Apparently they don't stop criming either as leaders of both Milan and Inter's ultra groups were arrested recently on some mafia shit. Torino going down to 10 men early was all it took to make this very much not a stereotypical boring Serie A defensive slugfest. Got to see a Marcus Thuram hat trick in person. Really glad I got to go, especially considering they may be tearing it down soonish.

I hope they make the world cup final against Germany and Tuchel puts David De Gea in at goal somehow for the penalty shootout.

Which is interesting, because he stopped 2 last week in Fiorentina's win over AC Milan. The controversy being that Pulisic is the designated PK taker and 2 other guys took the kicks and missed. Manager was hella pissed.A_B wrote: Wed Oct 16, 2024 1:59 pm I hope they make the world cup final against Germany and Tuchel puts David De Gea in at goal somehow for the penalty shootout.

I’m curious to see how Tuchel can get a Spaniard into the England side, but I guess that’s why you hire a German!A_B wrote: Wed Oct 16, 2024 1:59 pm I hope they make the world cup final against Germany and Tuchel puts David De Gea in at goal somehow for the penalty shootout.

Funny how the news of the clashes between Israeli and Dutch fans is reported differently by different news services. I don’t have a dog in this issue - I don’t know what to believe. Here are two different reports:

Ajax used to be the Jewish club (pre-WW2) although the current club really has no connection to that version.

I know nothing about college soccer but it seems...odd?...that the NCAA championship match is Vermont(!) vs. Marshall(!!).

While both programs have moved firmly into the Top 20 in the last 5 or 6 years (roughly), you are 100 percent correct that these programs don't have a storied, blue-blood history. Marshall won it all a few years back and Vermont has made a few decent runs the last 4 or 5 years.GoodKarma wrote: Mon Dec 16, 2024 8:40 pm I know nothing about college soccer but it seems...odd?...that the NCAA championship match is Vermont(!) vs. Marshall(!!).
Vermont, in particular, was a pretty average program. Both play in pretty out of the way conferences in terms of college soccer hierarchy.
It's also, for my money, one of the best mascot battles ever.
The Catamounts versus The Thundering Herd??
Elite.

My nephew is a Catamount. He is not on the soccer team. He is part of the Historical Fencing team (like fencing but more pirate and medieval) and Timber Sports team (log rolling, chopping, and such).

Re: All threads are temporary. This one's about soccer.
To your point about the final seeming random, the ACC is akin to the SEC in soccer, sending by far the most teams to the NCAAs every year. The Big East and B1G are 2a and 2b in the pecking order.
Both Marshall and Vermont remind me of the Akron Zips, in terms of a mid-major type program that hires a really good coach that builds something special. Though to be fair to that program, that happened back in the 80s and they have been consistently good for many decades.

I remember Akron being good 10-20 years ago…I didn’t realize they were good back in the 80’s. Also had no idea Marshall has won it all before.Nonlinear FC wrote: Mon Dec 16, 2024 8:59 pm To your point about the final seeming random, the ACC is akin to the SEC in soccer, sending by far the most teams to the NCAAs every year. Marshall was ranked 13, and Vermont was unseeded. In the semis, they beat to seed Ohio State and #3 Denver.

Those folks wouldn't like college hockey very much. Lots of guys that will probably have to slog through a professional career in Europe or in the 3rd level of minors here wait until they are in their early 20s to use their collegiate eligibility and play until they are 24-25.

Huge fan of the new goalie time wasting rule. But if they don't enforce it, who cares. Now if they can be a bit quicker on cards for wasting time on restarts (I like quick restarts after fouls).

Re: All threads are temporary. This one's about soccer.
Had a video pop into my YouTube feed about how goalies had no protection in the early days. Roll of clips of goalies picking the ball up and getting creamed. Crazy to see. Irish Football is like that. Goalie dives and catches it, has to get up immediately and run for his life.wlu_lax6 wrote: Sun Mar 02, 2025 5:46 pm Huge fan of the new goalie time wasting rule. Re: All threads are temporary. This one's about soccer.
The dreams I remember best are the ones I have right before I wake up. I had one that I thought you guys would appreciate.
So I'm staying at a hotel for a convention for something. I got down to the front desk, and the front desk attendant, or maybe the hotel manager, was Emily Blunt. A guest was lodging a complaint about something, but this set Emily off, and she started responding back, "do you think you have it rough? I'm a Bengals fan! Our stupid cheap-ass owner is going to make us lose JaMarr Chase! I don't care about the water pressure in your room!"
The guest slinks away. I head somewhere, only to return to the front desk. Again, a guest is making a complaint, and again, this sets Emily Blunt off. But this time, she responds back "I don't care about your problems! I'm a Bills fan! It doesn't matter how good Josh is, we're never getting past Mahomes!"
The second guest slinks away. Then a third guest comes up a few moments later, but before the guest can speak, Emily Blunt yells out "I don't care about your problems! I'm a Browns fan! I've suffered more than you can ever imagine!"
At this, now I was upset. I come running to the front desk and start admonishing Emily Blunt, wagging my finger. "That's a lie! You told two guests ago you were a Bengals fan, and the guest before him you were a Bills fan. You are trying to piggyback the pain of fanbases you couldn't care less about! This is stolen valor! Shame! Shame! Shame!" This starts a "Shame!" chant like she's Cersei Lannister. I head outside to get my ride.
I come back inside, and people are still chanting "Shame!" at Emily Blunt. She's distraught. I go up to the front desk and say "So what do you have to say for yourself?"
She puts on a black baseball cap with a logo, tilts her head up so we can see her face and the logo, and replies dejectedly "Bournemouth."
