Things brings up one of my favorite baseball stories I read as a kid.

There are two players who have hit five homers in a double header.

Stan Musial did it in 1954. In the crowd that day, cheering for the Cardinals, was eight year old Nate Colbert.

Nate Colbert did it in 1972.

I knew the story Steve referenced.

He’s the Padres career HR leader with 163. That seems really, really low, especially for a team that’s been in existence for over 50 years. People talk about bad franchises (and I’ll accept the slings and arrows for mine) but man, the Padres are really a disappointment.

On the other hand, they've managed to win two pennants.

When I was ten, Topps included a little player poster along with your gum and baseball cards. For a time, a poster of Nate Colbert graced the bedroom wall of young sancarlos.

Team records are always insanely weird. Like Kreider is already the 8th all-time goal scorer in NYR history despite the franchise being around 100 years and him being 31 playing in a lower scoring era.

As I recall, back in the day their old stadium was one of the hardest to hit out of. I think it was 420 to centre with a 15 foot wall.

The Ballpark Factor for San Diego Stadium in 1972 was 88 for batting and 91 for pitching.

Though I've never understood why they'd be different, since presumably the pitchers were pitching to batters and the batters were batting against pitchers.

Without those back injuries, he could've been in the running for the HOF, or at least the Hall of Very Good. Colbert had a 132 OPS+ in the five seasons from 1969-1973, his age 27 season. Then he was meh in 1974 (96 OPS+ in 437 PAs) and terrible after that. Retired at 30.

Well earlier tonight, I got a Wall Street Journal alert that she had been hospitalized. And I wondered about that, because I didn’t think she met the threshold for me needing to be told she was hospitalized. Dead, sure. But not hospitalized. They must have known something I didn’t.

There’s definitely a middle ground between this thread and getting your own but it’s not really worth debating too seriously since anyone can start a thread.
