Helluva time for my development team to be dragged (not quite kicking and screaming) into something resembling modern software design processes and for the word "grooming" to become a part of my everyday vocabulary.

We just consolidated floors and they moved the receptionist to my floor. Right next to the damn bathrooms. And our new receptionist is something to look at. It's a tad embarrassing to come out after taking a shit. I expect her to look at her watch every time.

I applied for jobs at Raytheon yesterday.

If and when I get hired I may have an office (unless I luck out with the hybrid job) and I'll get to see how a non military work environment is like.

It'll also be my third job ever. Hard as that is to believe.

Should I not have told him about the bears?
I'd like to know what the cutoff times will be for the Montana Ultra... and if you don't have them yet, can you please send what it was the previous year?

Thank you!

Stay Awesome,
Hi Brandon,

Thank you for contacting Spartan US!

Official cut-off times will not be announced until the Race Day Program is published a week prior to the race. Please see below for a detailed description of last year's cut-off times:

COURSE CUTOFFS
Ultra, Beast, Super, and Sprint participants must be at the finish line by 9:00pm. Any racers remaining on the course at 9:00pm will be removed from the course for their own safety and will be considered a DNF (Did Not Finish). This means you will not get a finishing time, medal, or shirt. The race will not count towards your trifecta and you will not get a refund or a future race credit. Additional course cutoffs will be announced prior to Race Day and Spartan reserves the right to modify, change cutoffs, and remove racers for health and safety issues or unforeseen events.
● 2:30PM: Any ULTRA participant that has not reached the TRANSITION AREA by this time will be removed from course.
● 3:30PM: Any ULTRA participant that has not reached INVERTED WALL by this time will be removed from course.
● 4:30pm: Any SUPER participant that has not reached MULTI RIG by this time will be removed from course.
● 5:45PM: Any ULTRA participant that has not reached MULTI RIG by this time will be removed from course.
● 6:00PM:
○ HEADLAMP - Any participant on course must have a working headlamp on them at this time. If you do not have a headlamp, you risk being pulled from the course
○ Any BEAST participant that has not reached INVERTED WALL by this time will be removed from course.
● 7:00PM: Any BEAST participant that has not reached MULTI RIG by this time will be removed from course.
● 9:00PM: Course closed. Any racers who haven’t finished by this time will be pulled from course.

I hope that you find this helpful and please let me know if you have any further questions.

AROO!
Hi Kyle,

Just to clarify:

So if for any of these cutoff times, if you haven't arrived at those locations by that time, you get a DNF?

Also, they actually remove you from the course? So if you're behind a bit and you don't hit the first cutoff, you can't continue even if you want to?...

Stay Awesome,
Hey Brandon,

I understand that it sounds a bit draconian but I assure you that our cut-off times are strictly for safety concerns and we are not looking to discourage or shame anyone. They are also extremely conservative.

Take the first cut-off for instance. If you start your Ultra at 6:30 AM, that transition area would be after the first lap, half way through, approximately, 15-16 miles. It would be extremely uncommon for someone to take 8 hours to hit that unless they were having medical issues. We also need to ensure that all of our racers are off the course by 9 PM. Especially in the mountains of Montana with the grizzly bears!

I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any further concerns.

AROO!

Oh damn. Why are you leaving? Better pay elsewhere?

I'll be working in the supply chain section. Where did you work?

As a former military dude with an active clearance and an MBA, just how much money should I ask for? I feel like "all of it" is the right answer, but the jobs I applied to are P3. Should I look into P4 ones? Is the responsibility level that big a difference?

How often, if ever, were you pee tested?

Long story short... I asked my boss for a raise last summer. Told him I was constantly having recruiters come to me, sometimes offering big raises. But I liked what I was doing and didn't want to play the go-get-a-competing-offer game because that's a slippery slope.

He told me no, not without more responsibility. But my program is somewhat unique at Raytheon so it's hard to come up with something and he didn't really try very hard. I told him if something interesting came along I was going to listen. He said ok.

Last fall I had a recruiter from Blue Origin reach out. Things picked up in a hurry, and now I start with them Monday.

My specific job at Raytheon was great. For the rest of the week I am a SW manager on a commercial program, working on the scheduling system for Maxar's imaging satellites (when you see Maxar's pictures in the news, my team built the software that schedules them). Cool job, fantastic group, great customer. One of the only commercial programs in all of Raytheon.

But leadership at Raytheon leaves something to be desired. My manager routinely cancelled meetings sometimes our one-on-ones, citing "higher priorities". His boss was great, but she left the company last summer out of frustration. I never once heard from her replacement. And last year the CEO stood up in front of everyone and told us we aren't here for top dollar, we're here for the mission. While he makes $20M a year. Lol, nope. The world is changing dude.

My move is a bit of a risk, like I said my team was fantastic. But I've also been trying to get out of the defense world for a while (so tired of hearing about our warfighters and defending democracy). So a chance to work as a lead on Blue's lunar lander program was something I couldn't pass up.

Ok, not so short story sorry...

I've only ever been tested when starting a job. And I've worked several defense jobs, including ones that required a TS clearance. I got my TS again here, never used it, and was not tested again as part of the process.

Salary related questions... How many rough years of applicable experience would you say you have? And you've got a master's in a related field, right? I'd say at least a P3, maybe P4. Are you thinking interested in some type of management role now or down the road?

That all probably sounds pretty negative. It's a similar story at all the big defense companies, in my experience. But I think Raytheon is running into some unique problems due to their size (~180,000 employees).

They are having huge hiring issues right now, with trying to fill a few thousand openings but attrition outpacing hiring.

At all these defense companies get every dollar you can to start, raises top out around 3% after that. Even for great annual reviews.

Bachelor's in transportation and logistics management. MBA with a concentration in Supply Chain.

15 years as a logistician. 6 as an aircraft maintainer.

Management role....maybe. I have to gauge management in civilian world versus management in the military. Being a supervisor while serving SUCKED. If my supervisee got in trouble off duty it was my fault for not being a better leader. Even if it was 2 am and they couldn't handle their alcohol. We'll see.

Let me check the job listings tomorrow. I think you're right on that P3/P4 border. And the clearance will have value for salary/bonus, though may not affect grade.

I'll check and get back to you tomorrow.

More tomorrow, but thinking about it... Absolutely apply for P4. Make them offer a P3 if that's what they want to do. They definitely will not offer a P4 proactively.

Looking at the internal Job Catalog this morning... I'd say the MBA and your experience puts you squarely in P4 range. Given the chance in an interview, talk up any leadership experience you have. There will be the typical questions about how you handled a tough situation, a tough coworker, etc. This gives you a chance to steer the conversation and highlight proactive steps and positive responses. Don't embellish more than you need to, not that they will likely be looking to trap you by any means.

And you are not responsible for people outside of work here. My management experience here has been fairly good overall, but it has been difficult to get support from my superiors.

I'm not sure if RMD is doing these in Tucson, but I know here in CO there have been hiring events, where they host a reception or something in a hotel conference room, have people review resumes, and do interviews. I have heard they make some offers on the spot or within a day or so. Any they are more personality type interviews than technical.

Check out /r/Raytheon on Reddit for some other opinions/tips for negotiating too. Things like a 4th week of PTO, etc seems to be what a lot of people are getting.

Also Raytheon does shut down between Christmas and New Years, except for mission critical things. This does come at the expense of a lot of other holidays (MLK, Presidents, Veterans Days), so make sure you balance that out.

Awesome. I will absolutely do that. And I started following the Raytheon subreddit recently. There were some good nuggets there.

My job in the Air Force for the last 15 years was high vis. My line of authority went from me to the Installation Deployment Officer (typically a GS-11/12) to the Wing commander. And at Kirtland I was the alternate IDO. So I could do what I had to do directly if need be.

And when I'm deployed? Jesus. Everyone is friends with the guy that can get them on a plane bound to get them home. Every fucking commander in theater knew me. And every Chief tried to assert some sort of authority over me. Drove me nuts, but I never budged.

And I had to run the section, usually filled with young people who have never done this before, at the same time. It was constantly stressful.

And my wife loved reminding me about how federal holidays aren't a thing with Raytheon. I'd be chillin' on a Monday and she'd be like "It's not like this in the civilian world." So I've definitely been prepared for that. Haha.

FWIW, in my experience working with defense companies, you're going to be working with a LOT of ex-military folks.

Given all this, a P4 is what you should be shooting for. Let me know if there's anything else I can help with.

There's definitely good and bad, just like anywhere. The work should be pretty stable, it's just a matter of figuring out how to navigate the politics. Which I'm sure you're familiar with in a similar flavor. Just be prepared for the eye-rolling at all-hands meetings, etc. Especially when they are trying to tell you why you are working at Raytheon (same for Lockheed, etc).

This place sucks ass. Never worked for such a dysfunctional operation and they somehow seem to expect me to fix issues with other departments than my own. So I'm probably not long for here one way or another. Gonna try to stick around long enough to try and find something else but might have to just quit in a couple weeks if things don't improve, job or not.
