yeah it's odd that some people, and especially people on those yelp reviews, are so appalled at the murder of another living being, yet have no problem at all torturing/ruining/murdering/flaying the dentist.

Yeah. I was the one who first posted the story, so I was pretty quick with the "Hey, look at this asshole" sentiment, but now...the guy's still a big asshole, but the sheer level of vitriol has probably surpassed what he deserves. If you look at the details of the story, it's plausible he was unaware that the killing was illegal and of the significance of that particular lion. This is a guy with a wife and kids, and his career and his life have been effectively ruined. Good job, unimpeachably virtuous people on social media.

I am trying to work up sympathy for him, but having a hard time. Maybe don't go kill a lion here in the 21st century?

Basically, we've become too comfortable since we've isolated ourselves from these immediate dangers. Everyone is out to lunch. Just knowing that you could have to fight off a lion attack at any time would keep us on our toes and that awareness would carry over to other aspects of society.

Not that plausible, considering that he's already been busted once here in the states for poaching a black bear.

Palmer had a permit to hunt bears within a certain area near Phillips, in the north of the state. But on September 1, 2006, he was part of a group of people who killed a black bear 40 miles outside this permitted zone, according to the court documents from April 2008.

Realizing what they had done, the group agreed that "if any authorities were to ask where the bear had been killed, they would say" it was hunted within the correct area, the documents added.

They transported the carcass to a registration station where they certified the animal had been killed legally, the documents said, adding that the body was later taken to Minnesota, where Palmer lives.

So he knew exactly what he was doing...

This reaction that people are having reminds me of the Michael Vick stuff with dogs and rape stands. I think it's outrageous that he killed the lion, but I'm not going to get choked up like Jimmy Kimmel.

I'd say its an aggravating factor. Being there and killing the lion just because you want to kill a lion makes you a dick. Paying an exorbitant amount for the sole purpose of traveling half the globe away to kill a "beloved" lion makes you a super dick. And hopefully a criminal.
