We don't, as we are people who pay attention.

I think they've learned that although EVERYTHING they say is on the record, most people are too busy watching "Big Brother" to follow what their elected officials say.

I don't know, I don't think she is too upset about the discussion in this thread. The prevailing notion is that if you repeat something, it becomes fact. Nobody cares long enough to fact check, as the media has moved on to Kim Kardashian's latest selfie of her ass.

I could have posted this in the 538 thread, but I guess I'll post it here. Silver and company now say the probabilities indicate that the Republicans will likely take control of the Senate this November.

Allison Grimes, the Dem candidate running against Mitch "Cecil Turtle" McConnell, is quite the firebrand.

Not her personally, but the rhythm, the intonations of her speech were making me sick.

"Fancy Farm?" Sounds like a place where Dora would find a hidden map or something. And it's all so down home and gosh, gee whiz, swell...

And $100 million is being spent to send one of these "jus' folks" to Washington. Hope their human props enjoyed the barbecue.

Fancy Farm is a kentucky political tradition and I wouldn't be caught within 100 miles of it. The part that bugs me most about Grimes is doublespeak (As politicians are wont to do) and the general scriptedness of her approach. She is trying to be a middle-of the-road candidate because she realized early on that her allegiance to Obama was really really bad at this time in this state. She hasn't pulled it off and it's a direct party-line race that I don't think will be as close as the polls suggest.

A good candidate could have supplanted Mitch. I doubt Grimes is it.

That's a shame. I know nothing about her, other than she isn't McConnell. He is the top 5 worst Congressmen. Every time I see him speak, I want to punch him in his turtle face.

In shocking news, Victoria Jackson lost her bid for County Commissioner in Williamson County, TN. Her platform of saving the country from Socialism fell short. With campaign videos like this, how do you not vote for her? I would have, just for the comedy sure to follow. Odd that the first time she was ever funny is 20 years after her career ended and she become politically active.

I was at a slow pitch softball team practice. I was 17yo, baseball season was over, killing time until I started college in the fall, I had hooked on with a bunch of 'old guys' who were just out of college. The speech he gave that evening (Thursday August 8th) wasn't that big a deal since it was clear for three days that he was gone. (The Supremes ruled on July 24th that he had to give up the actual tapes to the House Judiciary Committee, and he complied a few days later. A 'smoking gun' tape of him authorizing the coverup was uncovered, and word of the contents leaked to the NYTimes, who published the news that Monday August 5th.)

Even though everyone knew it was coming, practice stopped to listen on a car radio (actually a pickup truck.) One of the older guys said we would remember this moment, like when JFK was shot.

Not quite, but I do remember the moment clearly.
Who knows? Maybe, you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away and held for ransom.

I remember a woman I worked with telling me that on the day of Nixon's resignation, she was at a Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concert. The crowd was making such a commotion celebrating the news that Crosby, Stills, and Nash got pissed and walked off the stage, while Neil Young stayed and finished the concert himself.

It seems like everyone I know over 50 has awesome stories like this. Meanwhile, I once had a class in high school with a guy who was a middle reliever for the Royals for a few years.

He had been previously informed "that his wife did not have the cognitive ability to consent to sexual activity".

Also:
Henry and Donna Rayhons were married in 2007. Two months ago, a Hancock County judge ordered that her daughter, Suzan Brunes, be made her temporary guardian, the Mason City Globe Gazette reported in June.

Brunes told the judge that Henry Rayhons had removed her mother from the facility without staff permission and that he had failed to follow instructions not to be in her room with the door closed and not to enter the room because of conflicts with her roommate.

If she is in a nursing home, she is very likely far gone. She died not long after the incident, so she was probably very, very far gone. The fact that there was only a hospital curtain separating them from the roommate, who heard everything, makes it a bit more disturbing. His camp claims "sexual contact" could be as little a hug or a kiss. I have no idea whether that is true, but the video of him throwing away underwear doesn't sound like a hug or a kiss. The article also says he was previously told she was not mentally capable of consenting, so he was on notice. I feel comfortable labeling this disturbing.

Sure it's gross, but illegal? Maybe I'm just looking at this from the "married forever" romantic side of things, but I'm not sure I would charge him with a crime for this.

If she is declared mentally incompetent to consent, it is no longer romantic. Would you be OK if Terri Schiavo's husband was banging her in the hospital?

Response to Sybian

No. I guess I just am considering the fact that someone might be declared mentally incompetent for the purposes of signing contracts, being able to care for themselves, etc., but that the same person might go in and out of lucidity. People going through dementia and Alzheimer's (not sure if she was) should be legally protected from falling prey to hucksters and thieves, but to call this guy either is a step I'm not sure I'm willing to take.

I'm not saying it is right, I'm just not willing to charge someone with this particular crime without knowing more about their intent going in.

I do see your side though, and agree that you could be 100% right. I think there's a chance it isn't criminal, and I err on the side of caution when considering someone's liberty.

Good point.
The criminal complaint said Rayhons acknowledged being told May 15 that his wife did not have the cognitive ability to consent to sexual activity.

On May 23, Henry Rayhons went into his wife's room and pulled the curtain closed, the complaint said. Donna Rayhon's roommate told authorities she heard noises indicating Henry Rayhons was having sex with Donna Rayhons, the complaint said.
So yeah, he went for some nookie only 8 days after being told he couldn't. And I'm going to guess he had tried (or succeeded) before May 15, which is why they told him that. Yeah, that sucks.

On the other hand, I guess he didn't cheat on her, right? If he really needed some lovin' and he couldn't bring himself to cheat on his incapacitated wife, I think that's actually kind of sweet.

Side story - I have a friend (a former coworker who I liked) who is probably around 55 or 60 and his wife has Alzheimer's. This guy is copywriter who is often just doing freelance work, so he has no money and his one daughter is useless for help. He's doing this on his own and his wife really went downhill quickly over the past few years. He posts updates to Facebook on a nearly daily basis and it's just heartbreaking. It's to the point now where she's just a large toddler. The woman he married is effectively gone and has been for a while - replaced by a cranky, difficult adult-sized toddler. He couldn't take a full-time job even if he wanted to.

So, about a year ago, he posted something to the effect that he was going to be a father again! It kind of blew my mind. A few clarifying posts made it clear that somehow he'd had a fling with a younger woman and had gotten her pregnant. I wasn't sure how to feel about it, but decided that it was OK. He wasn't abandoning his wife, but he didn't have any real companionship and people deserve that. He's a good dude who needed some good in his life. Maybe a baby at his age and life stage isn't the best choice, but then, why not?

I should also mention that this guy also quit drinking some time in the past few years. It's been a hell of a ride for him.

Alzheimer's really sucks.

Never mind. If he was told not to, and/or acknowledged her inability to consent, I withdraw all argument. I had not read that part.
