Re: The Live Music thread...
Before I could stop myself I bought a ticket to see the Middle Age Dad Jam Band in NY in a couple of weeks on the strength of their latest IG video (Touch Me). The “The State” shirt put it over the top. Beer is a hell of a drug.
I felt aswirl with warm secretions.

That was probably the closest I’ll ever get to seeing a live show by The State, and the music was a lot of fun, they have a great set of musicians playing with them.
Marino and Wain met at NYU and seemed excited to be playing Irving Plaza.
I might be too old to stand up that long and stay up this late.

Re: The Live Music thread...
How was the border crossing after the show?
Re: The Live Music thread...
Not bad at all...maybe 20 minutes? I heard the next day was chaos. It took someone 6 hours from Vancouver to SeaTac. We did the Lynden point of entry on the way there and didn't have to wait at all. I forgot to sign my Passport and he said he could deny me entry, but could tell why we were going, so he let it pass. The girls gave him bracelets haha. It was really an unforgettable time. The only hiccup was that we went downtown first to have lunch and explore a little, then the plan was to park at a casino close to the airport and take the light rail. We just didn't have any directions back from downtown cause we had no service. Finally stopped at a supermarket and someone was nice enough to pull up directions and let Kelli take photos of them. My oldest was stressing the fuck out, which helped me keep my cool honestly.

Glad to hear it wasn't too bad. It can get really bad after big events (like over 2 hours).Giff wrote: Wed Dec 11, 2024 3:20 pmNot bad at all...maybe 20 minutes? I heard the next day was chaos. I should have warned you about downloading the maps before you got into Vancouver. Its always an issue, and I always forget that my data plan doesn't work there.

This exact scenario is happening again this Friday night and Saturday night. Can't fucking wait. I haven't seen any live music since August.bfj wrote: Fri Feb 16, 2024 9:58 am My buddy from way back when loves the band the Disco Biscuits. He goes to tons of their shows. Took bass lessons from their bassist online during COVID, tutors the guy's daughter in math, etc. He was given a Golden Ticket by the band for a +1 to any show they play forever. I've seen them once and had a great time. They are playing at the Fillmore in Silver Spring, MD in a few weeks and he's booked us a VIP package of seats (mostly a GA standing room venue), backstage access, soundcheck and early access for both shows. To be fair, my friend and I could go to the ballet and I'd still be just as excited, but these dates in March are circled for me. I miss this guy and I'm excited to see him. And I need to go see some live music.

The Filmore is tremendous. My daughter and I saw the Breeders there and we posted up right next to the VIP "box." Seemed like a cool way to spend a night.

Re: The Live Music thread...
Agreed. Nice place to see a show and not too far away from me. We may actually use the VIP box this time. Last time we ended up staying on the rail all night for both shows. I think I will take the more mellow approach this time.Nonlinear FC wrote: Thu Dec 26, 2024 2:07 pm The Filmore is tremendous. I didn’t. I “raged” on the rail and drew compliments from younger fans for “getting it”. Back for night 2 tonight.bfj wrote: Thu Dec 26, 2024 2:11 pmAgreed. That’ll be great. When we saw Lucero and the Vandoliers last month, we brought four people along who didn’t know of the Vandoliers. They were all very impressed with their live show.

I would just shout “PLAY POSSUM KINGDOM” at both bands, but I do that at every concert I attend so at least it it would make some sense this time. Have fun!

Re: The Live Music thread...
Jokes aside, Boston Calling's lineups have really gone in the shitter.
The year I went the lineup was
The National
Lorde
The Replacements
Nas x The Roots
Neutral Milk Hotel
Childish Gambino
Spoon
Girl Talk
The 1975
Volcano Choir (they got rained out, sadly)
Twenty One Pilots
The War on Drugs
The Hold Steady
Lake Street Dive
Bleachers
White Denim
Sky Ferreira
Future Islands
San Fermin
S. Carey
Clifflight
Gentlemen Hall
I don't think I'll ever see another lineup so stacked.

Every year the Boston Calling lineup comes out I think "was that what I went to see a long time ago" and then learn it was some one-off "BMP Fest" from The Phoenix in 2009. Ra Ra Riot -> Passion Pit -> Metric (acoustic, boo) then leave before Gaslight Anthem, The Airborne Toxic Event and The Bravery.
And yeah, that lineup above sucks ass. Wonder if Homecoming has siphoned away some of the previous acts if they're only looking for a once per year deal.

I don't think the Dessners are involved in Boston Calling at all any more. I think they were back in 2014. The venue when I saw them was essentially right outside City Hall, not Harvard Athletic Complex.mister d wrote: Mon Jan 06, 2025 2:20 pm Every year the Boston Calling lineup comes out I think "was that what I went to see a long time ago" and then learn it was some one-off "BMP Fest" from The Phoenix in 2009. Using some of my fantasy football winnings to go see Shane Smith & the Saints next month in Detroit. I've always heard the weather there in February is nice! This was one of the only shows coming up that wasn't sold out or didn't conflict in another way, plus my wife's best friend lives there and has an extra room, so Kelli's excited. That'll make up for the weather.

They don’t like being a tenant and know real money comes from owning your building and the various events that can fill a new building.
Pretty sure that’s why there hasn’t yet been a push to get a WNBA in Philly.
Current owners moved the practice facility from a medical university on the edge of the city to a state of the art facility in Camden.
They got so petty about things that their court showed the arena sponsors name in small white font so as not to be pronounced.
Long story short, they’ve been angling at a move for some time and had to let their lease run its course.
The area where they are proposing the new arena is in downtown which would be a nightmare for folks driving in. But it sits on top of the regional rail system and a subway. Would be ideal for folks commuting in by rail.
Plus that area has been a bit if a shit hole for years. Jefferson has expanded their footprint and there has been some nice development going on in the general area. But Market East is still a shit show for the most part. Sits adjacent to the most historic section in the country (Independence Hall). Generally a broken window for folks that stay in hotels and walk towards the historic area.
Chinatown is also adjacent to the property. They’ve fought against the Phillies stadium moving downtown. I am not sure how this whole thing shakes out. I think it goes in and this Camden threat is just part of the game. For those that don’t know, Camden sits directly across the river from down town Philly. So its not like they would be moving a great distance.
With all that said, if they get the arena, I could see them getting a WNBA team and the arena would be a win for the area. Just have to see what concessions need to be made for the local areas.

Re: The Live Music thread...
because I am forever a million years late to stuff, am I the last one on earth to know about nugs.net?
Signed up for it because I can get livestreamed Billy Strings concerts on it, but didn't realize it also had recorded live concerts for him going back years.
And, I further ALSO didn't realize it has hundreds and hundreds of artists/groups w/ live concert recording access going back decades. Like, Fleetwood Mac Rumors tour live concerts from 1977 and what not. Anyway, there are too many bands/artists to list (and certainly not all bands are on there but a lot are) but there are a ton (thousands?) of concerts available to listen to from hundreds of groups on it - it costs - I think I got a it on special for 100 for the year, but I've already gotten my money's worth, I think.
In any event, just a heads up in case I wasn't actually the last to know about this for those love (recorded) live concerts.

I've seen a few single-song performances and an interview on one of the news programs but that is the extent of my familiarity with him.
