I mean, they also covered another Dionne Warwick song written by Bacharach (& David).

Funny how every era has its style of song arrangements. The naked eyes version is very 1980s. Here’s the original 1960s arrangement of the same song.

A long, long time ago, I worked on this show:

"Worked on", as in stayed at the office when everyone traveled to NYC to actually do the show, but did deliver a couple items to Bacharach's gated condo. Our director had no idea Ben Folds Five was so loud (a recording of their performance is linked - pretty sure her entire experience with them to that point was "Brick").

and

Along with the Dionne Warwick and Stranglers version, that's 4 really good and unique versions of the same song. That's amazing.

Yeah, their Promises, Promises is not the one Bacharach and David wrote. Sorry about that!

MaxWebster and I are working through the list of "Albums to hear before you die" and we have a running discussion of our listens. Had a good discussion of music in the 70s. Just when production techniques finally matched musicianship and how some of those songs are just fucking amazing to hear.

at the risk of derailing the thread, I believe so much isn't necessarily that music was "better" or whatever but even then having limitations on recording (i.e. 24 track recorders were absolute cutting edge in the 70s) forced not just musicians but their producers/engineers in the studio to plan recordings (preproduction) so much more than today. You'd work on arranging each part to be *just so* and balanced and have to bounce tracks etc to free up space for other parts and only then would tracks be laid down in the studio (also related: studio expense/time).

Contrast with today where you have infinite tracks and producers can (and do) just layer layer layer (I do this as my part-time job, and from home even - that's how many light years the technology is ahead of even 20 yrs ago). It's easy and incredibly fun - but also creates a dense digital mess which then forces the engineers to perfect it all which as a result so much of it comes out "too perfect" (i.e. sterile) - this also has the added effect of it sounding "just like everything else" - it's hard to go back.

Back on point though - i've started working through this 9yr old interview with Bacharach this morning sent by a friend...:

That's really interesting to this novice, Max.

I wonder if it's why live music seems to be so entertaining to many of us. It's hard to overly produce a concert.

it might be! if only we could find a way to have no *people* there, that would help :P (jk jk .... mostly...)

yeah it's the *space* and dynamics in music that i think most people don't realize isn't there as much anymore.

Best known as Det Munch on multiple TV shows, but was also a great stand-up comedian back in the 70's and 80's.

If you believe the Tommy Weiseau theory is gospel, Munch was the link to half the tv universe.

He was also in Scarface doing standup in the nightclub science when they attempt a hit on Tony.

Barbara Bosson, was married to Steven Bochco for 27 years, most well known for her Emmy-nominated role in Hill Street Blues, though she appeared in most of his other legal dramas as well, including another Emmy nom for Murder One and the not-so-much acclaimed Cop Rock.

I feel like I have memories of Cop Rock. Those procedurals were something my mom liked to watch, and I seem to recall watching that with her and her just being gobsmacked at how bad it was.

Just Fontaine, the record holder for goals in a single World Cup with 13.

He's still France's all time World Cup goal scorer. Mbappe has 12.

My oldest sister...she's been in really bad shape for a while now, afflicted with Multiple System Atrophy, and passed away this afternoon. She was in a skilled nursing facility for about 1 1/2 years, and went into hospice care about 2 months ago.

Known it was coming for a while, but still wrapping my head around it. Glad she's not suffering any longer.
