Saw Destroyer and Father John Misty last night at Beacon Theater. Confirmed that Bejar just isn't my thing and that Tillman is a really solid performer, but in a disconnected way. Sound was really great there. Crowd was weird even for an indie show, we settled on "largest gathering of men over 6'3 but none has ever dunked a basketball".

I've seen a # of shows at the Beacon. Probably a top 5 venue of mine. Acoustics are fantastic.mister d wrote: Thu Feb 27, 2025 3:48 pm Saw Destroyer and Father John Misty last night at Beacon Theater. I was listening to the show in the link above and thought "some of this doesn't sound right" and that's because its Tuesdays show in Brooklyn and not last night's. So ... ok.

Booked my 2 Phish shows for the summer in Philly at The Mann. Great venue if you've never been.

jk homie. I've never seen them in a non-festival setting and would go, but they seem to never come to Houston.

I think I’ll be spending my 50th in AC seeing America with the oldest, who sent me a “take me to this please” message last week. It was either that, drive to Reading PA the following day, or say no.

Lots of people trying to make me feel old today but you’re the first to hit that exact note.

Perfect setting to make yourself feel young again.
To quote both Bruce Prichard and Tony Schiavone, "Fuck Duff Meltzer."
Re: The Live Music thread...
It wasn’t until after the show that we finally saw someone who might have been around the same age as my oldest (19). We were grabbing a bite to eat downstairs but was wearing a tour t-shirt so we’re pretty sure he went.
Also only saw one MAGA hat. He ended up in our section but no where near us.
Show was fun, only about 90 minutes or so. Dewey Bunnell is the only founding member still touring.

Took L-Jam4 to his first concert (it was supposed to be Green Day last summer at HersheyPark but Billie Joe blew out his voice the night before) Saturday night to see Beth Gibbons, formerly of Portishead, and opener Cass McCombs at the Met in Philly. It was first time in the venue. Good seats. Made sure to teach him that if you enjoy an artist to go see them live and especially buy swag, because that’s how they get paid.
She mostly did tracks from her solo album, with a couple classics here and there. My son was going screaming and cheering because there was a great energy. And for the encore… once the first few notes of Roads the whole place full of Gen Xers holding onto their youth went bonkers. Great experience.

My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Tied with Mel Ott at Number 25 is Miguel Cabrera at 511.
Re: The Live Music thread...
Went to see Saint Motel at Mission Ballroom down in Denver (my new favorite venue). A short set (they played for ~1:20) but one of the most "fun" shows I've been too. Every song upbeat and the entire crowd looking/acting like they are having a good time.
Fun fact...the opener was a indie/folk trio called Oliver Hazard. I had heard of them because they are from near where I grew up in Ohio and are named after War of 1812 Navy officer Oliver Hazard Perry. Out of 3500ish people in attendance I am probably one of only about three other people who actually knew who that was.

Re: The Live Music thread...
Bought a ticket yesterday to see Bob Mould (with Craig Finn from The Hold Steady opening) at a small theater pretty close to my house.
The price was very reasonable ($30)...and the Ticketmaster fees were almost half of the ticket price ($14). That's nuts.

Re: The Live Music thread...
Was there an upgrade option where Craig Finn wouldn't be there ha ha ha just playin' Giff.
I saw Bob at what I assume is a very similar venue just before the pandemic. Just him on the stage with some speakers and his guitar, minimal chatter and just blasted through like two dozen songs in 75 minutes. Worth seeing once but made me really wish I'd gotten to see him with Husker Du or Sugar.

Bob is one of the acts I've seen the most...in lots of different configurations (with Sugar, solo electric, solo acoustic, and now with his new band)...and he's always great.mister d wrote: Wed Apr 02, 2025 9:50 am I saw Bob at what I assume is a very similar venue just before the pandemic. I was going to skip out this time, but his new album is fantastic, and his appearance on the Distraction podcast last week was great.

Saw Trey Anastasio solo at the Warner Theatre in DC on Friday. Him and an acoustic for 75% of the show. Joined by a his co-creator on piano for the end of the show.
Very cool way to hear songs I love. Intimate venue. Cool stuff.
Fuck off Giff. I’m sharing.

Feels like "and the show will be acoustic" is the greatest test of whether you really, really like an artist.

Re: The Live Music thread...
I am four days from my drive to Savannah for two Billy Strings shows there - this Friday and Saturday night. His second set into the encore from night 3 of this St. Augustine run this past weekend may have been the best combo/set I've heard from them. Kinda bummed that just happened - he burned a lot of songs I was hoping to catch - hopefully he dips back into the well on a few of them for this weekend.

Re: The Live Music thread...
Yeah, I am absolutely pumped. Gonna hit the road around 6 am Friday and just drop south on 95 all day until the left turn to get go the last 20 miles or so into Savannah. Have 15 hours of live concert songs set up in 3 playlists from Strings - just gonna take my time and let the sun pour in.
ETA - they returned to their unreal live version of Nutshell (cover of the Alice in Chains classic) for the opener of the encore Saturday and it is was so fucking good. They then drifted into an absolute fire-anger Wargasm to close.
Here is a good look at that version from New Orleans a few years ago -

Agreed. I was low-key pumped my daughter's dance competition was on the Friday night of March Madness so I could drive solo to Louisiana.

What's funny is that it works for 75, too, pretty much. Take a left turn in Macon and it's a straight shot. Yeah, in my head, 75/95 are interchangeable - even though...they are not.Nonlinear FC wrote: Mon Apr 07, 2025 11:48 amWhat's funny is that it works for 75, too, pretty much. You can get from Wilmington, DE to Chapel Hill, NC on one tank of gas down 95 in a ~2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but everyone in the car has to be committed to possibly risking running out.
