man i've really developed a hatred for this league
This past summer I consciously decided to take a big step back from following NHL hockey. The cowardly caving to homophobia was probably the final straw, but certainly not the only straw. Then add all that corporate shittery with what looked like the beginning of a long and depressing Jets swoon, and I had no interest at all coming in to the year.

So of course the Jets unexpectedly re-sign Scheifele and Hellebyuck and go on to be likeable and good and suck me back in nightly.

Still don't regret dropping all the hockey twitter follows and a half dozen podcasts though. The league (and sport, really) has dug its own grave in my books.

That should and actually could be 10+. That’s back from the Matt Cooke era.

Can’t even argue he was trying to make a play on the puck/player. Should be at least 10

Just horrible. I’ll be pissed if they go easy on him “because he doesn’t have a history of this sort of behavior.”

don't want to drag this down on all the reasons although the ones you hit upon are obviously on the list - yours is a completely understandable reaction; e.g. i'd be hypocritical/lying if i thought i wouldn't be deep in it if the Sabres were in a playoff spot. honestly trav keeping an eye on the shockingly-fantastic season the Jets are having is one of the few threads I have followed this year.

On that note ... the circle of moves Winnipeg has made in the Patrick Laine chain of events is staggering - if you'd have thrown out these names just 3-4 years ago you'd never suspect how much they won all of these deals - impressive.

would be nice to see one of these powerhouse canadian teams at least make it to the finals this year; 15 straight for the Oil! (sorry degen); more riots in my old city of Vancouver! (...ok let's not). As a shit-throwing Sabres fan I would also sincerely love to have the Leafs finally make the finals - the only thing I can think that might move the management/ownership needle here is even *more* regional embarrassment.

I'm definitely closer to "hate the league, love the sport" than I am to turning it off. If they hadn't taken drastic steps to clean up the game (as evidenced by the Gallagher hit being a massive outlier and not a typical worst-hit-of-the-week) I might be further away.

see what happens when your team goes 13 years without a playoff appearance (oh that's right it has literally never happened before)

Yeah I have to find my way back in - i think it's time to get back to college hockey. Arguably the biggest BC vs BU matches in their regular-season history are tonight and tomorrow, I'm thinking I need to subscribe to ESPN+ for a week seeing as that's the only way to watch them...

JFC.

And Chytil went down again just skating with the scratches. No one seems to know exactly what happened although some reports are a leg injury, which I really hope it is no matter how bad. He's in the range of serious lifetime problems with concussions.

If the Rangers don’t get their act back together, they won’t even beat bottom feeders like San Jose…

Usually there’s the gray area of the open ice hit. This was just an elbow coming right behind one of the two important Canadian teams losing a guy to an elbowing suspension.

Well the Flames are garbage, they don't know what's going on most of the time.

This was a massive PR blunder. There were no legal grounds to cite mental health in the initial release. It's a horrible look, and the organization is now being subject to criticism and ridicule that it deserves.

I was going to say the same thing. It is such a disservice to claim it’s a mental health issue when it isn’t.

Especially when you have a guy Kylington, who was just off 20 months due to mental health reasons.

Another half-pregnant NHL thing. We want to spread the game globally but no developing teams in our tournament!

So Calgary traded Monahan and a 1st to Montreal just so they could take him.

Today, Montreal trades Monahan to Winnipeg FOR a 1st round pick.

Fucking Treliving.

There's a time and place for both, right? Wasn't the greatest thing in hockey history a 6-team tournament?

There really were only 6 countries back then that could roster a team and the world wasn't global like it is now. And the Canada Cup didn't pretend to be a global tournament, it was an invitational to make Alan Eagleson money.

So even though it created the greatest hockey and great memories, it was run by a crook. We are not in those times anymore.

The bigger news is that the NHL is going to the Olympics in 26 and 30. So why do we need a 4 team tournament in 25?

As soon as I read reverse hit I assumed it was going to be a shit move from Laf but … I don’t see it? Didn’t rise up, didn’t undercut and it wasn’t a case of slamming into an unsuspecting guy who is coming in for a board battle. Just really bad luck with the toe pick.

Laf seemed pretty broken up about it. Everyone did, really. Wasn’t long after that that Gustafsson took a puck to the face, and Kuch seemed more concerned about him than the play, for a second.

Yeah, it seemed like Laf and Trocheck both stopped playing pretty quick.
