So how massive of a scandal is this if Russia scored like Senegal just did?

AFAIK, the whole reason for needing permission to re-enter the field is to avoid getting an advantage like that.

Literally, the players for Poland had their backs to that sideline as the ball was played back - they had no idea they had to account for anyone over there.

It would be huge but it will take more than that to get Russia by Egypt, Salah or no.

I didn't see it, but Lalas was supposed to do a special on the Mexican team introducing the players and back stories in hope casual fans watched. I don't think this strategy worked, at least I didn't see any of it, and haven't heard anyone discuss rooting for Mexico.
Landon Donovan has been on it.

Went over well, particularly with some of his former teammates.

To be a little bit contrarian on that Senegal goal, there was no break on when the signal was given. The Senegal player was about to play what amounts to a clearance, then came one of the worst backpasses you’ll see at this level. You could say the back pass would not have been played if he knew a player was about to be let on, but I have my doubts about that.

That ref is done at this WC.

You just don't waive a guy on while the ball is pinging around like that. Just a really bad lapse in game management from the ref. I've never seen a ref waive a guy on while the play is that unsettled.

Usually ones that hit a leg and ride up to your own hand don't get called. VAR didn't catch it either.

Can Iran get a draw? They have one of the best defenses in the world. Remember in 2014 they only lost to Messi in injury time.
In Asian qualifying (i know i know) they only gave up 5 goals in 18 matches. They set a record for 12 consecutive clean sheets, 1108 minutes

Plus the clean sheet against Morocco.

90 mins of ons-sided attacking = stinker

Although this URU:KSA match isn't bad.

Now that I think more about it. Iran playing for two draws might not be good enough. Three teams could have 5 points and they would lose in goal difference because of the 3-3 draw.

So really Iran have nothing to lose today. Even if they lose 10-0 they just have to beat Portugal to advance, which they might have to do anyways.

Managers seldom seem to see it this way, though you're right. They have to beat either Spain or Portugal to advance. Three draws isn't going to do it.

How does a 3-3 draw affect goal difference? Both Spain and Portugal game out of that match with a gd of 0.

If Iran draw their next two matches they have a GD of +1.
If Spain and Portugal both beat Morocco, they would have a GD of at least +1 and their 3-3 draw would trump any of Iran's draws.

I thought Iran drew their opener. My bad. Two draws (as unlikely as that is) could be enough for them to go through.

I'm a little more dubious than degen on Iran's defense though.

Portugal beat Morocco 1-0
If Spain beats Morocco 1-0 too

and if Iran-Spain and Iran-Portugal are both draws (say 0-0)

Then Spain and Portugal would both have 5 points with 4 goals for and 3 against, that would beat Iran who would have 5 points but only 1 goal for and 0 against

No, I hear you but there's other results that could see them going through with 5 points. I get the overall point that they still probably need to win one of their two remaining games.

As long as undeserving China gets in and we ensure average US NEVER miss... Crisis averted.

I know what you mean. This is exactly what Panama tried to do. But other teams like US, MEX and Costa Rica would at least ATTEMPT TO PLAY OFFENSE.

This style is horrible for the game.
