That's a very good book, amazing thing is he went upriver the whole way.

Has someone ever done that with the Mississippi? Travel it's entire length and recount what historical events happened at which locations (ie, when a particular area was discovered)?

Undaunted Courage sort of does, though it's only from St. Louis up.

I don't know if we've talked about Startup here (too lazy to check), but that company was started by a guy from This American Life and chronicled getting his podcast incubating company off the ground. Their first acquisition was a WNYC-based podcast called Reply All, which is excellent.

They also recently launched "Mystery Show" from yet another TAL reporter/producer named Starlee Kine... It is another amazing show.

I really like where things are going in this genre. I'm truly getting to the point where I can't find time to listen to all of the amazing shows out there.

I don't have much good to say about our president. But I applaud his dropping a 'nigger' in public.

If he dropped a 'niggas' I would be overjoyed, but in a different way.

ETA: I am surprised Obama showed up at Maron's house, I assumed he would do the show by phone.

ETAA: but ten minutes in, same ol. What a fucking liar he is.

This may have been the best discovery of 2014 for me. I loves the jokes segment, his running bits about being fat and his Holocaust survivor doctor, and so much more. At first I was picking and choosing based on who he interviewed but it doesn't even matter.
This thread getting bumped led to me downloading them all. So, so good.

Planet Money is usually pretty good (except when that woman Zoe with the worst voice I have ever heard is hosting).

Just listened to a great episode about Greece. Personal stories and a solid explanation of some of the issues the country faces.

http://www.npr.org/sections/money/2015/ ... rom-greece

One crazy fact I learned: In order to protect Greek's dairies (a cartel) from the importation of fresh milk from the rest of Europe, there's a law that says all milk sold in Greece has to be stamped with a best before date no longer than a week after production. As a result, European dairies don't bother shipping to Greece because by the time it would hit the store shelves, it would only be a day or two from its official expiration.

This is mostly for Brian's FYI, but I just read Mike Tenay is launching a podcast on CBS Radio called "Professor Vegas". The podcast will be about sports gambling and will include interviews with bookies, those who make the point spreads and "other personalities from the Las Vegas sports betting scene."

Yeah, I already knew about it from Mike but was going to mention it here in case anyone else is interested. He's told me some of the guys he has lined up and it should be awesome. If you have any interest in sports betting, it should be great. And best of all, it's not going to be assumed that you're a sports betting expert, so it's going to be accessible. First show is going to be a discussion (in part) about key numbers in football, which is sports betting 101, but he's got a great angle on it even for those of us who know about it.

ETA: This deal on the podcast has been like 8 months in the making. It's amazing to me how much work and legal stuff and whatnot goes into just launching a podcast like this with semi-national backing.

One final thing and probably most importantly is he has a "no tout" policy for this. One of the problems with any discussion of sports betting is the scumbags who sell picks. This is going to be more of an opportunity to learn about how sports betting works from professional sports betters, the people at the casinos who set lines and work on the front lines and other people who work in the industry. Not a debate on why Cleveland is +4 instead of +3 for a given week or crap like that.

One other interesting thing about Mike is that he's probably one of the foremost experts on NHL betting in the country. Not that there's many guys who specialize in it like there is in football, but I doubt there's more than a couple dozen or so guys who are as good at it as him. I always tease him that he should only bet on the NHL, but it's fun to bet on football so who can blame him. So if you're a hockey fan as well, should be lots of good stuff in there in future weeks especially once NHL season kicks off.

Any word on if Tenay's podcast will end up on iTunes?

iTunes generally won't list it in advance. I forget what upcoming podcast that I was looking for recently when I found that out, but podcasts don't exist to them until they actually exist.

Speaking of podcasts....has anyone else completely given up on the Grantland Podcasts? I'm sure I'll resubscribe for the NFL ones with Mays and Barnwell, but the rest of them are inane...how many NBA podcasts does there need to be in the off season, and I don't care about boxing, and I REALLY don't care about wrestling. Jonah Keri's is ok, but I'm not as into Baseball as I once was.

And then the Pop Culture ones? I guess since I'm not watching any of the TV shows that get discussed, or any of the movies, I'm not interested.

I like Zach Lowe's. I'd listen to Jonah Keri's if I still followed baseball as closely as I used to. The NFL one with Barnwell/Mays is pretty good but you have to get used to their idiosyncrasies. I'll listen to the Game of Thrones segments of the TV podcasts when it's in season, but beyond that I don't touch their pop culture stuff.

I love me some Barnwell, ever since is Football Outsiders days, but an hour three times a week? That's a pretty significant time commitment. Is it worth it? I still have about 190 Stuff You Missed in History class episodes I've been working backwards on transit since starting in November 2013.

I listened to one of Jonah Keri's shows recently...because of his "My Team Is a Joke" (where comedians come on and talk about their teams...this one was with Geoff Tate), and listening to the other guest (some beat writer from somewhere) I realized I had no idea who 90% of the players they were talking about were.

Nice write up about the Men in Blazers, and their upcoming "Blazer-con"
The two hosts of “Men in Blazers,” a scrappy soccer-analysis show on the NBC Sports Network, wave handmade signs on the air and broadcast from a room so cramped that guests have to sit behind the duo like children in the back seat of their parents’ car.

But behind all the low-tech trappings, the Men in Blazers are a valuable brand. The TV show and podcast have emerged as a conduit for soccer’s top teams, corporate sponsors and the sport’s growing legion of American fans, much to the exuberance of the show’s England-born, New York-based hosts and creators, Roger Bennett and Michael Davies.

“I’m enjoying their success,” says Richard Scudamore, chief executive of England’s Premier League, the high-profile home to clubs such as Arsenal and Manchester United. Like “Men in Blazers,” Premier League games air on NBC Sports, which recently beat out rival networks to extend broadcast rights to the league for another six years in a deal estimated at close to $1 billion. Though “Men in Blazers” is zealous in its coverage of other bodies, including the U.S. men’s and women’s national teams, the Premier League is the show’s North Star. Mr. Bennett recently compared the league’s season opening to “Christmas Day, Rosh Hashana, Churchill’s Day and Secretary’s Day crushed into one.”

On Grantland's podcasts, I'll listen to Jalen & Jacoby and maybe Hollywood Prospectus. Other than that, no. Reality tv does nothing for me. And I'm pretty sure that 2 or 3 of any of us can do a better podcast job than any podcast they throw out.

It's not around anymore, but Girls In Hoodies was the worst shit ever.
