I don't know what happened to make the cops stop the guy in the first place, but he escalated the situation big time. He obviously wanted to embarrass the officers and make a point, but fuck, you just don't escalate shit with cops! As a teenager, my father taught me not to trust police, which was a shock since he was a parole officer. But above not trusting them, he taught me to do everything to deescalate, because they can make bad decisions. I'm probably overly paranoid in police situations, but if I get pulled over, I keep my hands on the wheel and don't move without asking permission. I'm polite as fuck and deferential. At the same time, he taught me not to say a word beyond letting them know you are compliant, but never let them search my car without a warrant and his words, "the police are not your fucking friends."

I was in car with an FBI agent and we were detained at the border by Canadian Customs, as one idiot in the car lost his license and had no passport. Situation played out much differently. Customs inspector looked about 19 years old, and acted like a star-struck celebrity when he looked at the badge. I was just terrified because I was still working for US Customs, and another idiot brought an ounce of weed despite the FBI agent forcefully warning him not to. He got all sweaty a few miles from the border, and decided to tell us at that point. Luckily they never searched.

I think if you're an FBI agent with a friend(?) filming the whole thing, you do exactly that. Don't give them early heads up so they can just move along to the next guy who presumably isn't FBI.

Shit could have easily turned violent before they saw his badge. I don't care who you are, it's stupid to instigate with the police, he was resisting the handcuffs, calling them stupid, and telling them he'd take both of them. Not smart.

The other thing, he kept saying he wasn't the guy they thought he was. What is the cop supposed to do, take a suspect at their word?

Sort of. Everything produced in NK is overseen by the government, so it's all propaganda, and everyone in the video knows if they betray the truth, they will be tortured and killed, so of course they seem stiff, unnatural and terrified. Any foreigners in NK are followed by handlers that very closely control everywhere they go and everything they see. Most of the people foreigners see walking in the streets or taking public transportation are essentially actors put on the street to make things seem normal.

The YouTube algorithm is something else. It has put "refurbishing and renovating old houses" on the home page. So in the last couple days I've watched these videos:

And the latter video has led me to this Instagram page:

It's definitely not shocking that my generation has to find a way around the housing and cost of living issues we face and get creative. And this certainly fits that bill. I had no idea that this was a thing, but it's really cool -- especially with them being Victorian homes. Such cool architecture.

After I got out of school in the 80s, I lived for awhile with a friend in Denver in an old run-down Victorian he had bought and was restoring, so he could flip it. He had already done it a couple times with good financial results. But then, unfortunately, the economy went to shit and he ended up underwater on his debt with no buyers, and ended up in bankruptcy.
