AB, please tell me that Sabbatini is not going to troll us all and win the gold for a country he is not from and is only representing because his future ex-wife is from there.

Xander wins Gold, Sabbatini wins silver and there is 7-man playoff for bronze featuring McIlroy, Morikawa and Matsuyama.

Hell of a transition by the Aussie women last night. I think in the 4x100 medley. The lady yankees were ahead and the Aussie freestyler took a shot at going as early as possible and that was really all she wrote.

How is it that USA volleyball is lacking in 6"5 jumpers with ball skills. Ridiculous.

Say what you want about the Detroit Lions but if you’re a Canadian women’s soccer fan the last time your team beat the United States almost no one had heard of Osama bin Laden.

You almost have to root for the Canucks, right?

Well, you guys wanted revenge, so that PK call should be enough to pretty much even that out. Jesus that was bullshit. That's not a foul, period.

I'm caught up. That was never a penalty.

In general, I'm a fan of VAR... But, man, that is the exact wrong way to use the technology.

It's not the most egregious thing in the world, and CAN had every right to win that game. Just not impressed with this version of the US squad. They are too old and way too predictable, given the overall level of talent in the player pool.

They need to get over the tenure model and bring in some fresh thinking and a more attack-minded approach.

Definitely rooting for CAN in the next game.

I've said this countless times here. When you bring in replay, it becomes black and white, there is no longer any nuance. This is why people are against it. A human referee will always deem a foul in the box has to be more egregious than one in the middle of the field. Or a foul that leads to a offensive advantage is more egregious than a harmless one. The rule book doesn't cover this but it's just human nature and the players understand this.

When you bring in replay, all fouls are now treated equal. So a foul in the box, any foul in the box is a penalty, no matter how weak it is. Yes VAR is designed for obvious errors, but by slowing things down, it catches everything. It's like in baseball when a runner's fingernail comes off the bag. Of in football a player's foot just touching the sideline. That's not what it was intended for but there you have it.

Two tweaks they need to make:

* Like you said, degen, they need to lean more heavily into the "clear and obvious" side of reversing calls. The refs seem to be erring on the side you laid out, which is that any type of contact that can possibly be construed as a foul is getting a PK. When you slow things down to the absolutely freeze-frame, most stuff looks bad on replay. If, when you run a play back on replay in real-time, and it still makes you think the original call was correct, don't overturn it.

* I'll say, again, they need to fix the offsides rule. Pretty simple fix (if any part of the attacker is onside, there you have it) and it would eliminate so many positive plays being wiped out.

Your point about offsides is Arsene Wengers proposal. It is being trialed by FIFA. Might be in place for the 2022 World Cup

My dude Erriyon Knighton bossed his semifinal heat in the 200m dash this morning. He spent the last 100m looking sideways at his competition to see if he could coast a bit, or if he needed to go all out. Kid is 17 years old and from my rival HS. He made local news earlier this year when he signed with Adidas, giving up any HS track or football eligibility. His senior year starts next Tuesday.

A decathlete just bit it and faceplanted on a long jump. Thought he just hurt his pride but he stayed down for a while and got wheel-chaired off.

And a Canadian decathlete just put down a jump that would have earned a bronze medal in the actual long jump competition.

And the judges/official somehow let the US competitor jump out of order and they’re trying to figure out how to swap his score with the guy who was supposed to jump. Exciting stuff.

The next jumper (dude from ROC) had a glorious French braid.

And the US competitor after that (Scantling) is a former NFL player.

The long jump the other day was terrible, the winner was almost 2 feet shorter than Powell's WR in Tokyo. It's like no one really enters long jump anymore.
