that I think this is the worst version of the NBA I've seen in my life? 27 foot 3s? Just move the damn line back so that you can't even take a baseline 3. It's a joke.

I had an internal thought experiment last night. With this title, this would give more evidence that Curry is the greatest player in franchise history (counting only time with the team) over Wilt, although it's debatable. With 7 titles, the Warriors are moving up the list of titles among North American franchises. If people (justifiably) think Wilt is the best Warrior ever, how many franchises with that many titles would have their best player not be a part of any of them? The Yankees, Canadiens, Lakers, Celtics, Cardinals, Red Wings, Packers, all their best franchise players won titles with them. What franchises won a lot of titles but none by their best player? The only ones that I could think of is the NY/SF Giants with 8 if you think Bonds is their best player over Mays, and the Toronto Maple Leafs with 13 if we think Mats Sundin is their best ever. Am I forgetting anyone?

Yeah. They've set this thing up to be good for a while. They will have to address the bigs though. Did great but Horford will probably get moved and I think they drained 5 years out of rob Williams knee this year.

I was going to say UTAH JAZZ, but I misread your question. But then I got to laugh at the UTAH JAZZ having zero championships. Of course, having two white guys as their best players probably sealed that for them.L-Jam3 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 17, 2022 8:43 am I had an internal thought experiment last night. Remember that time when Jordan led the Bulls to 69 wins, but everyone felt bad for the Mailman and voted him the MVP, and then MJ took his frustrations out on him for the next two Finals. That was funny.

Do we want to open up the can of worms over whether Ewing is the best Knick ever?L-Jam3 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 17, 2022 8:43 am I had an internal thought experiment last night. Professional Leagues make changes (even drastic) to their rules all the time. Back the line up (or remove it entirely) or shrink the cylinder by an inch.Brontoburglar wrote: ↑Fri Jun 17, 2022 1:33 pmso the game is worse because players are shooting better?
II know it'll never happen, and yes I understand my take on this is in the minority.

I've never heard anyone advocate for more missed shots before

Then you haven't been listening. Enoch is right. All this chucking from deep is bad for hoops.
Re: 2022 NBA Playoffs
Disagree. Pounding inside to a dominant big man and then watching him miss free throws is not good hoops.

Re: 2022 NBA Playoffs
I'm not sure why they don't consider making the court bigger. It's astonishing that players the size of NBA players are running around on the same court that middle school kids use. At the very least, make it wider so they can have a proper 3-point line all the way around.
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: 2022 NBA Playoffs
Bigger court and the three-point line should be projected from above and turn on and off at random during the game

a bigger court is going to lead to more scoring

Re: 2022 NBA Playoffs
Agree with that but balance. Teams are more or less forced into as many threes as they can get looks. The threes create spacing and driving lanes but all they do when the beat someone is kick it back out for threes. There should be a bigger incentive to take a wider variety of shots. And they've more or less killed the post scorer. The NBA has a place for Kevin McHale

11 active players have a better career field goal percentages than Kevin McHale (I'm not arguing that Montrezl Harrell is better either, just noting this)HaulCitgo wrote: ↑Fri Jun 17, 2022 3:09 pmAgree with that but balance. while I understand the argument that baseball being optimized to the degree it has been in recent years is a less entertaining product to watch (I'm pretty sure I went over that earlier) there's really no metric that shows that pro basketball has gone down that same path outside of a personal disdain for the amount of threes taken.
and there's really nothing appealing about the midrange jumper either outside of nostalgia

Re: 2022 NBA Playoffs
Do you really get more enjoyment out of a 23 foot jumper than 18? When was the last time you saw a turnaround fadeaway 3?
