Recently been into 1980s Japanese jazz/funk. Instagram thought I was their target audience, and that algorithm really gets me because they were absolutely correct. It's perfect background/writing music.

Halfway through the new Tyler, the Creator album, CHROMAKOPIA and it's fantastic.

Strong agree. And I wasn't into his last one at all that won all the awards. At all.govmentchedda wrote: Fri Nov 01, 2024 7:59 pm Halfway through the new Tyler, the Creator album, CHROMAKOPIA and it's fantastic.
His production skills are ridiculous.
And he has poured his heart into this one.
This is one of those albums where, when you're listening to it, you think to yourself, "this might be a classic." Not saying it is a classic. Because that takes time and you have to earn it. But it feels like it will be the album of the year for me at least.

My 10 yo is a huge T,tC fan. Igor is/was his favorite, but I imagine with enough plays Chromokopia will overtake it. We got tix to see him in Orlando in March.garyclark wrote: Sun Nov 03, 2024 10:56 amStrong agree. And I wasn't into his last one at all that won all the awards. Really pushed opposite ways here. Intentionally saw Spoon since this post (although it was more for Interpol) and still don’t get/like the Hold Steady. Unsurprisingly listening to a Frightened Rabbit a lot the past few days and the Craig Finn version of “Heads Roll Off” made me angry.mister d wrote: Mon Apr 20, 2020 1:19 pm I don't believe so unless it was part of the larger "Bands I Should Be Into" list where everyone yelled at me about The Hold Steady.

On the other hand, Julien Baker’s version of “Modern Leper” is the perfect cover in terms of being different but great and still recognizable.
Re: Getting the spins
That Ben Gibbard cover of “Keep Yourself Warm” is really good and Death Cab is a band that is hit and miss for me.mister d wrote: Sat Nov 09, 2024 7:56 pm On the other hand, Julien Baker’s version of “Modern Leper” is the perfect cover in terms of being different but great and still recognizable.
In fact Death Cab’s cover of “King Of Carrot Flowers” is really good now that I think about. He/they might just have a talent for re-interpretation.

I got really into Lucifer on the Sofa a year or so ago. I dig the Hold Steady hits, but generally don't get top far past them in their discography. Eh. His voice is too smooth for anything Neutral Milk Hotel. Fall on Me works I guess. But not really. Neither are really reinterpretations. It's just his voice over a cover of the song.brian wrote: Sat Nov 09, 2024 8:15 pmThat Ben Gibbard cover of “Keep Yourself Warm” is really good and Death Cab is a band that is hit and miss for me.mister d wrote: Sat Nov 09, 2024 7:56 pm On the other hand, Julien Baker’s version of “Modern Leper” is the perfect cover in terms of being different but great and still recognizable.

ETA - Stipe's voice is a lot better than Gibbard's (at least on Stipe's material).

This is so lovely.
Re: Getting the spins
Tyler's album is so good. It's a true album. Beginning to end. There is like one skippable song. It's reflective, artistic, smart, and most of all, the beats are incredible and the rhymes are great. Some nice cameos.
Yesterday, I was working from a coffee shop and listened to it again beginning to end, and texted my youngest that I think it's my album of the year.
Then he texted me the Kendrick link, and said, "Not so fast, Dad."

He's not wrong. I'm only one and a half listens through GNX, but it's great too.

Lucero (well Ben Nichols and Rick Steff) releasing an “Unplugged” album recorded on acoustic guitar and piano only on 1/24/25. Interesting track list (in Spoilers so post isn’t unnecessarily long.

That Kendrick album is great.
And there's a rumor he has another one already ready to drop.
Whatever the opposite of writer's block is, Kendrick has it.
No one will ever be anywhere as prolific as Prince in terms of being able to turn out quality music seemingly on a whim.
But I'm starting to get the feeling this guy is as close as we're gonna see.

I'd say he's the hip hop Zach Bryan, but it's mostly not quality with him.

I think overall I like the Tyler album more. The highs are definitely higher on GNX, but I think CHROMAKOPIA might be a better album. I reserve the right to change my opinion.garyclark wrote: Mon Nov 25, 2024 5:13 pm That Kendrick album is great.

Too soon to tell for me, but you could be right. Just saying this is two great albums from Kendrick this year ... so far.govmentchedda wrote: Mon Nov 25, 2024 6:21 pmI think overall I like the Tyler album more. Saw him live in Baltimore, and he was fantastic.

I was just listening to Gangstagrass on the Youtubes and after the song, it auto-switched to this. Damn. Anyone else feeling that?

That was much better than I expected. Those guys did a great job interpreting those songs. And hearing them done differently, but still really good, is quite a testament to quality of the songs. Zep II was always my favorite Zeppelin album.
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: Getting the spins
The 16 year-old texted me: "Not sure if you've heard this song before. But I think it's pretty good."

Lol. I explained to him that the reason he probably likes it is because when he was a little kid it was on half of my playlists. Same thing happened with Billy Joel's Piano Man a few days later.
This kind of stuff is one of my favorite parts of fatherhood.

This is the "run out of the tunnel/pump up" music choice for the Seahawks. Most teams go for something more like Metallica/Guns n' Roses/ACDC, but Seattle goes with the mid-tempo, minor key, neo-psychadelica brit-pop song. Totally on-brand.garyclark wrote: Sat Dec 07, 2024 12:25 pm The 16 year-old texted me: "Not sure if you've heard this song before. But I think it's pretty good."

Re: Getting the spins
Love Bobby McGee. I used to sing Johnny Cash Cocaine Blues and Folsom Prison Blues to my daughter when she was an infant. When she was around 2, she started singing to my dad. I heard her joyously sing, “I shot a man in Remo (sic, just to watch him die.” And my dad was howling with laughter.
I’ve played those songs for her years later, I don’t think any connections stuck.

My daughter, who usually listens to metal-core and rap, also loves “Beer Run” by Todd Snider, because we would sing it together when she was a little girl.

Re: Getting the spins
Kinda related, there are a lot of songs where I’ve inserted my name into the lyrics so often that the kids now unconsciously sing it my way.
Examples:
“Beautiful Dave” - U2
“Perfect Dave” - Lou Reed
“Lovely Dave” - Bill Withers
“Changes” - David Bowie (“Da-Da-David”)
“Hypnotize” - Notorious BIG (simply change Biggie to Daddy)
Might just edit this so I have a full repository for when it’s time to put together a greatest hits or funeral mix if my wife finally loses it.
