This has never crossed my mind because I'm not in the Army, but I never realized a large amount of Army posts are named for confederate soldiers.
They released this statement:
They released this statement:
Time magazine disagrees and apparently wants to drive the point home with a sledgehammer.“Every Army installation is named for a soldier who holds a place in our military history. Accordingly, these historic names represent individuals, not causes or ideologies. It should be noted that the naming occurred in the spirit of reconciliation, not division.”

Honestly not going to get too worked up over it, but it's pretty fucking dumb to have Army bases named after confederate soldiers in my opinion. Hundreds of thousands were lost in a war against those fuckers. Seems like naming (or re-naming) some Air Force base bin Laden AFB.

On the fourth I saw one like this -- the American flag was on the other side -- on the road not far from the town in Michigan which was reputed to have an active Klan organization not too long ago. I might enjoy, from a safe distance, watching those boys display their convictions by rolling through Detroit too. Perhaps they were on their way there.DSafetyGuy wrote:Twice this week, I have seen a pick-up truck in my town with a confederate flag mounted on the bed.Shirley wrote:Bubba a gonna make some enemies with that decision.

Came across this on Facebook - several states' declarations of causes for ceceding.
http://www.civilwar.org/education/histo ... auses.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And it's straight from civilwar.org, not some liberal rag.
There are five in there, and four of the five explicitly list slavery as the first reason. Only Virginia is a bit more vague, merely referring to "Oppression of the Southern Slaveholding States."
A pretty handy resource when you find yourself arguing (pro tip - don't) with someone who claims the Civil War wasn't about slavery.
Georgia's first sentence:

The people of Georgia having dissolved their political connection with the Government of the United States of America, present to their confederates and the world the causes which have led to the separation. This is one of several realities that make any expectation that tweaking the system will affect change just another example of feel-good magical thinking that dooms us to more of the status quo.Our national conversation on race and crime is based on a fiction. It is the fiction that the organs of internal security, especially the judiciary and the police, can be adjusted, modernized or professionalized to make possible a post-racial America. We discuss issues of race while ignoring the economic, bureaucratic and political systems of exploitation—all of it legal and built into the ruling apparatus—that are the true engines of racism and white supremacy. No discussion of race is possible without a discussion of capitalism and class. And until that discussion takes place, despite all the proposed reforms to the criminal justice system, the state will continue to murder and imprison poor people of color with impunity.
More training, body cameras, community policing, the hiring of more minorities as police officers, a better probation service and more equitable fines will not blunt the indiscriminate use of lethal force or reduce the mass incarceration that destroys the lives of the poor.

Re: Racism
I'm generally in strong agreement. But two caveats:
- The direct financial cost of prisons may someday become better known, and a deterrent to some of the absurdly long sentences that are handed out (and legislated).
- Body cameras have considerable potential to reign in at least the least-subtle police offenses. But it won't be easy. There will be major issue over control of the resulting video. Ironically, people concerned with civil liberties and privacy (e.g., ACLU) may be a restraining force as to both cameras and release of video.

Re: Racism
That is not ironic at all. The last fucking thing I want is every cop having a camera to scan crowds or people in virtually any situation you can think of, the images being fed into a facial recognition database, and all kinds of hijinks ensuing. Another step in the complete surveillance society.
For the near term at least, the potential for benefit will be very simply circumvented. The cops will turn it off/cover the lens when they are gonna break the law or act like an asshole.
Body cameras sound great until you think about it for more than two minutes.

You're probably right, but I've been on the body camera thing for several years and thought it would be a useful deterrent.
How about this -- since The Man will already have cameras on the scene (stationary like London, drones, hidden in FBI 'food trucks'), the body cameras will give them no incremental information.
We pass a constitutional amendment requiring that the video feeds are run through a server that Glen Greenwald operates from an undisclosed icy lair in Greenland, and we're all set. As a back-up, the feed also is sent to some randomly selected (every 10 minutes) teen in New Jersey, who can be counted on to share it in inappropriate ways instead of doing his homework or something to help out around the house, godddamit.
Technology can pretty much solve all of society's problems. I think I'm getting it now.

In the heavily policed ghettos, cops wearing cameras will happen before ubiquitous video coverage like in London, I am guessing. Cheaper, it will take a few more years for the build out of a London-type system.DC47 wrote:How about this -- since The Man will already have cameras on the scene (stationary like London, drones, hidden in FBI 'food trucks'), the body cameras will give them no incremental information.

Re: Racism
I can't find the video but just heard the clip on the radio. On PTI last night, Whitlock said that Serena has beaten Sharapova 17 straight times because let's face it...Sharapova is white. The black person will always have that extra incentive to beat the white person because of...you know. He then said that Ray Lewis used to talk about this and it's the reason that the black Ravens did so well against Tom Brady and the white Patriots.
And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be soaked with blood, and their dust made fat with fatness. - God
Re: Racism
It is refreshing to hear a black person (besides me) admit that black people are racist too. Although it is really fucking stupid (I know, a given) for him to speak for Serena and her motivations. This reveals Jason's racism (and perhaps Ray Lewis' if Whitlock's attribution is accurate), not Serena's.

Really? Why does he have to make it a black and white issue? Why doesn't Sloane Stephens or Madison Keys beat people? Serena's beaten everyone this year, she's 40-1 (only lost on clay in Madrid to Petkovic). Women's tennis is in super decline. Sharapova is probably the best of a mediocre group of mindless ball-bashers. It's amazing to me how she beat anyone double faulting 10 times per match. Serena doesn't put up with that shit and beats her easily everytime.Jerloma wrote:I can't find the video but just heard the clip on the radio.
