I had been thinking about Bill Burr's podcast since I bloviated that post above, and I think you are right. His is not super hi-fidelity, but the quality is sufficient and does not distract. His costs are prob much lower than the numbers I threw out. I am so impressed by him and others, at their ability to be interesting for more than an hour, just talking off the top of their head.

He's actually surprisingly engaging and pretty enlightened, compared to the meathead persona I assumed he'd have. I used to tune in fairly regularly.
HOWEVAH, I'm not listening to 3 hours of just about anything. I have to admit, that's my issue with the Carlin history podcasts. It's just too much information for me.

hilarious random stuff like this
Alert: the Sherriff’s Secret Police are searching for a fugitive named Hiram McDaniels, who escaped custody last night following a 9pm arrest. McDaniels is described as a five-headed dragon, approximately 18 feet tall, with mostly green eyes and weighing about 3600 pounds. He is suspected of insurance fraud. McDaniels was pulled over for speeding last night, and the Secret Police became suspicious when he allegedly gave the officers a fake driver’s license for a five foot eight man named Frank Chen. After discerning that Frank Chen was actually a five-headed dragon from somewhere other than our little world, the Secret Police searched McDaniels’ vehicle. Representatives from local civil rights organizations have protested that officers had no legal grounds to search the vehicle, but they ceded the point when reminded by Secret Police officials that our backwards court system will uphold any old authoritarian rule made up on the fly by unsupervised gun-carrying thugs of a shadow government. The Secret Police say McDaniels escaped police custody by breathing fire from his purple head, and he was last seen flying and shrieking over Red Mesa. Secret Police are asking for tips leading to the arrest of Hiram McDaniels. They remind you that, if seen, he should not be approached, as he is literally a five headed dragon. Contact the Sherriff’s Secret Police if you have any information. Ask for Officer Ben. Helpful tipsters will earn one stamp on their Alert Citizen card. Collect five stamps, and you get stop sign immunity for one year.

Re: Podcasts
So, I've been listening to Serial, season 1 during my drives this week. I think I just finished ep 9 of 12 total (I think). And ... at this point, I just haven't heard anything that makes me convinced that Adnan didn't do it. When I first started, I was very intrigued about getting to weigh all of this counter-evidence and learn about how the corrupt/inept criminal system failed him. But that hasn't really happened. Yes, it seems to me that that State had a fairly thin case - essentially only the word of Jay - but these podcasts have done very little to rebut the things Jay said.
Yes, Jay sounds like a sketchy dude, but :
a) why would he lie about this? He had nothing to gain and a lot to lose.
b) Jay knew where her car was. Clearly he was involved at some level.
c) If Jay actually killed her, that's a hell of a bad coincidence for Adnan that he also lent Jay his car and cellphone on the same day.
Adnan seems like a nice guy and all, but I just don't see where there's anything there absolving him.

Re: Podcasts
[*] Jay has motive to do what he's doing. I don't feel like getting too deeply into it, but he had legal issues he was dealing with and the prosecutor put the screws to him.
[*] Jay's knowledge of just about every key fact is dubious, at best. But specifically on the car, he is on record saying he was in the area where the car was eventually located by the police. Knowing the location of a car, sitting out in the open for six weeks, in an area he admits to traveling through frequently... That's not really all that big of a deal.
[*] This is down the path of believing Jay knows a bunch of shit because he was personally involved. I'm firmly of the belief that Jay knows a bunch of shit because the police and prosecutor fed him a bunch of information. The clearest and strongest evidence of this is how he changes his story to match cell phone records and pings off of cell towers - which we now know were completely unreliable as a means to pinpoint locations back then. Locations change, people that he visits change, the timing slides all over the place.

Did you see this interview with Jay? He has some pretty good explanations for why the details of his story changed.

Saying he knew where her car was simply because he had been in that area a lot is a pretty dubious explanation. The police were actively looking for it and couldn't find it and this guy, the key witness, just accidentally finds it?

Yeah, pretty convenient, right? I'm coming at this from an angle that the police coached Jay. If you don't want to sink all the way in, but want some pretty strong evidence of this, check out the third episode of Undisclosed.

Just finished listening to an episode of "The Dead Authors Podcast." The conceit is that HG Wells interviews dead authors (all played by comedians.
Listened to Kristen Schaal as Tennessee Williams and laughed my guts out. Inspired lunacy. Can't vouch for the other episodes, but it's been on for a few years, so must be doing something right.

Re: Podcasts
The last two Samplers, with Molly Ringwold and Alex Bloomberg (sp?) as guests have been killer. I don't know if she's going to flip the format to this going forward, but I really like it as a change of pace.
I liked her choices... to a point. I think having just ONE person trying to cover and pluck interesting podcasts to share from all that is out there isn't just a logistical issue, it's an issue of singularity of opinion/taste. It felt like she was going down the path of what interests a young black professional. Which, while I found interesting, wasn't going to carry my attention too much longer.

Yeah... Just... Yeah... It's the first Reply All I wasn't totally digging. I think they tried too hard making the woman sound mysterious. The actual story is kind of interesting and it definitely highlights that a lot of what "goes viral" these days is bullshit.
But, you know, Jimmy Kimmel showed that to be true in a lot more entertaining fashion years ago.

Re: Podcasts
I don't recommend listening to the whole thing unless you are really interested in him and his career due to the podcast's length (the whole thing clocks in at about 2:20), but Jim Jefferies was on Industry Standard with Barry Katz #138 a couple weeks ago.
What I do recommend doing is downloading it just to listen to a story Jim tells about a birthday party he was booked to tell stand-up at. It was one of a couple answers he offered to the question, "If you wrote your life story, what experiences have you had that people wouldn't believe actually happened?" The story involves Eddie Murphy, Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty.
The story starts with 23:20 left in the podcast and wraps up with 11:15 left. Well worth 12 minutes.

Re: Podcasts
CBC's "Someone Knows Something" has me hooked. Documentary film-maker asked by CBC to start a series and the first case he tackles is a cold case of a missing boy from 1972. Maybe its the setting (Ontario Valley) and/or the accents... But I suspect it's the way he tells the story, but I plowed through 8 episodes yesterday while doing yard work.
My only gripe is that the episodes clock in around 35 minutes and seem short to me. Not really a criticism that the time seems to fly by while I'm listening.

Forgot about that podcast. I listened to the first 20 or so episodes, I think on your recommendation. Fascinating stuff, as I learned a lot about the behind the scenes politics of getting a TV show or movie made. Most of the interviews were with people like casting directors, and other insiders you never heard of. It started to get repetitive, and hearing so many comedians bashing Katz as a scumbag, I stopped listening. The Katz stories changed my perception of him. I'll give it a listen, I was looking for a new comedy or story telling podcast.DSafetyGuy wrote:I don't recommend listening to the whole thing unless you are really interested in him and his career due to the podcast's length (the whole thing clocks in at about 2:20), but Jim Jefferies was on Industry Standard with Barry Katz #138 a couple weeks ago.

The podcast does get very repetitive and I have a hard time listening to the ones with executives. That said, I have listened to a couple where I actually know either the interviewee or someone who gets mentioned during the interview, which can be fun.The Sybian wrote:Forgot about that podcast. If you want a comedy/storytelling podcast, I recommend the Crab Feast with Ryan Sickler and Jay Larson. Two comedians who have a guest (normally, another comedian) and they just tell stories throughout.

The story involves Eddie Murphy, Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty.
The story starts with 23:20 left in the podcast and wraps up with 11:15 left. Well worth 12 minutes.

Re: Podcasts
I'm not sure if this is real or not, but I am sure that Sickler would be emitting his high-pitched cackle at this.Nonlinear FC wrote:Sorry if this is covered up thread, but have you given The Crab Feast a listen? It is two comedians who have one guest comedian on to tell 2 or 3 stories. It's not ALWAYS great, but when they get the right guest it can be AMAZING. Plus, I just like the two hosts (Jay Larson and Ryan Sickler.)The Sybian wrote:Forgot about that podcast.
