I get that. I'm feeling overwhelmed by trying to participate in society in a land of oligarchs.

I'm on a work-related WhatsApp chat, and someone was like, "should we switch off WhatsApp because of Meta's recent actions?" And someone else was like, "What are the other options? They're all owned by billionaires who are part of the same problem. And by the way, so are the people who make the phone you're using."

It's tough. To be clear, not saying this to convince you to quit Spotify because I think we're all just trying to navigate this and pick our battles.
I'm officially out of Spotify. Tidal has been a very pleasant experience. Sound is noticeably better (even on cellular data on my stock truck stereo) + interface is nice and simple. Overall seems to be more album-oriented, which makes sense given its market. There's a 3rd-party app that will allow me to transfer all my playlists for ~$5, which I'll do at some point. (Note for the interested: there's a 30-day trial... and it's a couple bucks cheaper to subscribe directly through Tidal website than the apple app store, naturally.)

Another reason.
Interesting. Does it have all of the same music?
Circling back... I listen to pretty niche stuff and haven't noticed any drop-off in band availability vis-à-vis Spotify. Can only listen to CSNY on Tidal tho ; )

Yes, there are lots of good cases for arguments. There is no groundswell of support for them to be in, but I’d vote for the J. Geils Band. They had more good albums than most of you kids know.

+1 But I grew up in CT where the AOR stations were well-dosed in J. Geils pre-Freeze-Frame.

No thanks on Isbell's new album. Maybe it'll grow on me if I hear the songs mixed in with other songs on a random playlist, but I will never ever be a fan of a stripped down acoustic solo album, no matter the artist.

Yeah, it's a downer for sure.

The new Bob Mould is unsurprisingly great. I think his last three releases have all landed on my end of year lists.

What’s a song that you love because it just reminds you of a place and time?

I’ll give you an example. There’s a bar called the Wayside in Mount Pleasant that was the premier “dance”/hookup bar in the 90s when I went to CMU and still today apparently but there was a tradition every night where the bar played “Runaround Sue” by Dion and the lyric “Ask any fool that she every knew” was changed and yelled “She’s a girl who went to CMU”

and if I live to be 100 I’ll always hear the lyric that way and think of college.

Similar lyric change - for some reason this one always stuck with me, and I always hear the lyric the changed way. Back when I was in college, some guys who were friends of friends rented a house that was next door to the SAE (Sigma Alpha Epsilon) house. I remember one raging house party there, the stereo playing Tom Petty at as loud a volume as was possible, and the guys yelling out the (changed) lyrics as loud as possible, "No ya don't! Have! To live like an SAE!" (repeated ad nauseam.)

It's a little bit disjointed at times, but I dig it. That is like a lot of the music i like already, too, so I figured I would enjoy it. It's uneven is maybe the best way I can describe it right now.

There will never be a band with a gap as wide between their studio and live stuff than Counting Crows. I wouldn’t go see them for anything less than a free VIP ticket that included free drinks, free food, and the Bonds.

I probably should have waited 6 months to read this ...

47. Wrens — The Meadowlands (2003)
I put this at No. 47 because this album is catnip for the average 47-year-old indie-rock fan. (I know this because I am an average 47-year-old indie-rock fan.) If you say the word “Wrens” to an average 47-year-old indie-rock fan, he will instantly launch into a reverie about how The Meadowlands is a beloved cult favorite in which every song builds to an emotionally overpowering peak, with impossibly high stakes, as if the lives of bookish fellows with receding hairlines everywhere will be disrupted irrevocably if the climactic guitar solo does not arrive on time. (Thankfully, it always does.)

Given the clue I want it to be something off Teen Dream.

I'm finding myself mostly liking the list but (1) Destroyer is way too high, (2) no Frightened Rabbit and (3) Boxer.

Text I sent last week

"I'm drinking scotch on a bus tour through the highlands listening to Frightened Rabbit. If we die in a crash, know it's the way I wanted to go."

I need to go back and listen to Beach House, but no, that's not the answer.
