Rain just started here. Kid's school let out early and surrounding counties cancelled the whole day. Pretty sure it's the same line of storms that were in Giffland a day or two ago.

A lot of people like to quote windchills as an exaggeration of the temperature, which is a peeve of my pedantic self. "It was minus FORTY!". No it wasn't. It was -29 and windy.

But it will actually be -40 which is extreme, even for around here
I'm the opposite. Who cares about the actual temperature? I care about what it actually feels like, especially if it's going to feel like -40!
It's not always windy all the time, I can stand against a building. But the temp is basically the warmest it can possibly be.

Well, this has turned out worse than I could have imagined. Spent the entire flight getting panicked updates from my wife, and just sitting on the plane not being able to help. Wet vac died, but fortunately a neighbor and a friend brought two more and two sump pumps. Apparently, the entire garage was filled 3 inches high despite 6 people and 2 vacs clearing it out. Then it started coming through the bathroom wall, and now it's coming through the sliding door. My wife is vacumuing the bathroom while my son gets the door, but she said it's coming in faster than they can vacuum. Rain expected to continue past 3:00 am. At least there is a delayed opening at school. Not sure how long she will let him stay up. Absolutely killing me being stuck 3000 miles away and not being able to do anything.

ETA: Now it is seeping through the garage wall into the other side of the house. Fucking super.

I just feel bad for my wife. We are just lucky we added a shower on that room so she can dump the water. No way she could have lifted it into the sink. Now she is running back and forth between rooms on either side of the garage. I'm afraid to tell her to check the basement.

I know you've probably said this previously, but is this all groundwater? How is your yard sloped?

I still have PTSD from all the times my basement flooded and I had to stay up all night with wet vacs, so I totally can relate. it's terrible.

Yeah when it feels like 110 here I don't care that it's "only" like 92 degrees.

That's awful, Syb. My parents had a less-bad version of that happen last year but sounds like it pales in comparison to your situation. Hope it turns out for the best under the circumstances.

Man that sucks Syb, hope the rain ends soon!

We had snow here Monday, melted away yesterday, now it's in the 30s but we have crazy as F winds (gusts up to ~50 mph) that make it seem cold and then down to the teens this weekend.

Fucking hell Syb. I suggest you tear it all down and just rebuild. Or move. Nothing worse that flood damage that happens every time a storm rolls through. Hang in there, 3000 miles away.

Looks like the wife saved out guest room, but the mudroom carpet is soaked and probably water under the steps. Not sure if I need a remediation company for that, or just replace the rug and hope the water evaporates. Wife is deadset on selling the house now, as the patio guy said there is nothing else we can do to mitigate future damage.

The backyard is on a slight slope towards the back of the house. The house is weird, kind of built sideways with the patio off the back corner of the house. Tons of underground water runs off the backyard, across the patio and towards the driveway. Patio guy has made numerous attempts to mitigate, patched a hole in the foundation and tarred the foundation where water first came in. Then but a drain in the patio in front of the sliding door after the water on the patio was high enough to get in through the door. He put in a sump pump in the backyard where the underground water was the worst, and that pumps out to the opposite side of the house. We need a new driveway anyways, so I want to see if they can pitch the driveway away from the garage, and run some drains from the patio out towards the street.

I feel EXTREMELY lucky that our basement doesn't flood. My adjacent neighbor has a sump pump and he put in a whole new drainage system with a series of french drains and stuff when he moved in.

When I first moved in, I kind of did the same just not as extensive. But, the fact of the matter is that when we put in a new patio and regraded away from our house, we saved thousands on flooding issues. There's basically a flash creek that runs down the entire width of my yard when it rains, but the grading pushes it all over to my neighbors drainage system so all is well.

Calgary didn't hit -30C at all in 2023 and today and tomorrow, the HIGH is -30. Calgary hasn't seen a high of -30 in 17 years.

We have a snow plow map.

https://maps.calgary.ca/RoadConditions/

The snowplow names are pretty funny

Brinestone Plowboy
Princess Sleigha
My Fair Bladey
Darth Blader
Oh Snow You Didn't
Fast & The Flurrious
Bonhomme Deneige
Bob

Did they bring in the writers of "Bob's Burgers" to name them? That is hilarious.

The wind is brutal right now and wouldn't be surprised if our fence takes a tumble before it's supposed to let up around 4. We'll have lows in the 10s next week.

Happy our friends left us the portable sump pump, and gll look as I didn’t trust my wife when she said it was set up. So far it’s light, no water streaming from the back yard. Forecast looking like itll stay moderate and not heavy. Winds sound nasty though
