That beige building immediately in front of it looks like it just fucking shattered.

I get that there were fireworks at the start, but what the hell blew up at the end there?

Maybe the rest of the fireworks?

I don't know - that was an unbelievably shock wave. Have they said if anything else was being stored nearby?

I've seen videos of fireworks factories/storage facilities blowing up before and it looks exactly like that. I don't know much of the whys and hows of it, but presumably it took a little while for the fires/smaller explosions to reach the large cache of explosives that triggered the huge final explosion.
(Also, if you've ever read a book about the Halifax Explosion it's pretty similar to that as well. That explosion was the largest in human history before the detonation of the first atomic bomb but the fires/smaller explosions took awhile to reach the point where the entire ship went up.)

From a Reddit comment section:
Lebanese here.
Last report: the explosion in the port of beirut. There was a lot of nitrate ammunium and chemicals in one of the biggest buildings of the port. The chemicals were there for years found in an abandoned ship in the sea next to the port. 6months ago the government checked it again, experts said they should get rid of it as soon as possible, they reported that many people will die and beirut city will be destroyed if not taken care of. The government didn't listen, this is the result.
Edit : the air is poisonous, people are asked to stay home and close windows and wash themselves if they were outside. Problem is most of the windows in building are destroyed.
You need to know that the port is located at the exact opposit of the airport, which is around 15min drive. And the airport got damaged. So everything in between got hit in some way
Latest update : 7km diameter of direct damage. Buildings windows in that zone shattered in an instant. Hospitals full and no electricity, doctors are doing operations in the streets, people are fighting for survival. Port completely destroyed. FYI, lebanon does alot of import, specially now with economy crisis and medical shortage. We were expecting food and medical supplies by port this week. That won't be happening
Edit : sorry for weird english
That's fucking terrifying.

Big, wet president said "our great generals" said it was "an attack", though there's not been any other evidence of that and he's known for inventing things that "our generals" have said before.

That's fantastic statesmanship!!!
Israel sending aid, Hezbollah trying to keep Beirut calm, yet the President of the United States shoots his mouth off like that. And like you said - probably made it up on the spot so he seemed informed.
Lebanese Interior Ministry says it was an ammonium nitrate explosion.
The Oklahoma City bombing had 4,800 pounds of an anfo combination. It did damage in a 4 block or so radius. So to do the destruction this had to have been a nearly unimaginable amount of Ammonium Nitrate.

I tried, and also felt sort of bad about it, but I think I screwed up the quote
I knew what you were going for. I was going to make the joke, but you beat me to it.

I read an article that the Ammonium Nitrate was seized off a ship, and some government agency issued a report 6 months ago about the danger of keeping it there and requesting its removal.

Approximately 1400 times (!) the amount apparently.

And as that article states, there are major questions about why that much ammonium nitrate was there in the first place. Also kind of in passing says that it's been a known issue for 6 years.
The state-owned news agency Tass quoted an unidentified law enforcement source as saying that the authorities were not yet considering the possibility of a deliberate poisoning. It said that Mr. Navalny could have “taken something himself” before boarding the plane.

Mr. Navalny committed suicide by shooting himself in the back of the head and in his torso 3 times. Very tragic, comrades.

Holy shit - Navalny released a video about Putin's corruption.
Check out the palace Putin is building himself. Starts at 30:00 in the video.

Trump definitely wanted to follow the Putin mob boss model of running a country for the next 20 years and build a secret mansion with tax dollar money in some Florida swamp. The Russian protests are getting a lot of attention on BBC; probably will lead to nothing but more people jailed, but maybe someday

You’re probably right, but it depends how sick of Putin the average Russian is. Like the GOP/Trump here, Putin knows how to play to the nationalist base to make sure he maintains support from about half the country. (and a vocal half). It takes erosion of that support for others to risk their lives and well-being to take to the streets.

Spoke with my Uncle in Israel yesterday, and he agrees that the timing of all of this - a couple of days before Netanyahu would lose his grip on power - is more than a little fishy.
