A reference to my kid's report card, in what I thought was the appropriate thread, written after the Penguins won their game and I had a couple of beers, which led me to punctuate my excitement by tagging on "Boom.", and perhaps serendipitously leave out an apostrophe.

I'd rather be drinking with my wife and/or friends, but drinking free bourbon while swamping at the Detroit airport Delta Sky Club ain't bad.

My Mom just pointed out that she remembers what number the Kentucky Derby is at is by my age, since I was born the year of the 100th Derby (1974). I had never thought of remembering it that way; at least once a year I have to look it up to confirm I have the number right. I's not too smart sometimes...

Halifax is actually two wins away from winning the QMJHL championship (the Presidents Cup) and going undefeated throughout the playoffs. If they win the league, then they get a trip to the Memorial Cup to play against the OHL and WHL champions and the host team (Saskatoon Blades).

This is random, but not something learned.

Going on vacation for two weeks and likely won't be internetting much during that time, so please, don't worry if you don't hear from me for awhile. I'm likely ok. So don't worry, you guys.

EL Doctorow wrote a really good book called Homer & Langley. I didn't expect to be taken in by it, but i really was.

I didn't find out it was based in some truth until, well, until JUST FREAKING NOW.

So, Westboro Baptist tweeted that they are considering protesting at the funeral of Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman. Hmm... I can't imagine a gaggle of Slayer fans reacting well, so I think I'd pay to watch this.

Step 1 today. Doc was great. Warm hands. Probably going to get this done sometime in early June.
Step 2, made an appointment for the procedure on 6/19. The doc's preferred facility doesn't accept my insurance, and he's only in the alternative facility on Wednesdays, so I may end up having to take off three days instead of one or two.

You'll be better off with the extra time off. The pain goes away within a day or two but the swelling lasts longer. Don't wear tight jeans.

I was hoping to do it on a Thursday or Friday. No such luck.

Work usually has a shorts-on-Fridays-during-the-summer policy, so maybe if I'm feeling OK on that Friday I can try to get into for at least part of the day.

Watching the opening scene of Full Metal Jacket, I had no idea that the actor who played feeble-minded Private "Gomer Pyle" is the same dude that played the detective on Law & Order for a decade or so. Vincent D'Onofrio. He gained a ton of weight for that role.

Gunnery Sgt. Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) has no shortage of brilliant lines in that film (most of which are said to be ad lib'd). But one line I've never understood is I will motivate you, Private Pyle, if it short-dicks every cannibal on the Congo! What the hell does that mean? Or is it even supposed to mean anything?

I'd believe that. Kubrick seemed like the kind of guy that would just say "use it, it works" when the unpredicted occurred.

Yet that phrase still makes more sense than the entire last movie he 'directed'.

Yeah. Eyes Wide Shut, which took a full year to film, was pretty much just an excuse for Stanley to hang out around naked chicks all day while he ran out the clock.

I love the man's work so much, I don't know why I hate that pos so much and that I can't just let it go. Maybe if I go back and watch Paths of Glory or Spartacus again.

Or Strangelove. Or Clockwork.

Eyes Wide Shut, with its far too hollow story line, is just too much of a vanity film for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. And the title which is meant to define the way the characters go through their marriage actually contradicts their behavior. Perhaps that is intentional. If it is, it doesn't work. And the "secret society" scene, which goes on and on and on and on, while filmed in an interesting fashion, is just plain stupid. So is that agonizing weed-smoking scene after the fancy ball; probably the worst bit of acting either Cruise or Kidman has ever done, the drawn out ellipsis-loaded dialogue is painfully juvenile, two people who have probably never tried drugs in their lives trying to act high.

Strangelove I basically memorized. Clockwork I've only seen about a half-dozen times, so not quite memorized. Strangelove is one of my tip-top favorites. When Johnnie Comes Marching Home Again.

Okay, now I have to dig up my copy of Paths of Glory. It's been a long time.

Every now and then, that one, as well as Fear and Desire, The Killing and Killer's Kiss show up on TCM. I swear, if I could live with only one television channel it would be that one.

I remember when a buddy told me that too. I had to do a double take because I simply didn't believe him.

Same thing happened when I learned Jerry O'Connell was the fat kid in Stand By Me and Josh Brolin was the older brother in The Goonies.

I'm not sure if he gained weight or was just fat when he was younger and then lost the weight later. That seems more likely.
