I feel compelled to add that if there was no rift and Gallant still had the support of the players, then this move is inexcusable. They are three points out of first place. This is at best a parallel move as far as what to expect for final results. If this team is going to start behaving with the worst aspects of Steinbrenner in late 70s-80s, continued ardent fandom will be difficult.

But they're also sitting outside of the playoffs. West is tight.

It's definitely an all or nothing kind of move. If it fails, they're definitely pissing off a huge chunk of the fanbase. If it works, all is forgiven like any other market.

ETA: I wouldn't say I agree with the move in general but I appreciate the impulse to swing for the fences. I've not rooted for a lot of teams that would make a big balls move like this.

It'd be really awesome if NHL coaches dressed like the players like baseball managers do.

Every article in a Detroit paper about the firing mentions that Gallant and Yzerman were linemates and are still very good friends.

And it might just be fan speculation, but a lot of NYR twitter is wondering if they'd try to go really big and pair Georgiev with DeAngelo. He's only signed a one year deal and his points numbers will get him serious paid. Even if they wouldn't, they have Trouba long term and Fox as a better all around player, so DeAngelo would be a very highly paid 3RD / PP specialist. Probably untenable in the cap era. Also, he's a piece of shit.

San Jose seems like a team that would be an obvious fit for a young goalie with a couple of RFA years left. They could dump Dell and go with Jones/Georgiev (or vice/versa more likely) until it gets cheaper to buyout Jones (or until his play improves). Not sure what they have to offer though.

Ovi has been on fire the last few games. And where he is in his career you just keep seeing milestones, crazy stats, and folks he passes on stat lists.

But the one I read today on RMNB,
Hat Tricks Since 2005-06
Alex Ovechkin ....... 26
Avalanche ............... 24
Wild .......................... 19
Devils ....................... 19
Golden Knights .... 4

Plus Ovi moved ahead of Mario and tied Stevie Y

I never thought anyone could touch Gretzky’s goals record but he could do it. It might be a part of another team though.

Yeah, he basically needs to average abt 40 goals a year for 5 years running. So, yeah, even if he hits a wall in 3 years, you'd think he could stretch out his career for another 4 or 5 years to take the record.

It's pretty remarkable to behold. Like you said LVbri, I never thought anyone would come close to Gretzky, not just bc the game has changed so much, but really because what he did was truly astounding at the time.

But Ovi really does keep playing at this level. Gretzky will always be the greatest because of his assist markers. But we are seeing a once in a generation player.

The hockey top 5 has always been Gretzky, Orr, Howe, Lemieux and Richard.

Do Crosby and Ovechkin pass these guys?

I'm not the hockey guy a lot of you are, but I would have thought Crosby would be closer to that elite list where Ovechkin would be in "greatest scorer" conversations.

I'm really interested in seeing how Sid vs Mario plays out in Pittsburgh. It's going to be hard to beat "bought and saved the franchise" in his post-playing career, but if he keeps playing at his current level for a couple of years, maybe wins another Cup, the on-ice argument could be interesting. Maybe if he also decides to stick around in Pittsburgh after he retires...

The all star game was fun. Hertl should have won MVP. Pacioretty was a defenseman and two Flames and two Oilers hugging at the end was really weird.

Gretzky is great and Ovi is a great scorer, but Ovi is also a bigger physical presence/forechecker than #99. Nowhere near the passer.

Forwards play some defense in Vegas, unlike Calgary, Edmonton and San Jose.

Gretzky had so many assists he’s almost lapped the field. Crosby is sub-Gretzky, but his era-adjusted type.

Las Vegas’ AHL team is moving to...Las Vegas. Reportedly as soon as next season.

They’ll play in the 8500-seat Orleans Arena.

It should have been. Flames were coming off playing the Blues the night before as well. Slam dunk.

VGK purchase the AHL San Antonio Rampage and will move the team to Las Vegas for the 2020-21 season. They'll play two years at the Orleans Arena while an arena is being built in Henderson. The AHL team will train at the arena in Henderson, while the NHL team will continue to train at their arena in Summerlin. Expected team name is Henderson Silver Knights.

Weird. I was just in San Antonio. I saw someone wearing a Rampage shirt and thought to myself how much I'd love any kind of professional hockey in Houston.

Could just double post the above since the Pens don’t make this trade if Guentzel is healthy.

UFA or not, the price on Kreider probably just went up, so you’re welcome NYR fans.
