This is galling. Galling! Yeah, I know that the Blues are bad this year, but still. McDavid is such a unique player. Every sports fan should watch him when given the opportunity.

I was trying to think of similar athletes, guys who were must-watch because they did things that nobody else could do. I think Barry Sanders is a good comp. And sadly maybe a little too on the nose, because it looks like McDavid is going to spend his best years on a bad team with an inept front office.
Yeah, I made the point that all NHL players are fast but in person it's somehow ridiculously obvious how much faster he is. It's not even fair, it's like a cheat code.

Sharing my Bolts season Tix this year, and the Oil game was a must draft.

A friend surprised me with tickets to the Pens/Oil game in February. I haven't actually seen him in person since he's been in the NHL. I miss those road trips to see him with the Otters. (Actually spent some time on YouTube earlier today watching old Otters highlights. I'm a dork.)

NBCSN is in full-on hagiography-mode tonight. I'll allow it. Okay, now it's time to be let down.

Oh, and Draisaitl is a winger again tonight, after playing great at center on Monday.

I've sorta converted that aforementioned friend into an Oilers fan. I've shown him the similarities between the Oilers and Penguins. Generational talent, but underperforming team. Nonexistent bottom-line scoring. #1 goalie who might not actually be a #1 goalie. Highly touted young RW who hasn't done much in the NHL yet.

I wrote a bit about Daniel Sprong yesterday, but Jesse Puljujarvi is an even bigger head-scratcher. At one point, he was rated higher than Matthews and Laine. It just hasn't clicked in the NHL yet. Everybody likes this kid. And the Oilers need him to succeed.

The Athletic's coverage of the Oilers is pretty excellent. It's actually so good that it hurts my enjoyment of the team, because it helps me understand just how dire things are.

Recent headlines:

Ken Hitchcock's 'to do' list of miracles a long one involving 30 percent of Oilers' roster

Finding Ken Hitchcock's Oilers' more productive wingers: Hard target search

Oilers need a first-shot scoring winger, and Ryan Spooner isn't it. So what's next?

Can Ken Hitchcock save Milan Lucic's career?

What can the Oilers do with Lucic? Seriously. Like, what the fuck? WHAT?! Do you have any ideas, Mr. Internet Tough Guy? Yeah, I didn't think so.

How great is The Athletic? Just finished the Scott Wheeler piece about Marco Rossi's billet family. Not earthshattering, but just really good, as is nearly all of their stuff. I'm really high on all things Athletic, excited about Dmitri Filipovic's move to ESPN (and potential partnering in some fashion with Wyshynski), and the Total Soccer Show podcast.

Yeah, he's probably going to hold this against me. He's not emotionally invested, tho, so he can check out at any time. I'm locked in, unfortunately.

On the bright side, my mother sent me an email a few minutes ago because she needed help downloading the new Michelle Obama book onto her Kindle. This is a positive development, right?

I'm a fan. I read the Oilers and Pens coverage, then just kind of click around and skim the rest. There's always something worth reading, and it's helped me to break my Deadpsin habit, which is a very good thing. I enjoy spending money if it supports good writing that isn't click-baity.

So, like, by definition, every team has a #1 defenseman. I don't know if Oskar Klefbom would be that guy on a lot of other teams, but I like him. (Almost 31 minutes on ice tonight.) And I really like that goal he scored in the final minute of regulation. They stole a couple of points after a pretty nothing kind of game.

Minnesota on Friday. Keep it going.

Blackhawks/Ducks on now. Strome and DeBrincat, entertain me.

Ha! As I typed this, Daniel Sprong scored for Anaheim! Perfect.

I like him too, the bit I've watched and what I've read. It seems like the have the middle core of that D with him and Larsson and Nurse but need someone at the top.

Þ Evan Bouchard, their most recent first-round pick, is supposed to be that guy eventually. There's a lot of hype around him. That's still a few years off, tho. He's only 19 and still in the OHL. He scored 87 points in 67 games for London last year.

They have a couple of decent prospects in the AHL, too. Their defense might actually be kind of good in a couple of years.

Þ So, Jonathan Willis, one of the very good Oilers writers at The Athletic, just posted this: 'Like Rome in its war with Hannibal, Edmonton needs a Scipio Africanus.' What follows is about 8,000 words drawing parallels with the Oilers and Peter Chiarelli and ineffective Roman generals. Or something. It's insane. Well, I'm assuming that it is because I'm not going to read it.

That's where we are now. In trying to find historical comparisons of ineptitude, we have to go back to the Punic Wars, apparently.

Oilers just put Rattie and Spooner on waivers.

Draft pick acquired from Pronger trade -> Jordan Eberle -> Ryan Strome -> Ryan Spooner -> waivers

Chiarelli has to be gone at the end of the season, doesn't he? He has been a disaster in Edmonton. Considering all the really high draft choices they've had, kind of amazing that they've only made the playoffs once in recent memory, and probably won't this season.

Oilers have re-signed Koskinen (3 yrs, $4.5 mil AAV)

back into cap hell.

I hate this team.

I'm not entirely down on the Koskinen signing. They didn't have a goalie signed beyond this season, and he's been better than Talbot. Yeah, that's a lot of money to give to a 30-year-old with a 27-game sample size, but they would have had to overpay somebody next summer anyway. (I'll probably end up deleting this post in a year so that there's no record of it.)

But man, it's just everything else. The Eberle to Strome to Spooner to waivers train is ridiculous. As has been pointed out a lot lately, Chiarelli is like the red paperclip guy in reverse.

The Brandon Manning trade happened since the last time we talked, right? Chia traded a somewhat-useful winger (and McDavid's best friend on the team) for a guy who had been a healthy scratch and who is owed $2.5M next season. Oh, and it's the same guy who broke McDavid's collarbone a couple of years ago. And then he went to Edmonton and was a healthy scratch.

And there was that ominous report that the team is making 'a full court press' to improve their forward depth. Chia might make a big trade soon. I'm nervous.

But why the heck does this deal get signed today!? This makes no sense! Forget the insanely inflated salary, why is it being signed in January? This isn't Erik Karlsson. Are they afraid he will get better? Are they afraid teams will outbid them? They could make this deal anytime.

I'm not going to defend Chiarelli. It's like trying to explain the weather. It just happens.

The most troubling news yesterday: McDavid cut his hair. No more McFlow.

Well, to the surprise of nobody, the axe finally fell on Chiarelli, and Deadspin had a good eulogy for his term as Oilers' GM.
