Belize isn’t too good at soccer you guys, though they did score this evening (after losing to CR 0-7 last week) and it was a pretty embarrassing lapse for CR’s keeper. Crowd wasn’t happy.

But the crowd itself didn’t feel much different than a game in the US (except for the whistles instead of boos) but everything else (how the vendors moved through the crowd, what food they sold, the tile covering pretty much every surface in the interior of the stadium) felt a little different.

Sorry if I missed this elsewhere, but how did you end up in Costa Rica? Are you on vacation, work, ?

The company I work for now has a satellite office down here. Second trip I’ve gotten to make in about 3 years since that relationship began.

No alcohol sold inside. My hotel is directly across the street and there is a pretty good bar on the ground floor there, though they canceled their normal 2 for 1 happy hour for game day.

This place is seconded. Bread is so fresh. The herbs are crunchy pungent, pork perfectly cooked with a light niceong. sauce, and I get it with fried egg.

i asked our teams last week why no soccer.. they all grow up with Cricket..and although they also play soccer.. they have a love of cricket very similar to that that we have in south america (and other places) for soccer. they love their cricket.
they all play it. they got us to play.. spend a sunday afternoon in 100 degree sun playing cricket. no beers.
the women get into it in a way i've only seen NY women (puerto rican, dominican) get into the mets/yankees.

Outside of cricket, it's just not a sporting nation. People don't care about any other sport and thus there's no government money, there's no advertising dollars etc....

India has 10 gold medals in their entire summer olympic history, 8 of them are for field hockey (last in 1980)
They have 2 individual golds, women's boxing (2012) and men's javelin (2020)

So Brazil adds a rule to the game. If you stand on top of the ball with both feet you get a yellow and the other team gets a free kick. Memphis and Neymar vocally disagree. Feels unnecessary. They do the skill move and you just hack him down some point later on the field. It polices itself.

So, the San Siro is amazing. Inter's Curva Nord ultras didn't stop singing and chanting the entire match. Apparently they don't stop criming either as leaders of both Milan and Inter's ultra groups were arrested recently on some mafia shit. Torino going down to 10 men early was all it took to make this very much not a stereotypical boring Serie A defensive slugfest. Got to see a Marcus Thuram hat trick in person. Really glad I got to go, especially considering they may be tearing it down soonish.

It’s not impossible of course but even the TV show money is a pittance compared to what a club with a 30,000 seat ground can generate in revenue not to mention Wrexham isn’t exactly London or Manchester or even Cardiff so there’s only so much money than can be wrung from the Hollywood angle and my guess is that revenue stream is probably more or less maxed out.


Don’t get me wrong - I’m rooting for them bc it would be an amazing story. But their recent financial disclosures show that they’re generating way more revenue than a typical League One side but average for a Championship side and it’s hard to see how much more they can bump that up. They are building a permanent stand to replace the temporary one and that might add another 3,000 seats I believe and obviously that’ll help.
