Picked up a copy of Flamme Rouge from the library today. Played a quick game with my son. Simple to pick up but cool strategy. Could see myself buying this. Much like Camel Cup it is quick, all ages, but enough to draw me for frequent playing.

It's an awesome gateway game. There are lots of versions and even legacy variants. First type of cooperative game I've played. Its basically the quintessential game of that type.

It does have its moments. Some games come down to the final flip and others can end after a turn. What I've found is that 3 people playing have much better odds of winning than 4.
By starting off with 3 cards each and then flipping 2, you could possibly have the 5 cards needed to cure a disease after your first turn. Also, the deck you flip cards from runs out slower.
I wish I bought the game while deployed so I could post a photo like Keith Law:

I played Carcassonne with my fiance and her family when I went to visit them a while back. I like tile laying games, but I just couldn't get into that one despite its high acclaim amongst gamers.

We'd been doing a Yahtzee tournament at distance for the past week with my sister, her family and my parents. My 6 year old got a Yahtzee 5 nights in a row, and won the competition.
Broke out Azul last night. Pretty game, and I enjoyed the gameplay as well.

I love me some Carcassonne. My daughters enjoy it also. Maybe we break that out tonight. Or possibly Ticket to Ride. Got Above and Below for Christmas we haven't played yet. Should get that one out also.

It's the same thing with the 2 player game Patchwork. I definitely like polyomino (Tetris piece) games. But I just couldn't get into that one either. And I played 3 games consecutively the first time I tried it to be very sure I don't have to play it again. (Sometimes games are better on the 2nd or 3rd try.)

We tried that too but my wife only wanted to play with the expansion pack, “Away”.

What would you guys recommend for a safe online gaming room for a group of students? I signed up for chesskids.com, which I'm figuring out, but looking for more. I'm hoping to find something that has a wide variety of games (challenging strategy games to silly social stuff) with hopefully a chatting element too. For example it would be great to have a teacher play a game of online uno with several students while chatting with them.

I've heard about BoardGameArena and Tabletop Simulator. I haven't personally used them, but lots of people swear by them on the board games subreddit.

My son and I played a variant where instead of holding one tile, we held a hand of three tiles. So when your turn came, you played one of the tiles and then drew to replace it. We enjoyed that more.

Seems like I remember there being an app, but I could be wrong.
The six year old and I just played Kingdom Builder for the first time. The gameplay was hard to understand, just reading it, but not at all hard once we began playing. I made the mistake of thinking we had to keep score after every turn, and not at the end of the game. Once I got past that, it was easier to play. We really liked it.

1) I'm kinda bummed no one laughed at my "Go" joke.
2) If you're looking for tablet games, Catan has an excellent port. Some others I'd recommend are Lords of Waterdeep (A DnD themed worker placement game. Very fun, you can pass and play. The theme is heavy but means nothing to the game. MrsBSF plays it with me and doesn't know shit about DnD nor does she care to and still enjoys it). Agricola, a VERY HEAVY worker placement/seasonal farming/crazy heavy cool game. This game is totally worth it but will take time to learn and figure out the nuances to. Tokaido, currently free in iOS store I think, is a neat mix of worker placement and set collecting. Very relaxing to play.

Once we got into Above and Below, we really enjoyed it. Took some time to get it all set up and understand the different actions. And glad to see Takaido. The game is so good. Haven't played the mobile version though, it had some really poor reviews and it was pay-to-play at the time.

Carcassonne is awesome. I feel it is my duty to recommend the original iOS version (by The Coding Monkeys) while it is still available. It’s really excellent. They lost the license and it was supposed to be taken off the App Store on March 1, but I still see it on for now. The new version will probably be good too but I’ll stick with the bird in hand.
