Re: The Lunch Thread
Today's lunch is kale and swiss chard salad with carrots, onions, peppers and sunflower seeds with homemade ranch dressing. I'm eating a hard boiled egg on the side. It's rather tasty.

So you're saying you're amused by the idea that we can get a good Jersey Mike's Sub in Kentucky?

Re: The Lunch Thread
Anyone like Firehouse subs? I think they're pretty good. I've never had Jersey Mike's. I'll have to try them. Nearly all the other chain sandwich shops are meh.
I'm a fan of Cheba Hut. They're only in a handful of states, but they're subs are great. And the marijuana motif makes me chuckle.

Have one on the hill (I believe it was founded by CU grads, or dropouts) I feel like I have to smoke about 3 joints in order to eat one of their subs (they are really good, it's just a shitload of food.)Johnnie wrote:

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
Re: The Lunch Thread
Going there in uniform on 4/20 for lunch some years back when I was in Tucson was quite the highlight. I walked in and people just stared.Rush2112 wrote:Have one on the hill (I believe it was founded by CU grads, or dropouts) I feel like I have to smoke about 3 joints in order to eat one of their subs (they are really good, it's just a shitload of food.)Johnnie wrote:

I told them to smoke one for me because I couldn't. They laughed. I think I got a free goo ball with my 'blunt.'

Roast beef is worthy of its own thread, but I'll ask the question here.
Is there any cold cut roast beef that is worth a damn other than Boar's Head, and if so, where might I procure it? I'm not talking about cook your own and buy a meat slicer, is there any other way to get roast beef that is not crap for just a few bucks and with minimal effort?

A Jersey Mike's ad claiming to have good roast beef is what prompted this question.
Re: The Lunch Thread
Been to Cheba Hut once, didn't realize it was a chain. Took about 20 minutes to get my sandwich, and nobody there seemed too arsed about it, so I'd say it's legit.
Re: The Lunch Thread
Had a pretty good grilled beef bánh mì if I can keep out of mind the coughing fit the dude had as he was bagging it up for me.

Went to a burger join in town I had never been to but saw a friend recommend on Facebook. Best burger in town and not close. Bad Wolf burgers if you find yourself in town!

Had a pretty good shrimp red curry Thai dish for lunch today. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever had a bad meal of Thai food.

Weird, I had a Thai shrimp wrap for lunch. It was pretty great. Had kelp noodles and kale in it.Sabo wrote:Had a pretty good shrimp red curry Thai dish for lunch today. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever had a bad meal of Thai food.

We had pizza today. Funny how that happens. Cops get shot somewhere? Feed your local cops pizza.
I'm glad though. Minimum staffing means I'm locked in my office for 12 hours and all I brought today was oatmeal.

This might be being too obvious, but if you have a quality local butcher/deli shop in your town, that is the way to go.Brontoburglar wrote:I like DiLusso deli meat. Pretty much the only sandwich stuff I buyRex wrote:Roast beef is worthy of its own thread, but I'll ask the question here.

Re: The Lunch Thread
I'm in the South so I don't. The less crappy places have Boars Head.
Re: The Lunch Thread
I've spent years trying to find a "less bad" cold cut and I've decided to just say fuck it and go back to Boars Head. Its just better than everything else, including 95% of the real sliced turkey/chicken/whatever.
Re: The Lunch Thread
Yeah. Just to be clear, I'm perfectly happy with Boars Head. Am just curious as to whether I am right to ignore everything else.
Re: The Lunch Thread
We need to compile an official list of mainstream products that are indisputable king (or queen!) of their category, over all other brands and/or artisanal or home versions. Boars Head and Hellmann's are my first two.

Heinz ketchup. Only serial killers or poors would buy any other kind of ketchup.

Kroger has a sriracha ketchup that is amazing. Also, Whataburger's ketchup is so good, they bottle and sell it in a grocery chain here in Texas.brian wrote:Heinz ketchup. Only serial killers or poors would buy any other kind of ketchup.

I'll pretend like I didn't just read that.
Re: The Lunch Thread
OK, that's fair, but I was talking about a staple. I've had chipotle and jalapeño ketchup before and that's better than "plain" ketchup, but that's not what the idea of the question was I think.

French's mustard, too.
Kind bars? I just had my first one of those this morning. I think the Clif bars are better.

Re: The Lunch Thread
Sorry I missed this earlier, but Dietz and Watson deli stuff is excellent (better than Boars Head IMO) if you can find it. Not sure where you are, but I see them in some Safeways and Albertsons.Rex wrote:Roast beef is worthy of its own thread, but I'll ask the question here.

I would like expensive whiskey.
We only have beer & wine...

Re: The Lunch Thread
Dietz and Watson is solid. I'd argue Boar's Head is better, but D&W is usually cheaper and almost as good. It's usually about $7-9 lb. here in Nevada.

Re: The Lunch Thread
I know we try hard not to ban here, but D&W over Boars Head is a bannable offense.
And there are plenty of ketchups better than Heinz, usually ones that are more tomato and spices and less sugar and salt.
