I was going to say that you can't go wrong with Schaub for a 6th Rounder, but that is a big salary hit. Being that it's the Raiders, it is bound to fail.
Torn about Vick to the Jets. No idea if Geno has what it takes to be a decent starter. Vick can be great, but is it worth starting Vick over Geno and inhibiting Geno's development? Then again, maybe sitting Geno for a year until they can develop a receiving corp might be a benefit. I just fear this is another Favre. Stalling the rebuild for a year.

Re: NFL Offseason Thread
Raiders had an obscene amount of cap space coming into this offseason (and had a lot of unused space last year) and no one wanted to take it. GM's grace period has ended, so positive results need to be shown.

It certainly feels like Carson Palmer redux...with less production and a higher cap hit.

Re: NFL Offseason Thread
I've only loosely followed him in the NFL, because he's a Virginia guy. I do know that in college, he very quietly got better each year until he had a monster senior season. He played at the same time as, and in the shadow of, Philip Rivers at NC State. While Rivers broke pretty much every ACC career record, Schaub actually outplayed him their senior year and was the ACC POY.howard wrote:Oddly, this makes me happy. It seems to me that his pro career has been pretty similar - quietly very damn good, just not usually on great teams.
That was why I was so shocked at how the Texans turned on him this year. It looked to me like he still had it in him. But maybe all of those returned INTs got in his head.
He's always been slow on his feet, so I wouldn't think foot surgery would be that big of a deal. Schaub is tall - 6'7" - so he's been able to compensate for not moving that well by being able to see and throw over defenders.
All in all, that's a lot of money, but he has a very good shot at being the best Raiders QB in a long time.
Totally Kafkaesque

Re: NFL Offseason Thread
I agree. I think Schaub's bad 2013 year was more due to shitty play calling then anything and eventually defenses figured it out and all those INTs got to his head.
I remember one early season game where they had Seattle by the balls and then inexplicably threw on 3rd down up late in the 4th quarter IN Seattle territory. It ruined the entire Texan's season.
-----
Here it is. Should never happen, run the ball and punt. Question always is, is the QB doing that on his own or is it on the coach?
The Cowboys did that once too and Garrett threw Romo under the bus.
Howard, tell the Raiders not to do that and you'll be fine!

Re: NFL Offseason Thread
watching schaub play, you can see the deer in the headlights look and the bad decisions. he threw a handful of pick 6's, and should've realistically thrown about 8 more that were dropped. he's coming off injury, didn't look good here, and had to go. you can't have a playoff team one year, and the nfl's worst record the next year without somebody losing their job. he was expensive as hell, nobody trusted him, and since we cant really be sure if the problem was wade phillips, matt schaub, or kubiak, im fine with cleaning house. he could revert back to a couple years ago and throw for 5k, but i doubt it. if you can't make it work with the weapons in houston, oakland probably isn't gonna work out for you

Shob was much better in the years prior to his trade than Carson Palmer, who steadily declined for like 3 years before the Raiders went Raider. For Shob, though, I think foot surgery is a big deal. And I think it helped ruin him. You plant and drive off of your feet to a big extend when throwing. I think a similar injury would possibly mark the effective end of a baseball pitcher's career.

I'd say weapon, singular. They are arguably worse than the Lions when it comes to finding a legit #2 WR. We'll see how Hopkins turns out. AJ is getting old and Foster continues to take RB hits.

Foster also is a terrible receiver. Owen Daniels is nice, but he's nothing incredible. And since he's gone, who is replacing him. Garrett Graham?

Re: NFL Offseason Thread
All bonus money in a trade immediately hits the previous team's cap, in this case, the Texans. So Shob will take up only his base salaries from Oakland's enormous cap space and he can be cut at any time with no cap penalty.

In my experience, Mark Cuban is right. My desire to watch NFL has gone down considerably, and it has nothing to do with how bad my team has been recently.

Re: NFL Offseason Thread
He's good. But I'm not with those who say he's better than Lamonica and Stabler. The first Super Bowl was largely due to Heyward-Bey's 3 touchdowns, and only one was on a long pass. Russell was better in the second one, but the defense was dominating. It helps to have two all-pro defensive backs. It will be interesting to see what Russell can do throwing to Usain Bolt this season. He almost broke 6,000 yards passing last year -- with the addition of Bolt he's got a real shot to do it this season. Al Davis must be looking up with great pride. The Sybian wrote:Finally!
