You were in the seminary???
Oh, yeah, lol. I guess that isn't something I've ever really discussed in here. Yes, my dad was a United Methodist minister, so I grew up a preacher's kid and drifted into it after college. Got halfway through - I was REALLY good at it but...I also don't actually believe the shit you need to believe to do it and at some point that cognitive dissidence got too much to square and I quit and Jen and I moved to Nashville. Then on to Memphis for law school and that's where I was to start my legal career and when this site came into existence. And then 20 more years passes and here we are. And what not. I had a front row seat and have had a front row seat to the insanity that has taken over Protestants - basically anyone who could think walked the fuck away from religion and those that were left are Christian nationalists at this point (that's an over-simplification but also, broad strokes, not wrong either...)

Wow. That must be especially difficult to deal with.

Yeah, mine too. Most UMC clergy were more the god loves you types - that was what UM used to be. They've finally schismed over ordination of gay clergy and gay marriage which...unreal that was still an argument but the hard right evangelical types have split I guess. Fuck 'em all really. My understanding of christianity was pretty rooted in the do unto others as you would have them do unto you thing, and an understanding that the Jesus figure really cared about everyone and realizing that, holy shit, NOT TOO MANY OTHERS SEEM TO HAVE LANDED IN THAT BASIC PART OF THE FAITH so I peaced out especially with the whole refuse to say the words espousing belief in Holy Trinity etc etc etc.

In any event, what is left of mainline protestant christianity is a shell of what it was, mega churches are evil as shit, and the christo-fascists who are trying to finish taking this country over are beyond terrifying. Have a good monday.

Look at that...Rich Lowry, editor of National Review and the guy who saw "starbursts" during the Sarah Palin/Biden debate back in 2008, and the recent writer of the nonsensical "Trump can win on Character" op-ed in the New York Times, just casually dropping the N-Word on the Megyn Kelly Show.

How long until Trump does it? Or until Vance breaks out the "they can say it...why can't we?" argument?

While I think it's funny to suggest he was about to full Tarantino, I think that may have been just a normal run of the mill slip up. I'll go Hanlon's Razor, but certainly wouldn't be surprised if I were wrong.

It would be really unfortunate if the companies who advertise on her show like Birch Gold, DirecTV, FanDuel, MyPatriotSupply, and Walmart learn about this.

(and yes, I get that the people running those companies probably share his views and say it in private, but they also wouldn't want to be associated with people who say them so casually. Money talks.)

I'm the opposite way on this. The only related word with a short-i vowel sound is immigrant, but that starts with "im," and there's no innocent way to get from there to where he ended up.

Think you answered your own question there.

The Teamsters membership at large seems to have some huge logic gap where they think they’re so powerful they’re immune to most governmental interference.

The leadership is not so Pollyanna-ish so there’s a big disconnect between the leadership and the rank and file.

As in much of America, the IBT members who support Trump appear to mostly come from red states. Now, the New York, Wisconsin and Michigan teamsters have joined the west coast in endorsing Harris.

All states should really be splitting them according to popular vote (rounded off, of course), which would allow them to keep this arcane system while also making all states matter. Too rational I guess.

Several states have adopted the National Popular Vote initiative, where the state pledges its electoral votes to whoever wins the popular vote nationally. The laws state that this allocation will go into effect when 270 EVs' worth of states adopt it.

I think they've gotten about 180 EVs on board. But of course, it's only blue states that have done that.
