That's not the lax bro mentality I encountered back in the day.

Would love to know more of the backstory here. Good fucking job to those players!!

Here's the shorthand (and probably incomplete):

Scanlan, team's leader in goals scored, got suspended indefinitely in late April, missing one game. The coach alone decided he was lifting the suspension, to which the team responded by threatening to walk out of practice. Coach and players hashed things out with mutual respect in both directions. Scanlan practiced by himself under the supervision of a member of the coaching staff.

The scuttlebutt is that Scanlan had transferred to SU from Loyola after getting into a domestic situation with his then-girlfriend, his current girlfriend plays lacrosse at SU, and the words "broken ribs" came up.

The coach had his normal mid-week press conference prior to the Notre Dame game last week, which went very poorly because he can't say anything due to privacy laws and no one wants to actually talk about the upcoming game with this mess going on.

Pretty crazy games last weekend. Three of the four went to sudden death.

In the fourth game, UVA smoked Georgetown 14-3. Last week, Georgetown smoked Syracuse 18-8. And earlier this year, Syracuse beat UVA twice including one by a 20-10 score. It's a weird season.

The final four is now like and old school ACC tournament - UVA vs UNC and Duke vs Maryland. It was very nearly Notre Dame instead of Maryland, which would have meant all four teams from the (current) ACC.

A bit easier to listen to on the radio then ice hockey. But if you get a very good person calling the game they can do a nice job. JHU used to have a great pair do radio coverage (Larry Quinn, star goalie for JHU when I was growing up was one of the people who called games).

Seattle has a pretty good lacrosse scene. Drew Snider is a Seattle produce who starred at Maryland, then the pros, and team USA. He coaches O'dea. Bellevue has a very good team and Mercer Island is good. Bainbridge used to be pretty good. The club teams that comes east for recruiting events (Seattle Starz) and Team Washington can play with some of the better hotbed club teams.

As for the final. Fantastic game. Very entertaining. The D3 final was also amazing. Double OT with RIT Scoring with no time on the shot clock. Find the highlight of the goal, pretty impressive.

I was away at the beach with a big group for the final four... 90 percent of us were lax fans, including my best buddy and his wife (my wife's best friend) who has a nephew that plays on the Man Down unit for the Hoos. Very strange rooting for MD*, but then kind of rooting for UVa when they were killing a penalty.

* MD has always been my second team, but it's gotten a lot harder now that they are in the same league as Hop AND now that MI has a gradually getting better squad, as well.

Lawsuit filed against Syracuse University, their AD, and John Desko in Chase Scanlan case.

Just awful shit, pretty much by all parties except the victim.

Before the alleged assault, Scanlan had struck a men’s lacrosse teammate in the head with a helmet and punched a freshman member of the team without action from SU, the lawsuit alleges. Scanlan was eventually suspended from the team after punching two other players.

On April 17, Scanlan shattered the plaintiff’s phone, smashed the wall in her apartment and assaulted her, the lawsuit alleges. Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety issued an emergency no-contact order on April 18 when the department allegedly became aware of the incident. Officers who initially responded to the assault subjected the plaintiff to “hostile and problematic questioning” in front of Scanlan and then left the plaintiff alone with no supervision, the lawsuit claims.

“The Scanlan assault was the avoidable conclusion of a chain of sexual harassment and domestic violence that included animal abuse, stalking, reproductive coercion and property damage,” the lawsuit reads.

The plaintiff met with an SU Title IX coordinator and her assigned case manager to discuss her options under SU’s Title IX procedures, the suit states. In the meeting, the plaintiff informed officials about alleged claims that two female SU students had also been sexually assaulted by Scanlan in addition to outlining the alleged incidents that she said occurred to her on April 17 and early April 18.

On April 19, head coach Desko suspended Scanlan from the team. Six days later on April 25, SU’s Senior Associate Director of Athletics informed the men’s lacrosse team that Scanlan would be reinstated and allowed to rejoin the team for practice. Later that day, the team held an anonymous vote to gather opinions on kicking Scanlan off the team, the suit states. The vote was 57-1, in favor of kicking Scanlan off the team.

The plaintiff said she was uncomfortable with the prospect of being on the same video call as Scanlan and told the officer she would not move forward with a formal Title IX complaint due to the requirement that she would have to confront Scanlan during the process. She stated that she would fully cooperate with SU’s Title IX complaint against Scanlan and confirm information she previously reported to the university, the suit said.

On April 29, the plaintiff’s mother emailed Wildhack to express her concern over SU’s handling of recent events. A courtesy copy of the email was sent to Gary Gait, Mary Kelly — the plaintiff’s Title IX Coordinator — Kimberly Keenan Kirkpatrick and Kent Syverud.

In response, a video call was arranged with the plaintiff’s mother and stepfather. At the meeting, Wildhack stated that Desko made the decision to reinstate Scanlan, the lawsuit said. Not the point, but they roster 59 players? Is that normal, or a lot because it's SU lax and guys are willing to languish at the bottom there just to get a shot?

Rosters are up across all lacrosse teams (and lots of sports) because of the bonus COVID year. The NCAA (which dictates rosters limits during the playoffs) had lacrosse at a traveling party of 52 (with not all kids getting jerseys for the game). Before last year most teams traveled the whole roster for regular season games (unless flights were involved). That was not the case. Denver had 66 on the roster last year.

Scholarship money is low. D1 lacrosse offers 12.6 for the team (now we know there are other funds) but most kids are paying the way. So in many cases athletics are a money maker on tuition for the schools.

And yes lots of kids will go and hang on to the bench, transfer (which was not a thing 5 or 6 years ago), or just play for a year or two before giving it up. My year at W&L started with 16 freshman. We graduated 8 or 9 4-year seniors. We had between 42-48 on our roster my years

Gait lacrosse was founded by Paul and Gary Gait. I think Gary is no longer with the company...but Paul is. Gary is head coach of the cause.

Also three Spallina's will be with the cuse as they just signed another one.

I ref'd Joey a few times over the summer. He is very good.

Gary shouldn't need any outside income. He had been making north of $700K as the women's lacrosse team for several years.

I just thought it was interesting that there is such a direct line in this case of NIL.

But the interview with the chairwoman said they don't take into account when you win/lose (which rankings do). So Feb results same as May. Notre Dame was very hot at the end of the year but started slow.

Duke's were bad losses, Jacksonville, Loyola, and Syracuse (yes Cuse = a very bad lose this year), and 2 to Notre Dame. Duke's wins were against mid conference AQ teams (some ranked at the time), UVA and UNC
Notre Dame's head to head lose to Ohio State was probably the dagger as they did not actually beat a tournament team (beat Cuse 2x, Duke, UNC, Marquette, Detroit Mercy, Michigan)
Harvard beats Brown, Princeton, and BU (and BU is a AQ like Duke's win)
Ohio state beats Harvard, Notre Dame

The weird thing is UNC, Cuse, and JHU don't sniff the tournament in the same year...and beating them was not helpful this year.

When the plaintiff returned to campus on May 2, no one from SU made any form of outreach, safety checks or “in any way made safety related resources available to the plaintiff” on the day of her return or thereafter, despite Wildhack and Nugnet’s reassurance, the lawsuit alleges.

“At no time following the Scanlan Assault, including upon Plaintiff’s return to SU, did Plaintiff observe SU DPS perform a safety check on Plaintiff’s status,” the lawsuit claimed. According to the suit, the only support the plaintiff received were text messages from teammates and an assistant coach.

Also UVA has had a very good early recruiting.
They got the #1 player for 2023 and the #1 2024 player just switched from Duke to UVA (McCabe Million is son of a college/pro/national team//HoF superstar).

UVA and Maryland are going to be the two monsters for the next several years. What is crazy to me is how far JHU has fallen. None of the top players are even listing JHU as in contention.

Yeah, I don't know what their process is, but if there's a vote involved, he gets every last one. Absolutely one of the best coaches in the history of the sport.

Going out and turning Denver into a perennial powerhouse is incredible.

I used to REALLY dislike field hockey. The game was so disjointed - incredible amount of whistles/stoppages and there was very little flow to it.

They've made a number of rule changes, particularly that a whistle/foul doesn't have to be a stoppage in play for more than the few seconds it takes to gather the ball and go. Kind of hard to explain as I'm typing. Kind of like in soccer, you don't have to wait for the ref to restart play, unless you want to make the ref walk off the 10 yards.

In FH, they used to stop and walk off the yardage on every whistle. And there are a LOT of stoppages in FH. Changed the viewing experience instantly.
