"Given the potential desperation of President Putin and the Russian leadership, given the setbacks that they've faced so far militarily, none of us can take lightly the threat posed by a potential resort to tactical nuclear weapons or low yield nuclear weapons," he said in public remarks at Georgia Tech.

The Ukrainian soldiers tried to tell em. The naval portion of this war is pretty incredible.

Someone wrote about that in the new Yorker? This week. Didn't like the article but right issue maybe. that Ukrainian guy would know but lies and interests. Still if Putin is sick and if the war has moved toward inevitable loss after all efforts... Opportunists and alternative public facts and military control. At what point does US interests switch to known quantities in Russian power.

It’s not about rank, it’s the act that someone is telling the hard truth on Russian TV. I see Novichok or a prison cell in his near future.

All I can assume is they hoped that confessing to having it (possession vs. criminal intent, but no idea if that's a Russian thing at all and I suspect not) would help the cause/sentencing. Not looking good though.

The way I took it, she'd have to be convicted before she would be available as a prisoner exchange.

I get that there's a high probability that she just forgot and had her weed vape pen in her bag. I'd probably say that's the most likely thing that occurred, the plurality if not the majority chance. But Russia is so duplicitous in everything related to Ukraine and is such an egregious bad faith actor that I can't put it past it being a significant possibility that they framed her. IIRC, the video they show of her wasn't unbroken, and the break in the video could've shown them slipping the vape pen in there.

I think it is obvious. Trump would’ve prevented the US from assisting Ukraine and would have attempted to prevent NATO from any involvement or expansion. Russia would now be absorbing Ukraine into satellite status (at a minimum) and perhaps begun sabre-rattling at other neighbors.

So... Not that this site is where you expect to get all your news, but HUGE development with Putin mobilizing 300k reservists.

To say this is a desperate act is putting it mildly. These guys are going to get dropped into a fight that the full-timed, better trained, more cohesive troops were getting their asses handed to them for months. They're gonna just, what, try to bodybag their way to overwhelming the Ukrainians?

This is exactly what you want if you are Ukraine. It's one thing for 10s of thousands of career soldiers to get sent home in boxes, now you've got (for the most part) civilians getting ripped from their lives and sent to a war that many don't want to fight in (to put it mildly.)

They need to give Putin an out so he can somewhat save face. I don't think pulling a Neville Chamberlain and giving them the Donbas is the answer. Would simply assuring him that they won't send a crimes against humanity tribunal against him be enough? I hate letting a butcher go free, but I wouldn't want to reward this behavior either. What would a palatable middle ground be?

That is exactly the type of thing that will get typically politically uninterested Russians to rise up against Putin. I don't know if it's still the case, but in the 1990s all Russian men had to do some sort of military service after high school. I think it was just a year or two, so every man had at least some training. This mandatory service was extremely unpopular. No civilian is going to want to sign up for this war, and no parents of men fighting age are going to want to send their sons off. Unless Putin can somehow steamroll the Ukrainians quickly or find an exit strategy he can call a victory, this could very well end Putin's reign.

I've read that Putin's strategy is hold a vote in certain regions and declare the people want to be part of Russia, so if the Ukraine tries to take back these occupied regions, Putin will consider it an invasion of Russia. Biden denounced this in front of the UN yesterday, and I don't see the rest of the world going along with Putin's ruse here, but it may convince the Russian citizens. They are getting so much propaganda, they can't see reality.

It's against "international law" to basically annex a territory and then have them "vote" to declare the annexation legitimate. For whatever that's worth.

The other issue that is being raised today is how incredibly difficult it's going to be just from a logistical standpoint to mobilize that many troops. Not to mention trying to integrate them into the existing structure, which by all accounts is shambolic to begin with.

You are right, this could spell the end for Putin. Not seeing a lot of ways out for him at this point. I guess if they can hold onto Crimea and the Donbas and call it a day.

A day ago I saw a series of tweets that showed flights out of Russia skyrocketed before his announcement that he then delayed.

So yea. Things are getting worse with this call up.

Oh, and "gravity-assisted suicides" appear to be the cause of death for like a dozen Russian oligarchs over the last couple months. People just "falling down the stairs" and "jumping off of buildings" and shit.
