Didn't Charlie Jones make a similar mistake in the '88 games?

Ah yes...found this:
Jones announced the winner of the men's 800 meters as Nixon Kiprotich of Kenya, when actually it was another Kenyan, Paul Ereng. Kiprotich finished eighth.

You gonna play three on the back line, that's gonna happen. Solo had none chance.

Live on NBCSN as well. Watched first half over lunch break, US missed a great chance right before half - guessing that is now coming back to bite them based on reactions on here.

Swedes has a lightning one-man counterattack. Girl got the lead pass at midfield, with a step on two defenders, and had the speed to outrun them on the dribble, straight to the box, an easy 15 yard shot into the corner.

American gals getting plenty of chances, like the first half. Just a matter of time. Megan coming on for O'Hara.

What a run by Dunn! That was lucky for Sweden (good hustle too)

Even though they've pulled Tobin back to defense, she is determined to create a chance.

This was a good game. Was Carli Lloyd called offside or was she whistled for a foul on her header into the net?

ETA: Brazil has been metric for over 200 years, it would be pretty weird if they measured the track in yards. American contractor, maybe, but we don't even use yards for high school track anymore. An American football contractor?
I agree that using yards seems implausible. But if the track is regulation length then today's race has gotta be one of the all-time outlier events in sports history. If it were just the winner who had an insane time -- and breaking a WR that hasn't been approached in years by 14 seconds is nuts -- it would be one thing. But basically everyone in the race ran the race of her life. And it was 85% humidity in Rio, which is not ideal for running a blazing time.

It looked like a faoul to me in real time, and the replay pretty clearly showed her dragging the woman down.

I like the theory that the track is mismeasured. I don't like the theory that they used yards instead of meters. Unless NASA/JPL subcontracted the job.

He was not dog-paddling on the side of the pool, behind the glass. Which would've been an improvement. Al Roker was offering actual cogent commentary.

NBC totally whiffed on the most exciting (and controversial) event of the night. I'm kind of looking forward to them going back to their comfort zone in Tokyo.

I watched the highlights on the NBC Sports iPad app. The announcers were British, so I assume not part of NBC's TV team, but they were right on top of the controversy. I'm not sure if NBC's TV coverage showed this, but the final jumper's hand brushed the sand, which is why his jump was (correctly) scored as much shorter than it initially appeared.
