not even sure players care about penalties, suspensions or not, they just want to send messages. Flames and Rangers meet twice a year.

Maybe you can condition that away. If you look at the NFL example, which seems like a good one, if a player eats a cheap shot there's a much better chance you'll see teammates running to the refs than throwing punches.

Speaking of “condition that way”, hockey players are taught and conditioned from an early age that intimidation is a tool you use, and any attempt at such against you demands immediate retaliation, or else your manhood is open to question. It is retrograde, regressive, and reactionary. But, the powers-that-be like it this way.

I’m sure all these arguments were made about limiting fighting 10 years ago too. Players are bigger and faster and the ice is the same size; it’s change or deal with some terrible future aftermath.

3-9 in OT. Insane streak of OT games still. Nice to finally steal one.

Holy fuck that team is good though.

Good deal for the Rangers, imho. Tarasenko was unhappy in STL. This might energize him.

This takes the Rangers out of the Timo Meier sweepstakes , as well (if they were ever in it). Gotta believe Timo goes to Winnipeg or New Jersey.

Meier to join up with countrymen Hischer and Siegenthaler feels like a great fit, especially now that Hughes is week to week.

The Red Wings' broadcast last night mentioned shortly after the game started that he was out last night, but listed as day-to-day.

I don’t love the Tarasenko trade because he only plays in one zone and I think better forwards will be traded for 1sts, but I couldn’t have enjoyed any run with Kane and it’s not trading a kid so it’s around a 70th percentile outcome.

Remind me of this when Meier or DeBrincat returns way less than expected.

Yeah, Meier is a younger, more physical Tarasenko, who also is willing to backcheck.

Sid got his first game misconduct in his career. Got it for continuing to argue with the ref. NHL refs (Hockey refs in general) are usually pretty tolerant so he must have gone on way too long or really crossed the line.

Yeah, it's a bummer he's going to miss the stadium game. Both of his parents are in Russia... Assuming this about one of them, I hope one of his oligarch buddies can get him in and out without too much hassle.

Unlike a lot of Russians, at least it wasn't from falling out of a fifth-floor balcony or polonium-235.

(I mean, I assume since Putin and Ovi are best buds.)

I mean... His dad was a star from Dynamo Moscow, which rather famously has ties to the KGB.

Lots of pics of Putin and Ovi together. Some have tried to spin it that Ovi has to be pro-Putin in order to protect his family back home.

Meh. Not sure I buy that, but I also haven't dug around very much on it.

Love the uniforms for the stadium series. Bu the Caps helmets look like they are from late 70s/early 80s roller derby.

Am I wrong that the leafs side of the trade looks really solid? He’s not peak O’Reilly but he impacts the game even if he’s not scoring and they got a good 4C as well.

Calgary goes to 0-7-1 all-time at T-Mobile Arena but on the bright side this is its first ever loser point in Vegas and before today had only led 2 out of 420 minutes in Vegas.

Used to be Anahiem. Flames did not win a game in Anahiem for over 10 years.

Flames have lost 22 one goal games this year. That how you miss the playoffs

I'm shocked to see the Islanders and the Red Wings where they are in the standings. Several teams that were looking great a year ago might miss the playoffs.

Great to see a race in the East again. I think last year the 8 playoff teams pulled away by Christmas.

Jesus. This Buffalo-Wash game is a little bonkers. 2-2 with 3 left in the 1st.

Almost zero defense. I mean, it's fun, but c'mon guys.

And each team has had 2-3 breakaways that could've easily had this game 5-5 or thereabouts.

Kane to the Rangers almost done just working out how to get around the cap. Need a 3rd team to take a contract or 10.

The Eastern playoffs is going to be a bloodbath.

ha - that's always interesting.

slightly frustrated that the Sabres didn't beat that offer, because they easily could have (if they wanted to). 1st+2nd this year + any number of prospects they're not going to have room for in the next few years. Meier fits the age profile of the team perfectly, and esp with Tuch out for a month. dammit.

it took me until ~January to let myself buy back into being a fan; the last 2 years (let alone 10) had made me give up on this franchise. i know i'm not the only one - lotta trust issues, but <knock on everything> damn - they seem to be doing something right.

going to my first game in over 3 years next week vs the Oilers, which might be a mistake :D
